Afternoon Spotlight: “Transforming Tragedy into Triumph in Clean Business and
Beyond”
Jeff Denholm
Founder, Atira Systems
Jeff wears many hats in life, including entrepreneur, professional athlete, inspirational speaker and environmental
steward. ATIRA Systems is the professional nexus of Jeff's entrepreneurial spirit and passion for the environment.
While seeking a fire retardant for his Wildfire Equipment Company Jeff was struck by disturbing statistics about the
toxicity of current offerings. "What if we could come up with a nontoxic product that is more effective at fighting
fires of all types without doing unnecessary harm?" Jeff discovered that annually there are millions of gallons of
18
flame retardant dumped into natural resources-- further destroying precarious wetlands and large population centers
throughout the world. So began Jeff's drive in creating a business that not only saves lives and structures, but does
no harm to earth.
Starting at a young age, Jeff pursued a diverse professional background — taking him out of the typical business
environment — into the iconoclastic and adventurous world of a professional Mariner and commercial diver. The
seasonal contract work of the Maritimes enabled him to pursue and excel at a variety of outdoor sports, which
strengthened his connection to the environment. Further quenching his thrust for adventure, Jeff landed a position as
Team Diver and Logistics Coordinator for The Whydah Expedition Society. It was a life-changing injury, sustained
in his work as a mariner that redirected the course of Jeff's life forever. His personal mission focused on what he
would give back to the world. Rebuilding from his injury delivers a daily sense of gratitude for family, friends and
the experiences that so positively shape Jeff's life. It further motivated Jeff to taking the first career step in
'sustainable business' as project manager and brand development for The Flatbread Company. Parallel to his career,
Jeff remained dedicated to adventure-sports, despite the effects of his injury, and is currently well rewarded as an
athletic ambassador for the Patagonia Company. To Jeff, this honorable nomination serves as an inspirational
springboard in creating a sustainable and socially responsible business. Jeff aims to build upon the Patagonia
business model and lead ATIRA Systems into the lucrative, rewarding and untapped landscape of truly non-toxic
fire protection systems. ATIRA Systems represents the culmination of Jeff's diverse vocational experience coupled
with his desire to protect the natural world. Jeff's charismatic 'can do' spirit benefits several audiences worldwide.
He serves as a motivational mentor to those who are surviving traumatic injuries while also contributing tirelessly to
his community including, The Woodruff Foundation Tahoe Paddle, Ghostryders Watermans Club, and the Ride-A-
Wave Foundation.

Table 5. E & A Companies
Company Description: We’re a business people who, since 1977, have enjoyed a track record of working alongside
entrepreneurs to help companies reach their true potential. One of our most recent successes came from helping to
take Udi’s Gluten Free Foods from $6 million in sales to more than $100 million—in just two and a half years.
We’re extremely proud of that accomplishment.
We pride ourselves on knowing how to effectively operate companies. We understand how to accelerate strengths
and bridge gaps in an organization by utilizing a fairly simple, extremely hands-on process. Central to this
process—and a key to our success—is our sense of urgency and our ability to make decisions quickly. We work
daily with the leaders of the company to take the business to the next level by focusing on long-term value creation.
Our philosophy runs counter to the buy-and-flip approach exercised by most firms.
If you’ve built a successful company—and have a strong customer following to go with it—this could be a good
time for us to open a dialogue. Many owners ask about our typical exit timing. The fact is, there is no “typical.” We
continue to add value until we and the owner agree the time is right for a sale. We have no fixed expectations.

Table 9. Unreasonable Institute
Company Description: The Unreasonable Institute gets entrepreneurs what they need to scale solutions to the
world's biggest problems. Each year, they unite two dozen entrepreneurs from every corner of the globe working in
all sectors to live under the same roof for six weeks in Boulder, Colorado. There, these entrepreneurs receive
training from 50 mentors, ranging from a Time Magazine Hero of the Planet, to the head of user experience at
Google X, to an entrepreneur who's enabled over 20 million farmers to move out of poverty. In the process, they
form relationships with hundreds of angels, foundations and investment funds as they seek connections, capital, and
collaboration partners, receive legal advice and design consulting, and present to 850 local supporters.
24
Specific to funders and investors, the Unreasonable Institute realizes the difficulty and uphill battle all parties
(funders and entrepreneurs) face in finding that perfect match. Thus, Unreasonable connects funders with their
entrepreneurs not under the context of "here are some people who can potentially give you money, go pitch to them
and answer their questions" but instead under the context of "together these people can help entrepreneurs find the
right type, amount, and person to provide capital. Let’s work with them."
Unite 25 high-impact entrepreneurs from around the work for 6-weeks
Provide world-class mentorship, access to seed capital, intensive skill training, a global network of support

Table 11. Huntington Capital
Company Description: Huntington Capital seeks to be the best-of-class mezzanine fund serving the lower middle
market in California and the southwestern United States. This is measured first by return to investors and second by
contributions by our portfolio companies to their communities. Huntington was founded in 2000 and is currently
operating two limited partnerships, Huntington Capital, L.P., a federally licensed Small Business Investment
Company (SBIC) and Huntington Capital Fund II, L.P. an institutional limited partnership.
Provides financing to established, small and medium sized companies
Provides growth capital in the range of $2,000,000 to $7,000,000
Provides flexible financing to match your unique situation
25
Our founder, Richard B. Huntington was the co-founder of University Mechanical and Engineering Contractors
with his brother Lee Huntington. They started with one used truck and a box of tools and grew to the largest
mechanical engineering contracting company of its type in the nation with $150 million in revenues. Similarly our
limited partners include many of Southwest USA’s pioneering entrepreneurs who are continuing that heritage by
participating as investors and advisors to Huntington Capital. Huntington Capital provides growth capital to
companies that have been in operation for at least two years, have at least one year of profitable operations and the
potential for continued profitable growth. The most critical factor in our decision is the quality of the management
team. Because of the various ways Huntington Capital can structure a transaction it is not necessary for our clients
to plan on selling the company or focus on a strategy for taking the company public. We can tailor financing
packages for our borrowers that match their company’s unique situation.

Company Description: Renewal Funds invests social venture capital in early growth stage companies in North
America building on the exceptional long term track record of our team. We add value to entrepreneurs through
capital, networks and expertise. Our model is to deliver above market returns for our partners while creating
positive change.
Renewal Funds focuses on early stage growth companies with between $1 and $20 million dollars in annual
revenue. We look for passionate values-aligned entrepreneurs and management teams that we can support
through our capital, networks and expertise. We invest in sectors that are traditionally underserved by venture
capital funds since they do not provide the short term hockey stick growth that successful technology firms have
exhibited in the past. We provide patient capital, looking to be partners with our investee companies for 5 to 7
years, and are comfortable with businesses expanding at double, rather than triple, digit growth rates. After a first
round investment we reserve capital for follow-on investment to support our companies as they grow and need to
build infrastructure fund growth and/or add to their management teams. We work hard to bring valuable resources
to our portfolio companies.
Core sectors for Renewal Funds are organic and natural food, green products and environmental innovation
One of the largest investors in the organic and natural food and green products sectors in North America in
the early-growth stage
95% of all venture capital investment in North America has been directed to tech, clean-tech and bio-tech
businesses, this provides Renewal Funds with excellent access to deals
