REGISTRATION PROCEDURES

STEP 1 Read the catalog or check out course information at www.canyonstech.org. Select a program. Courses are available to Junior and Senior students only. Any student enrolled at CTEC must also be registered at a Canyons School District or Wasatch Front Consortium affiliated high school.

STEP 2 Evaluate your schedule, graduation status, time restrictions, and career goals with your

CTE Coordinator and/or counselor at your school. Review the course requirements and take the steps necessary to meet those requirements.

STEP 3 Fill out the online application. Go to www.canyonstech.org and click on the link

Online Application. Make sure that you are using a computer that has the latest version of Adobe Reader Installed. (Get the free latest version of Adobe Reader from http://www.get.adobe.com/reader). After you have filled out the application completely, click the Submit Form button. If you wish to apply for more than one program, you must fill out separate applications and submit them online as well.

STEP 4 Pre-testing is required for some CTEC programs. Check the catalog or the Pre-Testing

Schedule and Information link on the website to see if it is required for your program. STEP 5 See your school’s CTE Coordinator to have your high school transcript forwarded to

Canyons Technical Education Center. STEP 6 Selected students will receive notification of acceptance from the Canyons Technical

Education Center. Your school will register you for classes. A class schedule should be ready for you on the day designated by your school. If you were not selected for the class you chose, see your CTE Coordinator to discuss alternative courses.

COURSE DESCRIPTION: First Year: Students will be able to diagnose and repair collision damage. They will gain a basic understanding of: • Estimating • Metal repair • Paint chemistry/application • Fiberglass and plastic repair • Automotive-related welding Second Year: Students will further develop their first year skills and be able to pursue their areas of interest in more detail. This course provides students with entry level knowledge and skills as an Auto Collision Technician. It also prepares students for opportunities in post-secondary education as an Auto Collision Technician. Students can qualify to participate in job shadowing and in externships. COURSE OBJECTIVES: This course provides students with entry-level knowledge and skills in preparation to work in the auto collision industry. It also provides pathways for students to pursue in post-secondary education in this field. Career and Technology credit, competency certification, job placement assistance, youth leadership opportunities, Concurrent Enrollment credit, up to 12 credits. COURSE EXPECTATIONS: Students will be working with power tools and hazardous materials such as paint, solvents, and fillers. Safety glasses, paint respirator, and proper clothing are required. This is a competency based course. Each competency will help students develop skills needed in the collision repair industry. Student projects will require approval; costs will be paid by the student.

First Year: Skills learned include layout work, stairway installation, windows, and trusses, footings, sheetrock and taping, cement flat work, finish carpentry, sub-floors, aluminum cornice and siding installation, framing of walls and roof, shingle application, proper use of tools, reading blueprints, following safety instructions, masonry and ceramic tile. Second Year: Students will further develop their first year skills and be able to pursue an area of interest in more depth. COURSE OBJECTIVES: Career and Technology credit, youth leadership opportunities, job placement assistance, concurrent enrollment credit. COURSE EXPECTATIONS: Training will take place at a construction site close to the CTEC campus. COURSE DESCRIPTION :In this program, students will learn success strategies, design their own program of study, and gain actual work experience as a professional employee in a simulated business environment. Students will complete professional seminars on Time Management, Maximum Achievement: Keys to Peak Performance and Personal Leadership; Programming Yourself for Success; Good to Great; One-Minute Manager; The “Fish” Philosophy; and Who Moved My Cheese. Students may earn up to 12 college credits in Management and Communications.

COURSE OBJECTIVES: Students will obtain actual management experience and build a resume and an impressive job portfolio of competency certificates for future employers. Students will also create an actual strategic business plan and gain real-life business knowledge and experience. Students who complete the management program will leave empowered.

COURSE DESCRIPTION: The CTEC Cosmetology/Barbering Program is a SLCC Concurrent Enrollment program. The program provides the high school student with the ability to advance their education and practical skills before their high school graduation. Students earn hours towards the State of Utah required 2000 clock hours and credits towards SLCC Barber/Cosmetology course curriculum requirements. Upon high school graduation, the student will have a head start in their education of the Cosmetology/Barbering fields. The Cosmetology/Barbering lab runs as a full service salon that is open to the public. The student has the opportunity to practice men’s and women’s hair styling, cutting, coloring, perming, chemical relaxing, skin care, and nail care with emphasis on safety, sanitation and professionalism.

