Chapter Director’s Message "Twas a calm and peaceful evening in a camp called "Buckskin Joe" And the whis-key it was flowing with a soothing gur-gling flow "Wait",what am I Saying? This is a motorcycle chapter and we don't say things like that. Yes, we don't smoke and we don't chew and we don't go with girls that do. Our chapter won the Bible. Weelll, dragging myself back to reality.

It's been a good month, we are slowly getting Rodeo Roundup stuff for our Bid to win the Table center piece prize at the District Rally. ( What a mouth full) And, we had some good rides such as the "Rally In the Valley" which I got to go on. Looks like we have decided to have another "Garage Sale" as our fund raiser this year so even though we have pretty much cleaned our selves out for the past 2 years, lets look at relatives and neighbors For possible goodies to sell. I have already stolen my next door neighbors TV set. Well shucks, guess I'm out here, so til next time, Uncle Jim Boob the Magnificent or, xxxxxxxxxxx

Ride Update We had a good time at the Police Competition in Pacific Grove today. Two bikes, 1 van, 7 people. The day started out sunny and warm, then got cloudy and cool. Pacific Grove was more crowded than we anticipated, but it was quite a

celebration. We arrived in time to watch the parade, then walked down to the vendor area for a bite to eat. Then back to the competition arena where we watched 8 teams complete two practice runs and two competi-tion runs on the course. Finally, the Oakland Drill Team performed.

Very nice. Film at 11. 4

From our Rider Educator WILD HOGS RAISES THE CURTAIN ON OLDER BIKER SAFETY ISSUE Art Reflects Reality as Aging Boomers Return to Motorcycles — and Crash ST. PAUL — Public safety officials say the new film, “Wild Hogs,” accurately reflects the dramatic increase in the popularity of motorcy-cling among older men. But the experts warn that the silver-screen treatment overlooks rider training and the true life-and-death crash statistics of older motorcyclists being played out on roads across Minnesota and the nation. The film, which opened recently as a box-office leader, features Tim Allen, John Travolta, Martin Lawrence, and William H. Macy as a “group of middle-aged friends who decide to rev up their routine suburban lives with a freewheeling motorcycle group.” “The filmmakers have it right—boomers are returning to riding big-time,” says Kathy Swanson, director of the Minnesota Office of Traf-fic Safety (OTS). “Older riders are getting into motorcycling again, or for the first time, without changing their driving attitudes or seek-ing safety training — and that’s resulting in increased deaths.” According to OTS, motorcyclist deaths—especially among older rid-ers—continue to rise as overall traffic fatalities decrease. In 2006, motorcycles represented about 3 percent of registered vehicles in Minnesota, yet motorcyclists accounted for 12 percent of the total 486 traffic deaths. And nearly 60 percent of those motorcycle fatali-ties were riders age 35-54. Swanson adds that in addition to wearing protective gear such a hel-met, jacket, boots, and gloves, the most important step a new or re-turning biker can do is take training courses. Recently, U.S. Department of Transportation Secretary Mary Peters called for more training among riders and cited that the crash rate among motorcyclists in the 50-plus age group has increased by more than 400 percent in the last decade. Nationally, motorcycle fatalities have more than doubled in the last 10 years and now account for more than 4,500 deaths and 78,000 injuries annually. ### The above was taken from the Minnesota Motorcycle Safety Center web site.

From our District Directors, We started looking at our calendar and real-ized that almost every weekend through July has a ride or event for GWRRA. The good news is that means we’ll be on the road and seeing each of you soon, and that is why we do this. But as I thought about this, I started thinking about the longer rides that we will be

taking soon and I started watching the “rhythms of the road”. What exactly does that mean? Once I understood this, it makes riding in groups a lot more fun, so let me explain. This past weekend when we went to the Rendezvous with Q, we had the opportunity to ride with another Chapter. We blended into the group quite well and since we were with folks who were Road Cap-tains and had taken Group Riding through GWRRA, there were simi-larities right off that made us comfortable within the group. But, on a short ride, the true “rhythm of the road” is not felt as much, but it is there. As a note, Chapter Q put on a fantastic ride through Orange County ending at a beautiful park and if there was a “reward” for best food, they would take it hands down with ribs, chicken, standing pork roast and a tri-tip carved to your liking, WHAT A SPREAD!!!!! Fan-tastic job Chapter Q! As we get ready to go to Region Rally and Wing Ding, we need to un-derstand what we like on the road. You see, you can really like or love your friends but if you are not compatible with their riding style and you don’t figure that out, you’ll have a miserable trip. So what does it mean, “rhythm of the road”? Well the rhythm starts with communica-tion. Within your group, what do you expect from the participants? When you stop for gas, do you gas and go or do you gas and rest, snack and relax. This is a huge issue in the dynamics of the ride. So next time when you’re getting ready for a trip short or long, think about who you will be riding with, have you ridden with them before, do they ride like you, stop like you? Then talk about the ride, when are the planned stops, where’s lunch and how long will we be there and of course, is there shopping! .

I thought “rhythms of the road” only dealt with riding styles and could the group ride successfully together and although that is a major component, these other issues are equally as important. Such as, do you chat on the CB? You know, pointing out the sites, talking about the day, verbally sharing the experience of the ride with your fellow riders. The other as-pect is certainly riding style. Are you a blaster or do you like to take in the scenery? So if you’re planning a long trip with someone, start talking with them now. Set ground rules that you can all agree on, communicate your needs, including medical needs and eating schedules, and then start planning. Do you have different bikes in your group with smaller gas tanks or do you have a smaller tank and need to stop? Do you get up early or are you a night owl? Do you like to saddle up and ride 100 miles before breakfast, or do you want to eat and then ride? Did you bring breakfast stuff to eat in your room and we’ll have a community breakfast? Communicate, com-municate, communicate and then program those GPS’s, or grab a map and go out and enjoy that touring bike, the best touring bike in the world and have a great and safe trip! So when you see the seminar, “Rhythms of the Road” offered at Region, Wing Ding or the District Rally, take the time to check it out and hear the experiences of these riders. Share your experiences and let’s learn from each other for safe and fun trips on our GoldWings! We’ve started our planning and are meeting and communicating with our traveling companions, so get with your travel mates and let’s go riding! Until we see each other on the road…All aboard!
