The definition of I.T. is the application of computers

and telecommunications equipment to store,

retrieve, transmit and manipulate data, often in the

context of a business or other enterprise. Several

industries are associated with information

technology, including computer hardware,

software, electronics, semiconductors, internet,

telecom equipment, e-commerce and computer services.

On September 16, 2014 there was the first I.T. class. Mr. Silverthorne was installed to teach the

I.T. class. I interviewed Mr. Silverthorne and asked him some questions.

Q. Who are you?

A. I am Mr. Silverthorne and I am from Vancouver, B.C. I taught in Korea, (Jeju island) for a year,

and then I taught a year in B.C. In Qatar I taught for 3 years before I came to CBIS. In Qatar I was

the educational technology coordinator (teaches other teachers).

Q. Why did I.T. class form?

A. I.T. class was formed because CBIS needed some specialized courses and I.T. was it. I.T. was

chosen because it was the most important course to learn.

Q. Why is I.T. needed?

A. It is needed because technology is always changing and we

need to teach the students to make them prepare for tomorrow’s

technology. Also if students don’t learn I.T., they will get behind.

Q. What will I.T. teach us?

A. I.T. will teach you about productivity software (how to publish

documents), digital citizenship, safety in digital, robotics math,

and technology engineering.

So after I had done my research, I felt that I.T. is needed in our

lives. Do you think so to? Why or Why not?

About the Asian Games

Asian games are a multi-sport event held every four years for the

Asian athletes. And there are 2 kinds of Asian games, the Summer

Asian Games, and the Winter Asian Games just same as the Olympics.

Asian games are the second-biggest multi-sport event after

Olympics. And as same as the Olympics, there’s a thing like

Paralympic games, but the name is different, the name is Asian

Para Games.

The game was organized by Asian Games Federation. The 1st Asian game was opened in

New Delhi, India, 1951. At the 1st Asian games, only 11 countries and 489 athletes participated.

South Korea wasn’t at the first Asian game, but Korea started participating since 2nd

Asian games .Korea was selected as the host city for 4 times for summer Asian games, and 1 for

Winter Asian games. North Korea was NEVER selected as the host nation of Asian games. In

Korea, Seoul, Incheon, Busan, Gwangwon Province have been selected as the host city of the

Asian Games.

The 1st game was the 1970 Seoul Asian Games, but because of the security a threat from

North Korea, the other reason was because was of lack of the fund resources, Korea gave up

this game, so this game was held in Bangkok, Thailand. The 2nd game that was scheduled in

South Korea was the 1986 Seoul Asian games, the 3rd was 1999 Kangwon Asian Winter Games,

fourth was 2002 Busan Asian Games, 5th was 2014 Asian Games. The last game was the 17th

Incheon Asian Games, and 45 nations and 9501 Athletes participated.

The 17th Asian Games started on September 19th, and ended on October 4th.And Korea

was ranked as the 2nd on the 2014 Asian game medal table. The 1st was China.

ALS Ice Bucket Challenge By: Aaron

I think most of you reading this know about the ALS Ice Bucket Challenge. It is an activity that involves dumping buckets of ice water on someone’s head to promote awareness of ALS.

ALS is often referred as Lou

Gehrig’s disease, which symptoms refer and describe progressive weakness caused by muscle overusing. This results as in difficulty of speaking, swallowing, and breathing. Who is Lou Gehrig? Some of you might wonder where the name came from. Lou Gehrig was one of the best baseball player in mid-1920’s to late 1930’s. He was in New York Yankees. By overusing his muscles he was the first one to get the disease in the whole world. Gehrig died two years after getting the disease. Before the Ice Bucket Challenge, there was another challenge called “Cold Water Challenge”. You have to donate money to cancer research or jump into cold water. But it was only popular in northern United States. The Ice Bucket Challenge has some rules. If someone is challenged, he/she has 24 hours to either donate $100 or pour ice on their head. When pouring ice on participant’s head, they need to announce their acceptance to the challenge. Then pour the ice on participant’s head. After that, participant can nominate three other people to participate. Some people choose both. On July 30th, 2014 personalities of the Morning Drive on Golf Channel did the Ice Bucket Challenge. After that lots of other TV Shows started doing them too. Many celebrities, musicians, and entrepreneurs started doing the challenge and nominating each other. Celebrities usually do both the challenge and donate money too. But President Barack Obama of United States got challenged by Ethel Kennedy, Justin Bieber, LeBron James, and Weird Al” Yankovic, but declined, and donated $100.