COURSE OBJECTIVES AND EXPECTATIONS: To complete the state licensing requirements, after high school graduation the student will need to complete their required clock hours by enrolling into a cosmetology/barber program of their choice. Students interested in completing their SLCC certificate will need to attend the 5 required college classes and clock hours to fulfill the SLCC Cosmetology/Barbering course curriculum. Upon the students’ completion of the state license requirements, the student will be prepared to take the National-Interstate Council of State Boards of Cosmetology, INC. (NIC) test and apply for a Cosmetology/Barbering license.

COURSE DESCRIPTION: This program is designed to introduce students to the Criminal Justice system in conjunction with the SLCC Criminal Justice curriculum. Each student will have the opportunity to enroll in SLCC Concurrent Enrollment and receive college credit for this course work. During this semester class, the student will take criminal justice courses covering subjects such as Criminal Justice, Criminal Law, and Careers in Law Enforcement.

COURSE OBJECTIVES: Upon successful completion of these courses, the student will have the knowledge and will have completed the necessary classes to enroll in other college-level criminal justice courses toward an associate degree through SLCC and/or enrollment in the SLCC self-sponsored Peace Officer’s Standards and Training (POST) Peace Officer Certification. COURSE EXPECTATIONS: Come to class ready to pay attention and work. Only one thing will mean the difference for you and for you community: WORK. But not just any kind of work will do. Come to class excited about learning principles of law, equity, moral absolutism, and magnanimity of character—the true purveyances of justice. COURSE DESCRIPTION: Level 1: This course prepares students for a variety of careers in the field of digital media. Within an environment geared towards creativity and teamwork, students will have the opportunity to develop a variety of skills in areas such as: 2D and 3D graphics, text, 2D and 3D animation, audio and video. Students will also learn project development skills such as project management, script writing, storyboarding, design skills, and project evaluation and critiquing skills. After completion of the course, all students will leave with a professional digital portfolio containing their work. Some examples of student projects may include: illustrations, posters, CD covers, advertisements, training software, video games, animations, radio spots, original music score, etc.

Level 2: Students who return for a second year will continue to develop their professional portfolio and learn higher level skills.

COURSE OBJECTIVES: The objective of this course is to prepare students to participate in paid internships and receive training in a high skill, creative and fun occupation.

COURSE EXPECTATIONS: Each student must abide by the CTEC and Canyons District Computer Usage Policy. Excellent attendance is critical for success in this course.

COURSE DESCRIPTION: Installation of electrical equipment and systems in accordance with the National Electrical Code (NEC) and local regulations. Students will learn residential and commercial wiring methods, trade mathematics, reading, interpreting NEC 2011, trade and theory applications, reading and following diagrams and blueprints, troubleshooting and problem-solving, work as member of a construction team, prepare and apply for a job. Students will receive a general overview of building construction as it relates to electrical installation by working at the project house. COURSE OBJECTIVES: Students will learn construction and electrical safety, conductors, hand bending, fasteners and anchors, electrical theory one and two, electrical test equipment, introduction to the NEC, raceways, boxes and fittings, Career and Technology credit, youth leadership opportunities, job placement assistance. COURSE EXPECTATIONS: Training will take place in a classroom setting and at a construction site close to the CTEC campus. Students will be climbing ladders and scaffolds (at heights); working with power equipment, and have exposure to electrical circuitry.

EMERGENCY MEDICAL TECHNICIAN (EMT) Health Sciences

High School Credit: CTE Credit or Elective Credit: 4 credits total Concurrent Credit: MA 1100: 2 credits (optional) 9 Extra credits available through UVU upon certification Industry Certification: Students will prepare to take Utah Basic EMT Certification Test. Required: Seniors MUST be 18 by August of the year of program completion. It is

strongly recommended that students have current immunizations including the hepatitis A and B series. A current TB test is also required. Students must provide their own transportation to all clinical sessions. Students must be able to lift 125 pounds.

Recommended: Previous Courses in Biology, Health Occupations, Medical Anatomy and

Physiology are suggested. Pretesting: Required, contact CTE Coordinator at your school for test dates.

COURSE DESCRIPTION: This course prepares students with the skills to function as an EMT and to administer Basic Life Support by: assessing patients, bandaging, splinting and immobilizing procedures, administering first aid, assisting with allowed medications of patients, lifting, moving and transporting patients, working as a member of a medical team; airway stabilization, medical terminology, operating a defibrillator, assisting patients with childbirth, measurement and monitoring of vital signs.

COURSE OBJECTIVES: The objective of this course is to prepare students to take the State EMT licensing exam, become CPR certified, earn college credit, and to be prepared for further education in the health field.
