FROM YOUR CHAPTER DIRECTOR

Oh, the weather is becoming quite frightful! As it gets colder outside we all think about staying warm and snuggly! Some people do not have that luxury and along with that there are some children that do not have much at all. Thinking about that, PA Chapter ‘K’ is going to sponsor a family this year for the Salvation Army instead of just purchasing toys and donating them to the Salvation Army. This will give us a chance to help a family in need of food and clothing for the family and also provide children to have a nice Christmas! So please think about helping and sponsoring a FAMILY with us! Here is information on ways we can choose to help. Please let us know what you would prefer we do as a Chapter! 1. “Giving Tree” Gift Tags – Our biggest need for toy donations and a great option for groups! This allows you to choose how many "gift tags" (one tag equals one child) you wish to sponsor. The tag lists the child's clothing sizes and toy suggestions. We ask that you purchase a clothing item and one toy for each child. You bring the items to our packing site, unwrapped, so we can pack up boxes for the families. How many tags should you take? As many as you think you can fulfill. If you do not fulfill them all it is ok, we will still provide gifts for those children. 2. Adopt a Family – We give you the entire family (you specify family size). We ask that you purchase a hat and gloves, outfit, and at least one toy for each child. You would also provide the food or a gift card for the family's holiday meal. Gifts for the adults in the home are optional. Then you have the option of contacting the family yourselves and delivering the items. Also, please respond to the email in regards to the distribution and packing for the Salvation Army! Be on the LOOK-OUT, PA Chapter ‘K’ is going to have one more campout! Check your email as we sent one out about Artillery Ridge with information! Please plan on joining us and having one last GLAMOUROUS time with your friends before winter sets in! The dates are November 10th through the 12th or 13th (some are leaving on Monday). We would like to send out “A BIG THANK YOU” to everyone who showed up at HOBBS for the recruitment for PA Chapter ‘K’ on Saturday September 30th. Thank you all for your support and help!

1 more - Rich and will be staying on one more year as Chapter ’s! We

, please let us know if there is anything we can do to make things better for the Chapter!!! We are hoping to make it a GREAT NEW YEAR!!

We for all of your !!!!

FROM YOUR CHAPTER ASSISTANT DIRECTOR

The 2017 riding season is coming to a close, as is the 2017 Chapter ‘K’ Mileage Program. I have received all but a few

of the members ending mileage, so please get it into me if you haven’t done so.

We are going to try something different for the 2018 riding season. There will be two activity planning meetings this year.

The first one will be in December and will cover only the first six months of the season. Then there will be another one in

spring to cover the last six months. The main reason for this is to eliminate the notorious letters of “TBD”!!!!!!!! Which, in

most cases, the event usually gets cancelled due to conflicting schedules. (I know that I was very guilty of that this year.)

So please come to these meetings armed with things you would like to do and places you would like to go. Let’s fill the

calendar with fun things and all of the logistics required to execute it.

After the last Gathering, Jeff led a great ride. This was the first ride I was able to participate in all summer. A lot of the

route took us down and around Shippensburg. Judy and I lived there for nine years and I did not know there were SO

MANY neat roads so close to my front door. I guess that happens when you don’t get out and just ride and stop letting life

get in the way.

Safe travels,

Gary & Judy, ACD

Recruitment Day at Hobbs Cycle. On September 30th, 8 Chapter ‘K’ members participated in a recruitment stand day at Hobbs Cycle. It was windy and a little cold, but Rick’s hot dogs kept us warm. We did talk with a few folks that were at Hobbs, and did have an enjoyable couple of hours. Thanks to Rick & Vicki, George, Jeff, John C., Larry and Grace for attending.

Thanks again for helping out. Rich and Wendy Wirt

FROM YOUR CHAPTER EDUCATOR

Greetings Chapter K,

Here it is September already. According to the calendar, it is still summer until the 21st or 22nd. What great weather to

be riding, not too hot and not too cold.

