Sacrament of the Anointing of the Sick The Anointing of the Sick is celebrated with all those whose health is seriously impaired by sickness and old age and before surgery whenever a serious illness is the reason for the surgery. In cases of an emergency please call the parish office.

Dear St. James Cathedral Family,
Today we celebrate the Solemnity of Pentecost, marking
the birth of the Church! Above the main Altar of our Cathedral
Church we find a breathtaking mural depicting that powerful
scene, taken from St. Luke’s Acts of the Apostles. The
writer conveys to us that the Holy Spirit descended like
tongues of fire, which rested above each of the Apostles of
the Lord. Following the instructions of their Master and
resurrected Lord the disciples remained together in prayer,
waiting to receive the gift of the Holy Spirit. They were
hiding behind closed doors in the upper room for fear of
being discovered by Jewish or roman authorities. The Holy
Spirit strengthened and transformed the disciples’ lives in
such a powerful way that their joy was a testimony of the
new life that began taking place in each one of them. Fears
ceased from detaining them to go out into public places,
announcing the Good News of Jesus Christ!
Two thousand years later that same Holy Spirit continues
to be present and active in our Church. Jesus promised us
that He would remain with us always, and for us never
give in to fear. Empowered by this gift we are also called
to step out of our comfort zones, and share the gift of the
Gospel to others. It is through our willingness to share
this transforming joy and the love that brings us together,
that we can reveal Christ’s presence to all those we meet.
We cannot do this alone. Christ will be our strength! That
is why we are called to follow the example of Christ’s disciples
who modeled for us how to seek the Lord through prayer,
inviting the Holy Spirit to help us make this world a better
place. Take time today and every day to invoke the Holy
Spirit by saying the following prayer:
Come Holy Spirit, fill the hearts of your faithful and kindle in
them the fire of your love. Send forth your Spirit and they shall
be created. And You shall renew the face of the earth. O, God,
who by the light of the Holy Spirit, did instruct the hearts of the
faithful, grant that by the same Holy Spirit we may be truly wise
and ever enjoy His consolations, Through Christ Our Lord,
Amen.

Estimada Familia de la Catedral de Santiago Apóstol,
¡Hoy celebramos la solemnidad de Pentecostés, marcando
el nacimiento de la Iglesia! Sobre el Altar principal de
nuestra Iglesia Catedral, encontramos un impresionante
mural que representa esa escena poderosa, tomada de los
Hechos de los Apóstoles de San Lucas. El escritor nos
transmite que el Espíritu Santo descendió como lenguas de
fuego, que descansaban sobre cada uno de los Apóstoles
del Señor. Siguiendo las instrucciones de su Maestro y
Señor resucitado, los discípulos permanecieron juntos en
oración, esperando recibir el don del Espíritu Santo. Se
escondían a puertas cerradas en la sala superior por miedo
a ser descubiertos por las autoridades judías o romanas. El
Espíritu Santo fortaleció y transformó las vidas de los discípulos
de una manera tan poderosa que su alegría fue un testimonio de
la nueva vida que comenzó a tener lugar en cada uno de
ellos. ¡Los miedos ya no los detenían de salir a lugares pú-
blicos, para anunciar las Buenas Nuevas de Jesucristo!
Dos mil años más tarde, ese mismo Espíritu Santo continúa
estando presente y activo en nuestra Iglesia. Jesús nos
prometió que Él permanecería con nosotros siempre, y que
nunca nos rendiríamos al miedo. Fortalecidos por este regalo,
también estamos llamados a salir de nuestras zonas de
confort y compartir el don del Evangelio a los demás. Es a
través de nuestra voluntad de compartir esta alegría trans-
formadora y el amor que nos une, que podemos revelar la
presencia de Cristo a todos aquellos con quienes nos en-
contramos. No podemos hacer esto solos. ¡Cristo es nuestra
fortaleza! Es por eso que estamos llamados a seguir el
ejemplo de los discípulos de Cristo que nos enseñan cómo
buscar al Señor a través de la oración, invitando al Espíritu
Santo a ayudarnos a hacer de este mundo un lugar mejor.
Toma tiempo hoy y todos los días para invocar al Espíritu
Santo al decir la siguiente oración:
Ven, Espíritu Santo, llena los corazones de tus fieles y enciende
en ellos el fuego de tu amor. Envía, Señor, tu Espíritu y renueva
la faz de la Tierra. Oh Dios, que llenaste los corazones de tus
fieles con la luz del Espíritu Santo; haznos dóciles a tu Espíritu,

Pentecost Sunday
Today we celebrate the gift of the Holy Spirit, the birth of the Church and the beginning of its mission in the world. Pentecost Sunday reminds us that our lives are filled with the Holy Spirit and God has accomplished creative things in us through this gift. We have been entrusted with this great gift of the Holy Spirit. Now is a good time to ask: Are we being good stewards of this gift? What creative things have we done to glorify God’s accomplishments in us?

Miguel will relate his “Journey To The Priesthood” (pictures included) and a photo review of our 2017-2018 year along with fellowship and fun and saying so long until we meet again in September. This will be the final luncheon for the 2017-2018 year – we will resume on Monday, September 17, 2018 – mark your calendars now for the first meeting of the 2018-2019 year.