Page 8: CBIS Times Sept-Oct 2014

Some people get creative with this challenge. Paul Bissonnette, who got nominated by Keith Yandle, went to a mountain and got the glacier ice water poured onto his head by a chopper. Bill Gates, who has an IQ of 160 wanted to do the challenge little differently. He made a bucket holder that has a rope. If he pulls the rope the ice falls on his head.

After seeing the celebrities do the challenge, average people like you started doing them too. I didn’t do the challenge, but I donated $100 to the ALS Association Korea. Maybe you can donate some too. Or pour ice on your head.

Step1 Choose a firm pumpkin with at least one side that has a smooth, blemish-free face. It doesn't matter if one side of the pumpkin is nasty looking, just turn that side to the wall.

Step2 With the knife, start near what will be the back side, about 3 inches from the stem and slowly work your way around the top. Before you complete the circle, cut a notch so the lid will fit securely back in the hole

Step3 Rip your pumpkin's lid off! Pull as much out as you can with your hand, then

Step4 Scrape the inside walls

Step5 The scoop from your kit, or an ice cream scoop, or a metal measuring cup

Step6 Cut the loose glop off from the pumpkin lid

Step7 The small plastic poker from the kit, press through the design inside the gray side of each shape. Make holes that are about 1/8 of an inch apart.

Step8 Cut the shape that you design.

Step9 The finished pumpkin won't look too impressive until you put a light or candle in it

CN tower

By Justin Park

In Toronto, Canada proudly presents the tallest tower in the world: the CN tower!

It height is 553 m, has a restaurant that rotates 360 degrees in order to fascinate the guests, and has a walking stair marathon campaign to raise money for charity. You can enjoy the fun while you eat food at the 360 restaurant with some view that revolves around the inside of the CN Tower. You should go to the CN Tower when you travel to Toronto.

It has been also struck by lightning. But, the surprising thing is that it survived. I think it survived because of the lightning pole at the top of the buildings. They support the building. If you go to the top of the CN Tower, I heard that it has the greatest view that shows a different perspective of Canada. You could see the CN Tower at the downtown of Ontario.

In the walking stair marathon campaign, they walked 1336 steps for raising money. As you can see, there is a red line on both sides of the round part of the CN Tower. Those red lines and the white part stand for the Canada’s flag.

We have looked at some interesting, and fantastic facts and introductions about the CN Tower. From slow spinning restaurants, to the walking stairs marathon, we see that the CN Tower is a 5-star- must-see place to step by when you have the chance to take a trip to Canada.

Cambodia

I went Cambodia 2 times with my family.

I saw poor people live in a canoe that they call a small home for them. I felt sorry for them.

I saw many kinds of homes.

My mom and dad saw an Angkorwat.

My favorite experience in Cambodia was to help paint a school wall.

I was happy to help the children in Cambodia. Seeing their big smiles made me happy and proud.

In 2014 October 8th, I went to Cambodia once again!

All about Taylor Swift

By Sarah You

Today I am going to write about my favorite singer,

Taylor Alison Swift. She was born on December 13th

1989 (now 25 years old) in Wyomissing,

Pennsylvania. She is known as a country pop singer

and a singer-songwriter.

I like her cause she plays many kinds of guitars.

She spent her early life on her family’s Christmas tree farm at

Wyomissing, Pennsylvania. Her grandmother had been a professional

opera singer which inspired her to be a singer. She started crafting

songs at the age of 5 and when she was 10, she started singing at local

events and contests. At age 12 she began writing her own songs and learned how to play guitar.

When she was 16 she made her first album.

The most interesting album she made is “RED”. There are famous songs she

made such as, “Red”, “We are never ever getting back together”, and also”22”. Also in

album “1989”, there is a new song called “Shake it off” which is also famous too. The

music video was quite interesting…

Also, the song “You belong with me” was popular because

the lyrics were made for young people. Some of the songs that she

wrote were used in many movies. For example there was one in

“Hunger Games”. I hope she continues to

write great songs :)