I think I would be safe in saying that 95% of us leave our rain gear in our wings. How many of you keep a sweatshirt or

light jacket in the wing? What starts out as a great day, can end up quite cold. Just because it is in the 70’s when you leave

home, doesn’t mean it will still be in the 70’s when you get home. Don’t look out at the blue skies and sunshine, jump on

the wing and go. Take the time to look at what the weather is supposed to be in the evening. Take sweatshirts, jackets or

heated gear according to your comfort level.

I think all of us have been riding long enough to say “been there, done that”. Myself included. Two times I remember in

particular with both of them ending up with a hot shower when I got home. Fortunately, neither ended up with being sick.

Take care, ride aware,

Denny

P.S. Sorry that we were not at the September gathering. Since submitting my last newsletter article, we received an

invitation for Kitty’s brother’s 50th anniversary doings. Since he is her “twin” brother, you can figure out where we will be that

day. In Kitty’s case, twin means that they were born at the same time. As far as being alike???....

Raffle Tickets: Kitty Schardt has graciously agreed to help us with our District Raffle Ticket sales. If we sell 200+ tickets,

we will get $1.75 per ticket back to the Chapter. This raffle is for the Lottery BIG 4, and the deadline to purchase tickets is

January 15, 2018. Kitty has the tickets now and they will be available at the gatherings.

CONGRATULATIONS TO CHUCK AND BRENDA LEWIS ON ATTAINING THEIR LEVEL 4 PATCHES AND

CERTIFICATES!!!

FROM YOUR DISTRICT C.O.Y.

Chapter ‘Q’ Campout: John C., Wilda, John L, and Glenda started out about 8:30 a.m. on Thursday, August 31st for

Pittsfield for the Labor Day Weekend. It was cool when we left but no rain, so I decided to ride my own bike. It was great

being back on my own bike again. As you probably guessed, Wilda and I were dressed for “snow”. Freeze-out, heavy

coats, sweatshirts, snow pants, etc., but we were still cold!! No rain until we got to Clarion, but it wasn’t too bad. Just a light

rain which didn’t last long. But no matter………….my bike got dirty! We stopped in Phillipsburg for gas at Sheetz and a

break. Back on the bike and off again. We got behind a wide load going up the mountain and we were not as lucky this

time with the rain. We could not get around the wide load safely and then the rain came. Light at first and then heavier.

Thank goodness the heavy rain did not last long and back to light rain for a short distance. END OF RAIN for the day.

HURRAY! We got to Pittsfield around 3 or so and were greeted by members of Chapter Q. Mike, Chapter Director of

Chapter ‘Q’, watched us set up and said “no way am I camping with a camper behind my bike. It takes too long to set up”.

Mike has a camper on the back of his pickup bed. Really Mike, it doesn’t take us long to set up, it’s the extras that we do.

Like putting tarps over the camper, tarps under the camper, poles to hold the tarps up, clothes line, and a few other things

for the comfort of home. Next on the agenda was supper with Chapter ‘Q’ members at Gigi’s in Cory.

After breakfast on Friday morning, which by the way was cooked to order by Chef John L., we made our way to Sprague’s

Maple Farms near Portville, NY. It was a very nice ride but very cool. Wilda and I were dressed warm but still cold. I bet

the next time I put my “electrics” on the list so I don’t forget them!!!! I thought we were going to take a tour of the maple farm

but we had lunch instead. Check out those pictures of elk horns for lights and the animals sitting at one of the tables having

lunch. The ride back to the campground was a little warmer. When we arrived back to the campground, our friends Mary

and Greg from Chapter ‘D’ were there set up and ready to renew our friendship as well as John, Jr. John, Jr. met some of

the others outside of Warren and went to the Kinzua Dam and Visitor’s Center before returning to Brokenstraw. Tonight’s

supper was corn soup (which I put in the slow cooker before we left in the morning) and bar-b-q sandwiches. Nice warm

soup and warm sandwiches for a cool day…..yeah!

