Sacrament of the Anointing of the Sick The Anointing of the Sick is celebrated with all those whose health is seriously impaired by sickness and old age and before surgery whenever a serious illness is the reason for the surgery. In cases of an emergency please call the parish office.

Dear St. James Cathedral Family,
Over and over, for the past three Sundays, in chapter 6 of
the Gospel according to St. John, we are reminded that
Jesus is the Bread of Life. Jesus is not forcing Himself to
us. He is actually extending a loving invitation to all those
who are able to hear His words. With a great sense of urgency,
Jesus wants us to get to know Him. It is not enough to
just receive the bread of the Eucharist. Just like the disciples
at Emmaus, who sat with our resurrected Lord at table, we
must also recognize Him in the breaking of the Bread.
Have you ever heard the saying: “You are what you eat?”
As we prepare to receive Jesus at Holy Communion, we
must remember always that through this gift we become
Jesus. You heard me right! When we eat Jesus, we become
Jesus! How can we grow in this awareness that Jesus is
inviting us to discover about Himself? In today’s reading
from the Book of Proverbs and the Letter to the Ephesians,
we are called to grow in Wisdom. If we lack understanding
we must eat and drink from the divine bread and wine,
which God wants to nourish our minds and hearts with.
We are called no to live in ignorance. We must seek the
will of God in our lives. Jesus, the Bread of Life, empowers us
to imitate Him in our desire to love and serve others. Immersing
ourselves in this Eucharistic mystery we are beautifully
transformed in instruments that provide nourishment to
others. We are called to share the Bread of Life through
our generous and compassionate service towards those
who are suffering and in dire need. We are the bread Jesus
has multiplied and is visibly identified as His Church, the
community of believers. This community is willing to go
out to the world and tell the Good News of salvation,
through our acts of charity and service. Wisdom that
flows from the heart of God allows us to see clearly the
presence of his Son Jesus, who is “The Bread that came
down from Heaven.” Filled with the gift of God’s wisdom,
may we taste and see the goodness of the Lord.

Estimada Familia de la Catedral de Santiago Apóstol,
Una y otra vez, durante los últimos tres domingos, en el
capítulo 6 del Evangelio según San Juan, se nos recuerda
que Jesús es el Pan de la Vida. Jesús no se está forzando a
nosotros. En realidad, está extendiendo una invitación
amorosa a todos aquellos que pueden escuchar Sus palabras.
Con un gran sentido de urgencia, Jesús quiere que lo conozcamos.
No es suficiente recibir el pan de la Eucaristía. Al igual
que los discípulos de Emaús, que estaban sentados con
nuestro Señor resucitado en la mesa, nosotros también
debemos reconocerlo en la fracción del pan. ¿Alguna vez
has escuchado el dicho: "eres lo que comes”? Mientras nos
preparamos para recibir a Jesús en la Sagrada Comunión,
debemos recordar siempre que a través de este regalo nos
convertimos en Jesús. ¡Me escuchaste bien! Cuando comemos
a Jesús, ¡nos convertimos en Jesús! ¿Cómo podemos crecer
en esta conciencia de que Jesús nos invita a descubrir acerca de
Sí mismo? En la lectura de hoy del Libro de los Proverbios y
la Carta a los Efesios, estamos llamados a crecer en la Sabiduría.
Si nos falta conocimiento, entendimiento, debemos comer
y beber del pan y el vino divinos, con los que Dios quiere
alimentar nuestras mentes y nuestros corazones.
Somos llamados a no vivir en la ignorancia. Debemos buscar
la voluntad de Dios en nuestras vidas. Jesús, el Pan de Vida,
nos invita a imitarlo en nuestro deseo de amar y servir a
los demás. Sumergiéndonos en este misterio Eucarístico,
nos transformamos maravillosamente en instrumentos que
proporcionan alimento a los demás. Estamos llamados a
compartir el Pan de la Vida a través de nuestro servicio
generoso y compasivo hacia aquellos que están sufriendo y
en extrema necesidad. Somos el pan que Jesús ha multiplicado
y se identifica visiblemente como Su Iglesia, la comunidad
de creyentes. Esta comunidad está dispuesta a salir al
mundo y contar las Buenas Nuevas de la salvación, a través
de nuestros actos de caridad y servicio. La sabiduría que
fluye del corazón de Dios nos permite ver claramente la
presencia de su Hijo Jesús, que es "El pan que bajó del cielo".
Llenos del don de la sabiduría de Dios, podamos probar y
ver la bondad del Señor .

