In the Catholic tradition we always pray to discern and try to do the will of God in every situation. This requires us to be aware of the forces that constantly push us around and try to sway us from that spiritual path, especially the influence of the world on our thinking believing and living. In the contemporary world the influence of the television and more than that of the social media has a tremendous impact on our minds particularly on the minds of the children. It appears that we are not very concerned about this serious threat to our salvation. Apostle Paul writes to the Thessalonians, and to us as well, that we must let the Lord rule our hearts (2Thes.3:5) so that we will grow in the love of God and follow the example of Jesus where His loyalty to the will of the Father was guiding His choices in the face of imminent torture and shameful death. If we follow this model of Jesus, our focus will be on our eternal life and the Resurrection after death which will restrain us from indulging in all that the world is promoting to enjoy through whatever the world is pushing us into. When we let our hearts be ruled by God, we will not let it be ruled by the world. When ruled by God we will try to live in a way pleasing to God by avoiding choices against the teachings of the Lord through His church. The world will promote that will destroy our loyalty to Jesus. The world promotes pornography that will destroy our morality and marriages, lust, anger, infidelity, betrayal, greed and selfishness, hardness of heart by not forgiving and loving each other in our families. We will yield to these tendencies when we do not let God rule our hearts and the love of God is not growing within us. We have to start making our families the center of our lives. When we play together, pray together, eat together, and enjoy being together as a family, we become happy and joyous. Healthy personality development happens to our kids in such families. This is the Catholic Tradition. Let God rule our hearts not the world and its enticing entertainments. Then love of God will grow in us. Then what is pleasing to Jesus will be our choice. This is how we truly become the children of God. Few of our families have already started this. The kids agreed with the parents not to waste time with the social media, not watch tv shows of no intellectual and educational value, and to spend all weekend together as family, interacting with each other, enjoying the love of the parents and involve in games and activities with the whole family. If we do not create such family atmosphere of prayer, fellowship and mutual respect, we will not help the faith of our children. God bless you all

From the Pastor’s Desk / Del Escritorio del Padre

—Fray Gilberto Cavazos-Glz, OFM, © Copyright, J. TREASURES FROM OUR TRADITION We are faced with strong and disturbing readings today that hold a certain fascination, since they seem at first glance to be blueprints for future inevitable wars and hardship. A fundamentalist interpretation focuses on this aspect. Yet we hear them at our Sunday celebration of the Eucharist, which infuses them with hope and optimism. Rather than dreading the future, today’s liturgy assures us that God is with us in all of life’s inevitable trials, and that we have a role in shaping the outcome of human history. Occasionally, some Christians have attempted to decode these readings for an exact measure of the world’s end, but they have thus far been disappointed.
“Nothing lasts forever” is a lyric from a Broadway show. Stars fall from the sky, leaves wither and fall, mountains wash into the sea, human projects and governments totter and collapse with great regularity. Today’s liturgy opposes this idea as incomplete, reminding us that Christ has made a permanent change in human history, and that life in him is life forever. Rather than inviting us to throw in the towel, today’s liturgy strengthens us for acts of goodness and grace in our families, communities, and world.

LIFE IS HARD, BUT HAVE NO FEAR
Today’s readings take a fearless look at reality and reach a conclusion that we all know: life is hard. The prophet Malachi preaches fire and brimstone, warning us that evildoers will perish in flames. Saint Paul offers his own warning to the Thessalonians: keep busy, but never become a busybody. He reminds Christians that the apostles themselves worked in “toil and drudgery” as a model for how we ought to contribute to our community. The Gospel returns to the apocalyptic tone of Malachi, describing the utter chaos of the end-times. We will know the end is near when violence, catastrophe, and hatred dominate the earth. But we must not fear! God’s saving plan brings peace to our hearts. Malachi speaks of the sun’s “healing rays,” and Jesus himself promises to protect every hair on our heads. Copyright © J. S. LA VIDA ES DURA, PERO NO TENEMOS MIEDO
Copyright © J. S. Paluch Co.

Apocalypse Now and Later
If we thought that Malachi’s images were upsetting, the words of Jesus in the Gospel today are downright terrifying. He is trying to steel his followers for life in this vale of tears, especially the life of righteousness. His followers want to know when, how, where. But Jesus describes a
general state of chaos and troubles, not giving any real data about their future. That’s the point, isn’t it? Even the most casual observer of history in those days could probably remember many instances
of the earth in disorder as described by Jesus. There are wars, earthquakes, and persecutions in every age. The life of a disciple of Jesus is a constant state of bringing light into a darkling world. As
Saint Paul scolds the Thessalonians because they had seemingly given up in expectation of the Apocalypse, Jesus admonishes his followers that discipleship requires always being ready and
always remaining true to the mission.
And so, in light of these warnings, how do we sing our Psalm 98 song of praise in a land of fear and trembling about the future? It is our joyful confidence that the Lord “comes” to rule with justice and
equity—not only in the future, but always.