Saturday after breakfast of eggs, sausage, bacon, pancakes and coffee, we went to Wal-Mart to spend money. I forgot

exactly what we went for but a good purchase was another pair of warm gloves and ear muffs. Oh, it’s so nice so let’s drop

off the milk and other perishable items and ride. Well that was short lived. By the time we got back to the campground it

was raining. After the rain stopped several of us went for a ride. After a supper of coleslaw, ribs, and more soup, we sat

around the campfire and played games. Marla from Chapter ‘Q’ always comes up with great games to play. Then the rain

started again and it rained all night and most of Sunday morning. Now we are debating what to do about doing the chicken

if the rain continues into the afternoon. Always have a plan B. But the rain stopped and onto getting things ready for the

chicken bar-b-q. The chicken started, pavilion cleaned, tables set, and all the other necessary stuff done, members from

other chapters began to arrive. Out comes the food and desserts along with the chicken. Yum, Yum. And of course, it

would not be complete without the auction after the meal.

Another ride and it’s time for another campfire. The day turned out to be perfect riding weather.

Monday after breakfast of eggs, bacon, sausage, and french toast, it’s time to pack up and begin our journey home. No rain

in sight, beautiful riding weather, not too cold and not too hot.

Come join us next year, same time, and same location.

Glenda

Below are some pictures from the Chapter ‘Q’ Campout in Marienville, PA, Aug 31st through Sep 3rd. We had a great time.

FROM YOUR CHAPTER C.O.Y.

The riding season is winding down. The beginning of the month we were at Chapter Q for their campout. It was a little cold

out there and the weather did not cooperate, so we did not get a lot of riding in. We had a great time just sitting around and

talking…sometimes we need that. Lucky for us the weather was good on our ride home.

On September 6th, John headed to Leo’s in Carlisle for some ice cream.

On Saturday, September 9th, we headed over to Rick and Vicki’s for some seminars in the a.m. Had a great lunch, played

some games, and just sat around and talked with everyone. Then more food. Everything was delicious and we had a great

time. A big thank you to Rick and Vicki Larson for opening their home for all of us.

We had a staff meeting on the 20th, the Gathering on the 24th, and John attended the recruiting day at Hobbs on the 30th.

On October 1st, we attended the “40 to Phoenix” meeting that Tom White had. John Sr. and John Jr. are seriously thinking

of going. Not sure if John Jr’s fiancée is going to let him go. I told John Sr. I was good if he wanted to go, he just had to

promise me that we would make the trip again when we both can go. Oh yeah, and no women in his hotel room.

Upcoming:

On October 12th we have an Ice Cream meet.

On October 14th, John C. and John L. are going to be taking the Fall Foliage ride. I think they are still working on some of

the details. I asked enough questions to find out that we are meeting at 9 a.m. at the Kohl’s/Red Robin parking lot in

Carlisle. We will then head to the Sheetz in Halifax. You can meet us at either place. After our ride, we are invited back to

Chuck and Brenda’s house for some turkey chili. Hope to see you on the ride.

On the 21st, we will be heading over to Rick and Vicki’s for the Chapter Dice Run. Sign in at 11 a.m.

We have the Gathering on the 22nd.

Make sure you mark your calendar for December 2nd for our “Holiday Get Together”.

The riding season is coming to an end, the leaves, walnuts, and etc., are falling from the trees. BE SAFE OUT THERE!!

Three Wheel Basic Riding Course (3WBRC). John Leib and John Crosson attended the 3WBRC on October 2nd and 3rd.

Glenda believes that John C. got a perfect score. Congratulations to both of you!.

Another little funny from Glenda: On the first day after his divorce, he sadly packed his belongings into boxes, crates and

suitcases. On the second day, he had the movers come and collect his things. On the third day, he sat down for the last

time at their beautiful dining room table, by candle-light. He put on some soft background music and feasted on a pound of

shrimp, a jar of caviar, a bottle of spring-water, and 3 cans of sardines. When he’d finished, he went into each and every

room and deposited a few half-eaten shrimp dipped in caviar, and some sardines into the hollow center of the curtain rods.

