The front facade was
designed to be mostly
shaded during the summer
and light in the winter. This
shading will help control
the temperature within the
building. This is especially
important since the south
facade is mainly glass.
The design for the reading
rooms comes from the
desire for ambient lighting.
Like the north-east corner
of University Pavilion at
UC, the reading rooms will
receive some direct light in
the mornings. To combat
glare and heat gain, a row
of maple trees will line the
side. However, in the winter
they will lose their leaves
warming up the reading
rooms early in the day.
During most of the hours of
use there will be ambient
lighting in the space.