“For those who do not love a brother or sister whom they have seen, cannot love God whom they have not seen.” (1Jn: 4:20)—PART 5
Recently, Pope Francis released a document reflecting on Christian holiness. Different news outlets (American mostly) have made headlines out of it, saying that the pope “equates” opposing abortion with caring for the poor and migrants. Here is the exact quote for you to judge for yourselves: “Our defense of the innocent unborn, for example, needs to be clear, firm and passionate, for at stake is the dignity of a human life, which is always sacred and demands love for each person, regardless of his or her stage of development. Equally sacred, however, are the lives of the poor, those already born, the destitute, the abandoned and the underprivileged, the vulnerable infirm and elderly exposed to covert euthanasia, the victims of human trafficking, new forms of slavery, and every form of rejection.” —Gaudete et exultate, 101. Personally, I don’t find what is so shocking about that thought. As we have reflected in these past few weeks, a human life is a human life – sacred and precious in all its stages, be it the moment of conception or the moment one takes the last breath. The reason it becomes such a shock and certainly gets quite a lot of so-called “conservative” Catholics so outraged is because, as I have said often, this society has become so politicized. Gospel values in people’s minds have been heavily influenced, not by divine teachings as much as by political ideologies. In the 1990s, Cardinal Joseph Bernardin raised concern about the need for consistent ethics of life, which he called “a seamless garment.” We become overly obsessed with one issue and neglect all others. If we are going to be pro-life Catholics, be sure to be pro-life from beginning to end, and every stage in between. If we only pick and choose what to believe and what to follow, how are we any better than the Pharisees, who focused way too much on ritual purity but neglected the value of social justice? What gives a human life inviolable value? It is because humans are created in the image and likeness of God. There is a divine sacredness in me as much as in you. Therefore, we are to respect life, value life, and defend life. It is also on this foundation that I called us to look at the immigration issue. Please don’t get me wrong. I am not trying to advocate for one policy over another. I am not saying that the government should just let in whoever wishes to enter. No! Even the social teachings of the Church acknowledge that each sovereign nation has the right to protect its borders and to ensure its citizens’ safety and prosperity. That is the right that outsiders need to respect and follow. If someone violates such a right, they ought to be held accountable. The reason for me to stress the inviolable dignity and value of each person is to keep us from having an attitude of superiority. We ought to be very careful when we feel a sense of privilege or entitlement just because of our birth, background, or status. As Christians, is our citizenship not of heaven? (cf. Phil. 3:20) God is our Father; we are all the same. Instead of labeling people as legal or illegal, immigrants or citizens, can we begin to see people as people with challenges and difficulties as anyone else? Can we look beyond the legal status and listen to their stories instead? Perhaps, in learning to see beyond the labels, we might just discover there are a lot more commonalities than we care to admit. After all, we are all human beings dealing with the same drama of so-called humanity.

“La defensa del inocente que no ha nacido, por ejemplo, debe ser clara, firme y apasionada, porque allí está en juego la dignidad de la vida humana, siempre sagrada, y lo exige el amor a cada persona más allá de su desarrollo. Pero igualmente sagrada es la vida de los pobres que ya han nacido, que se debaten en la miseria, el abandono, la postergación, la trata de personas, la eutanasia encubierta en los enfermos y ancianos privados de atención, las nuevas formas de esclavitud, y en toda forma de descarte.” —Gaudete et exultate, 101.
Personalmente, no encuentro que este pensamiento sea tan impactante. Como hemos reflexionado en estas últimas sema-nas, vida humana es vida humana, sagrada y preciosa en todas sus etapas, ya sea en el momento de la concepción o en el momento en que uno exhala el último aliento.
La razón por la que se crea conmoción y sin duda indigna a los tan llamados Católicos "conservadores" es porque, como he dicho a menudo, esta sociedad se ha politizado demasiado. Los valores del Evangelio en las mentes de las personas han sido fuertemente influenciados, no tanto por las enseñanzas divinas como por las ideologías políticas.
En la década de 1990, el cardenal Joseph Bernardin expresó su preocupación por la necesidad de una ética de vida conse-cuente, a la que llamó "una prenda sin costuras". Nos obsesionamos demasiado con un tema y descuidamos todos los de-más. Si vamos a ser Católicos pro-vida, asegúrese de ser pro-vida de principio a fin, y en cada etapa intermedia. Si solo es-cogemos y elegimos qué creer y qué seguir, ¿cómo somos mejores que los Fariseos, que se enfocaron demasiado en la pure-za ritual pero descuidaron el valor de la justicia social?
¿Qué le da a la vida humana un valor inviolable? Es porque los humanos son creados a la imagen y semejanza de Dios. Hay una sacralidad divina en mí tanto como en ti. Por lo tanto, debemos respetar la vida, valorar la vida y defender la vida.
También es sobre esta base que les invito a analizar el problema de la inmigración.
Por favor no me malinterpreten. No estoy tratando de abogar por una política sobre otra. No estoy diciendo que el gobierno debería dejar entrar a quien quiera entrar. ¡No! Incluso las enseñanzas sociales de la Iglesia reconocen que cada nación so-berana tiene derecho a proteger sus fronteras y garantizar la seguridad y la prosperidad de sus ciudadanos. Ese es el dere-cho que los de afuera deben respetar y seguir. Si alguien viola tal derecho, debe rendir cuentas.
La razón por la cual enfatizo la dignidad y el valor inviolables de cada persona es para evitar que tengamos una actitud de superioridad. Deberíamos ser muy cuidadosos cuando sentimos que tenemos privilegio o derecho solo por donde nacimos, de dónde venimos o nuestro estatus social. Como Cristianos, ¿no es nuestra ciudadanía del cielo? (Filipenses 3:20)
Dios es nuestro Padre; nosotros somos todos iguales.
En lugar de etiquetar a las personas como legales o ilegales, inmigrantes o ciudadanos, ¿podemos comenzar a ver a las per-sonas como personas con desafíos y dificultades como cualquier otra persona? ¿Podemos mirar más allá del estado legal y escuchar sus historias en su lugar? Tal vez, al aprender a ver más allá de las etiquetas, descubramos que hay muchas más cosas en común de las que queremos admitir.
Después de todo, todos somos seres humanos que lidiamos con el mismo drama de la llamada humanidad.