He then cleaned up the kitchen and left. On the fourth day, the wife came back with her new boyfriend, and at first all was

bliss. Then, slowly, the house began to smell. They tried everything; cleaning, mopping, and airing out the place. Vents

were checked for dead rodents, and carpets were steam cleaned. Air fresheners were hung everywhere. Exterminators

were brought in to set off gas canisters, during which time the two had to move out for a few days, and in the end they even

paid to replace the expensive wool carpeting. Nothing worked!! People stopped coming over to visit. Repairmen refused to

work in the house. The maid quit. Finally, they couldn’t take the stench any longer, and decided they had to move. But a

month later, even though they’d cut their price in half, they couldn’t find a buyer for such a stinky house. Word got out, and

eventually even the local realtors refused to return their calls. Finally, unable to wait any longer for a purchaser, they had to

borrow a huge sum of money from the bank to purchase a new place. Then the ex called the woman and asked how things

were going. She told him the saga of the rotting house. He listened politely and said that he missed his old home terribly

and would be willing to reduce his divorce settlement in exchange for having the house. Knowing he could have no idea

how bad the smell really was, she agreed on a price that was only 1/10th of what the house had been worth…but only if he

would sign the papers that very day. He agreed, and within two hours her lawyers delivered the completed paperwork. A

week later, the woman and her boyfriend stood smiling as they watched the moving company pack everything to take to

their new home and, to spite the ex-husband, they even took the curtain rods! I love a happy ending, don’t you?

PLANNING MEETING HAPPENINGS CALENDAR (for 2017)

The planning calendar for the year was included in the January, February, and March newsletters, which are posted on our

website. Since April, we are only posting events for 3 months out. OMG we are getting close to the end of the year

already. Where does the time go?

Rick and Vicki Larson

OCTOBER:

10/7/17 – Mount Holly Methodist Church Turkey Dinner, 4 p.m. Meet at the Sheetz in Mount Holly at 3:30 p.m.

10/12/17 – Ice Cream Ride. Meet at the Sheetz in Dillsburg at 5 p.m.

10/14/17 – Fall Foliage Ride led by John Crosson and John Leib. Meet at the Red Robin in the Target/Kohls Shopping

Center, Route 74/Westminster Drive, Carlisle, PA at 9 a.m. The group will then head to the Sheetz in Halifax

to pick up anyone who wants to meet there.

10/21/17 – Dice Run at the Larson’s for Chapter ‘K’ members only. RSVP Rick or Vicki by October 15th if you plan to

attend.

10/22/17 – Chapter ‘K’ Gathering

NOVEMBER:

11/12/17 – Chapter ‘K’ Planning Meeting (for 2018 events). Dillsburg VFW. We will only work on 6 months of the 2018

calendar (January to June) and we will have a second planning meeting in May 2018 for the remainder of the year. We are

hoping this will allow us to come up with a better calendar and have some firm dates. It also allows our Florida winter

members to help plan some events for July through December 2018.

DECEMBER:

12/2/17 – Chapter ‘K’ Holiday Party, 1-4 p.m., Dillsburg VFW, Dillsburg, PA.

Koziar’s Christmas Village. As many of you may have seen in your emails, we are canvassing Chapter ‘K’ members to

ask if they would be interested in going to Koziar’s, and which of the 2 proposed dates would work better for each of you.

Koziar’s is a holiday lights village, and is a WALKING tour on paved and lit pathways. It takes about 1 ½ hours to walk

through. The Chapter is considering paying the admission for Chapter ‘K’ members, provided we get at least 20 members

definitely interested in participating. Food can be purchased there, such as hot dogs, hamburgers, pizza, nachos, hot

chocolate, cookies, etc. Food purchases are on your own. Costs for individuals who are not members of Chapter ‘K’ are:

Children up to 3 years of age, FREE

Children ages 4 to 10, $9.00

Ages 11 and up, $10.00

If we get enough participation, we would set a meeting place and ask members to carpool to Koziar’s. It is located about 10

miles south of I-78, exit 19, Strausstown. We would plan to be at Koziar’s by 5 p.m. (the hours on Sundays are 5-9 p.m.),

so that we could depart by 7 or 7:30, in order to get back home at a reasonable hour. The dates we are proposing are

either December 3rd or December 10th. Please email either Vicki/Rick or Rich/Wendy no later than October 7th, to let us

know (1) if you are interested, and (2) either the 3rd or the 10th as your preferred date. Emails are either [email protected] or

[email protected]. Thanks.