Summer is almost over –
PRIME TIMERS are about to embark on the 2018-
2019 year. Mark your calendar now! The first
luncheon of the 2018-19 year will be held on Mon-
day, September 17, 2018. Dan Witucki and The
Heimatland Musikanten group will inaugurate the
musical entertainment with their finger snapping and
foot tapping high-spirited “Oktoberfest” music.
The annual mailing to renew membership will be
mailed out soon. Members are asked to submit their
membership renewals early (take advantage of the
“early bird special”) – either by mail or drop-off at
the Cathedral office. Non-member parishioners and
non-parishioners who would like to join Prime

Outreach Love, a tutoring and mentoring group, is
looking for people who want to save the world one kid at a
time. We have those kids. They live right down the
street. Now we need you. Each of you has a talent to
bring to our program. The requirements are simple but
important: we ask that you be able to commit three hours
to tutoring a child every other Saturday morning during
the school year and that you have a desire to make a differ-
ence in that child’s life. If you can do these two things then

Part 3:
Parents are the first teachers. So often, their lessons aren’t what they say, but what they do. Children are so incredibly observant that they pick up things when we think they aren’t looking or listening. They always are.
“Parents have the first responsibility for the education of their children. They bear witness to this responsibility first by creating a home where tenderness, forgiveness, respect, fidelity, and disinterested service are the rule. The home is well suited for education in the virtues” (CCC, 2223).
If we want virtuous children, we ought to be the first ones to practice the virtues. Don’t we have a saying, “The apple doesn’t fall far from the tree”? There is a lot of truth to that. Furthermore, in familial relationships, children learn to relate to their parents very often from the way the parents relate to their mother and father, especially in their old age. The Book of Sirach (3, 12-13) admonishes, O son, help your father in his old age, and do not grieve him as long as he lives; even if he is lacking in understanding, show forbearance; in all your strength do not despise him.... Whoever forsakes his father is like a blasphemer, and whoever angers his mother is cursed by the Lord.
This is an important lesson to learn, an important lesson to pass on.
We live in an incredibly busy society. We run ourselves ragged every day trying to catch up on things that we’re supposed to do. When we do have a little bit of free time, it’s “me time.” Everyone needs that. That being said, because of the hectic nature of our lives, we also can easily lose a sense of priority. We might neglect the important aspects – those that cannot be bought and earned: relationships with the people whom we love.
There is a famous children’s book called Love You Forever. The book is incredibly touching because it highlights the selfless nature of a mother, who, no matter how rambunctious her son was as a little boy, how thoughtless he was as a teenager, and how unconcerned he was as an adult, still sang a simple lullaby: “I’ll love you forever, I’ll like you for always, as long as I’m living my baby you’ll be.”
It wasn’t until the mother was very old and close to death that the son realized how negligent he had been. He was sorry and came to see her at last. For me, it seems to be so late to wait until the very end.
I write this mindful of many lonesome elderly folks in their private homes or assisted-living facilities who haven’t heard or received a visit from their children in a long time. Their grown children think they’re burdensome and a bore, wasting time complaining about inconsequential things. I often wonder how these same men and women would feel in 20 or 30 years from now, when they sit holding their cellphones waiting for their children to call.
But why would they? They have no time.

Si queremos hijos virtuosos, debemos ser los primeros en practicar las virtudes. ¿No decimos que, "la manzana nunca cae muy lejos del árbol"? Hay mucha verdad en esto. Además, en las relaciones familiares, los niños aprenden a relacionarse con sus padres, muy a menudo, en la forma como estos se rela-cionan con su madre y su padre, especialmente en su vejez. El Libro de Sirach (3, 12-13) advierte, Hijo mío, empéñate en honrar a tu padre; no lo abandones mientras tengas vida. Aunque su inteligencia se debilite, sé compasivo con él; no lomientras viva… El que abandona a su padre ofende al Señor, avergüences y el que hace enojar a su madre es maldecido por Dios.
Esta es una importante lección que aprender, una importante lección para ser compartida.
Vivimos en una sociedad increíblemente ocupada. Nos pasamos los días corriendo tratando de ponernos al día con las cosas que se supone que debemos hacer. Cuando tenemos un poco de tiempo libre, es "mi tiempo". Todos lo necesitan. Dicho esto, debido a la naturaleza agitada de nuestras vidas, también podemos perder fácilmente el sentido de prioridad. Podríamos descuidar los aspectos importantes—aquellos que no se pueden comprar, ni ganar: las relaciones con las personas que amamos.
Hay un famoso libro para niños llamado “Siempre te Querré”. El libro es increíblemente conmovedor porque resalta la naturaleza desinteresada de una madre, que, sin importar cuán revoltoso era su niño cuando pequeño, cuán desconsiderado era de adolescente, y cuán despreocupado de adulto, todavía entonaba una simple canción de cuna: “Para siempre te amaré, para siempre te querré, mientras en mi haya vida, siempre serás mi bebé.”
No fue sino hasta que la madre estaba vieja y cercana a la muerte que el hijo se dio cuenta de lo negligente que había sido. Lo sintió y finalmente fue a verla. A mí parece que esperar hasta el final es demasiado.
Escribo esto teniendo en cuenta a muchos ancianos solitarios en sus casas privadas o en instalaciones de vida asistida que no han escuchado ni recibido la visita de sus hijos en mucho tiempo. Sus hijos adultos piensan que son pesados y aburridos, y que pierden el tiempo quejándose de cosas sin importancia. A menudo me pregunto cómo se sentirían estos mismos hombres y mujeres, en 20 o 30 años, esperando la llamada de sus hijos.
Pero, ¿para qué los deberían llamar? Ellos no tienen tiempo.