EDITOR’S CONTRIBUTION:

Chapter ‘K’ Picnic, September 9th. The picnic was held at our house and for once, we are all beyond shocked, the

weather cooperated. We had 25 Chapter ‘K’ members attend. GREAT TURNOUT! We started the day bright and early at

9 a.m. for the important stuff…coffee and donuts. Then it was time for some education. Rich and Wendy taught us how to

camp GW style, manage change, tent camping vs. RV camping, how to listen and communicate, the history of GWRRA,

and night riding. After our training, we took a lunch break with some good ol’ hot dogs and Wendy’s famous (no, not that

Wendy, our Wendy) Beef Bar B Que. Then it was time for some serious fun and games. Corn Hole and Bingo. We were

real inventive with prizes…50/50 tickets, how easy was that. Both games went over really well and I think everyone enjoyed

themselves. Well maybe except Wendy. She was banned from playing Bingo with Chapter ‘B’, and after today, she is

banned from playing Bingo in the entire state of Florida. Per Sandy Martin. Sandy said too many women would get mad at

Wendy’s continual winning ways. So that’s that Wendy. Keep your dobbers out of FL. Wilda and I won our game of corn

hole but only because Wilda managed to get all the points. Whew, games over, just in time to EAT AGAIN! Dinner is

served complete with Pulled Pork, Ham, Macaroni Salad, Potato Salad, Veggie Tray, and Fresh Fruit. Then DESSERTS

and thank you everyone…we asked that they bring a regular sized dessert to share as well as something they liked as any

leftovers were going back home with them. And everyone complied. It was great and the desserts were really good. All in

all, it was a great day, and thanks to everyone who came and enjoyed the day with us. Great food, great friends…what

more to life is there? OK, maybe a great bike. Below are some pictures, compliments of Glenda and Rick. Thanks!

PA CHAPTER ‘K’ CARD-CARRYING MEMBERS ONLY DICE RUN: The Dice Run will be on October 21, 2018. Sign in is

between 11 a.m. and 1 p.m. It will start and end at our home, Rick and Vicki Larson, 9421 Carlisle Road, Dillsburg, PA.

SPECIAL DIRECTIONS, PLEASE NOTE!!!! The Dillsburg Farmers Fair is held in the town of Dillsburg on the same

weekend as our Dice Run. The Dice Run actual ride itself will not go into or near Dillsburg but getting to our house will be

different. See below:

Instead of turning off Route 15 onto Route 74 South and going through the town of Dillsburg, please turn at Golf

Course Road. If you are southbound, continue straight at the traffic light where you would normally turn left

(where the Sheetz, PNC Bank and Wendy’s is located). Get into the left lane and go straight through the next traffic

light (Mountain Road). Once you pass the golf driving range on the right and Tom’s on the left, get into the left turn

lane to turn left on Golf Course Road. Follow Golf Course Road to the stop sign (about a mile). Turn right onto

Route 74 South, go past the Northern York school complex, and turn left to continue on Route 74 South. Go 2.6

miles to our home, #9421 Carlisle Road on left side. Our house number is on the mailbox.

The Dice Run is about 40 miles and you will roll your dice when you get back to our house. Food and beverages will be

served after the ride. Please let us know if you will be participating. RSVP by October 15th to Rick/Vicki, (717) 432-8894

or email at [email protected]. Thanks!

Thanks Jeff and Sandy Martin for leading a ride after the September meeting. We rode to King’s Gap and stopped at a

little store for some ice cream and learning that John Leib’s relatives used to own that store. It was a great day for a ride.

LEBANON VALLEY YAMAHA DEMO DAY: Vicki and I attended theYamaha Demo Day on September 23, 2018. They

had a big crowd with lots of folks wanting to take a ride on the 4-wheelers and side-by-sides they had to test drive. Vicki

wanted to ride a side-by-side, but they had a pretty big hill to go over and she wasn’t sure about that. It did look like a nice

trail, and it was long enough to give you an idea of its power and abilities. We heard lots of great comments, especially

about the side-by-sides. Most people we saw wanted to test ride them. Of course, Dick and his staff were there to meet

and greet everyone, and a couple of his riding friends helped to serve hot dogs and drinks. The weather cooperated to give

them a really nice day for this event. We look forward to attending some more of their events in the future. We’ll watch their

calendar and set up a ride and possibly another recruitment day event.

GLENDA & VICKI’S FUNNY CORNER

The trouble with email…It’s wise to remember how easily email can be misused, sometimes unintentionally, with

serious consequences. Consider the case of the Illinois man who left the snow-filled streets of Chicago for a vacation in

Florida. His wife was on a business trip and was planning to meet him there the next day. When he reached his hotel,

he decided to send his wife a quick email. Unfortunately, when typing her address, he missed one letter, and his note

was directed instead to an elderly preacher’s wife whose husband had passed away on the day before. When the

grieving widow check her email, she took one look at the monitor, let out a piercing scream, and fell to the floor in a dead

faint. At the sound, her family rushed into the room and saw this note on the screen: Dearest Wife, Just got checked in.

Everything prepared for your arrival tomorrow. P.S. Sure is hot down here.

Do you know how to tell when a train is eating? It choos. (Compliments of a kids show).

Two small-town merchants were visiting New York City for the first time to attend a conference. There was a large

party thrown, with lots of food and refreshments. At the end of the party, they both went outside. One guy crossed the

street, while the other wandered into a subway entrance. When the first guy reached the opposite side of the street, he

noticed the other emerging from the subway stairs. “Where did you go?” he asked enthusiastically. “I don’t know,”

gushed the other guy, “but you should see the train set that guy has in his basement!”

What is a “free” gift? Aren’t all gifts free?

They told me I was gullible…and I believed them.

The optimist believes the glass is half full. The pessimist believes it is half empty. The mother just wants to know why

you didn’t use a coaster.

Not all math puns are bad. Just sum.

What hair color do they put on the driver’s licenses of bald men?

A little girl asked her father, “Daddy, do all fairy tales begin with “Once upon a time’?” He replied, “No there’s a whole

series of fairy tales that begin with “If elected, I promise…”.

FROM YOUR DISTRICT DIRECTORS

Greetings everyone,

I hope that you have had the opportunity to observe the beautiful colors in the trees lately as the leaves have started their change from summer to fall. I don’t know where the time has gone. 2017 seems to have been going by too fast. Andi and I just returned from the NY/NJ Bi-State Rally in Cortland, NY. The ride there was long but riding through the back roads of PA and NY is just something you shouldn’t miss. The leaves are changing more in NY and they are beautiful. We had a great time at the rally. Approximately 240 GWRRA members came from not only Region B but other districts in different regions. There were also a few members from Canada also. The weather was great for the rides they put together and just being able to meet with GWRRA friends you don’t get to see that often was worth the long ride. The weather was pretty warm while we were in New York and it was almost 90 degrees on our way home. I guess summer finally decided to make a brief visit. The weather forecast is looking like that may be the end of the warmer weather. Please don’t get discouraged about the riding season coming to an end just yet. Fall sometimes produces the best riding time. With the changing of the leaves and the great scenery, Fall can be our best time of the year to ride. Just remember the dangers of falling leaves and wet roads. They can be a deadly combination. Also, hunters will be taking to the woods and the deer activity will start to peak. Please watch out for all the critters running out in front of you. Just a reminder that chapter charter fees will be due to the district by November 1st. We will be sending a memo out to the chapter directors soon. All chapters must pay their charter fees. If you have enough Roll for the Dough points to cover your fee, you will be reimbursed by the district. Safe riding until we see you again,

Rick & Andi Riek
