Is the driver shortage putting the brakes on your business?Rick Goodman has been advising owners of transportation companies for years on everything from CARB compliance to creative financing solutions. Having the right advisor, one who’s in your corner helping you navigate the complex business issues of our industry, is invaluable to the growth and sustainability of your business.

Sunwest Bank is a proud CTA Circle Club Partner.

S ince officially becoming CTA President on February 1t, there has been no

honeymoon or grace period. In just the last few weeks since the Annual Membership Conference, I have spent time working with CTA staff in Sacramento, working on the CTA Independent Contractor Task Force down in Los Angeles, as well as attended my first President’s Night, hosted by the San Joaquin Unit February 20 at the Stockton Country Club in Stockton (kudos to the Unit for a wonderful event). And I also joined an elite “strike force” of members in Washington, DC for visits with the California congressional delegation, addressing what most of us know as the Denham amendment (named after Congressman and good friend to CTA, Jeff Denham, R-Turlock).

This legislation, included in the "Aviation Innovation, Reform, and Reauthorization Act of 2016," and referred to as "Section 611," is intended to clarify what currently exists in federal laws and regulations relating to interstate trucking, preempting states from imposing differing state legislation and regulations addressing meal and rest breaks and productivity-based pay.

I mention this trip for a couple of reasons. One, if, by the time you see this message, we are still continuing our efforts to get the Denham amendment language passed into law (realities are, things don’t always get done quickly in DC), please give strong consideration to joining our future efforts to do so.

But the other reason I mention this trip is less about the specific issue and more about the call to action.

As significant of a presence our industry has in this state (i.e. our major role in the overall supply chain), our collective political impact and voice in Sacramento (and also in Washington, D.C.) needs to be even bigger and louder! That is where all of you who read this publication and don’t already actively engage on our issues on behalf of CTA and the industry come in.

We are all key members of the business community and the citizenry in California - we have invested in warehouses, terminals, offices and trucks here. As businesses that provide a key in the chain of commerce, we provide much-needed jobs and tax revenue; and, I hope, we all do our civic duty and vote to elect those who serve our communities at all levels of government. Who better to reach out to these elected officials to voice our opinions and educate them on our issues than ALL of us?

For all these reasons, I implore you to get involved – get PERSONALLY AND ACTIVELY involved with CTA and our efforts to educate the decision-makers who are drafting and voting on new laws and regulations that directly impact how (or if) we do business in this state, serve our customers and provide jobs to our employees and business opportunities to others supporting our businesses.

To cite a phrase that always resonates with me when I hear from folks who complain about how things are, yet do not make the effort to share their views/concerns with those who can do something about them – “you can either be at the table or you can be on the menu!” The choice is yours. Let’s choose to work together to have a bigger seat at the table.

Being at The Table or On the Menu

Dana Brooks, CTA Vice President of Membership & Business Development

A state trucking association should be positioned to become an industry

alliance and resource base enabling all members to benefit from the strength and knowledge of the group coming together and thereby receive value. CTA and its members is a perfect example of such a state trucking association. The driving force of our association are our trucking company members who are actively involved.

CTA is a trade association which means when your company joins CTA, each and every company employee can tap into the services and programs offered by your association.

Getting your employees involved in CTA shows your employees that you have a vested interest in their growth, education and professional development. In return your employees will bring the knowledge they gained by attending a meeting, calling our helpline, visiting the members only portal of our website or joining one of our webinars back to your company. This will help you have a more educated and forward thinking staff and company.

To get the most out of your membership encourage your employees to learn more about the services your association offers. Have them reach out to the CTA membership staff and we will be happy to guide your staff on how to get more involved and or learn about some of the many new exclusive CTA discount programs that can help your bottom line.

In 2016 pledge that you will encourage your employees to take advantage of the value for which you are already paying for by:

1. Having your staff attend your local Unit meetings at

least once a year. If you or your staff have not attended a Unit meeting recently make it a point to do so. Our Units are the heart of CTA and bring fantastic education to each local area. The education offered varies from education for your HR, Safety, Operations and/or Accounting staff touching every department in your company. Your staff gets an opportunity to learn from other industry leaders and bring back ideas, solutions and best practices.

2. Encourage your staff to volunteer at a Unit meeting, Unit fundraiser or even to get involved in the local Steering and Planning committee. This can be a time commitment as little as 1-2 hours a year helping at a unit meeting fundraiser, education or community event. At a time commitment of 1-2 hours a month your staff can get involved in a committee which will teach leadership skills and benefit your company in return.

3. Have your staff get to know your association's professional staff. In time of need they know who to turn to when they are looking for resources. We are here for you and we want to help.

4. Empower your staff to do more year-round networking with the members of your association. They truly are an invaluable resource in both good and bad times.

What you as a leader do to strengthen your team of employees will directly have an impact on strengthening your company’s future and growth. Giving your employees the tools to succeed by utilizing your association resources will pay dividends into the future and creates a strong, educated, empowered and loyal team of employees.

Reach out to our membership team today and we will be happy to help you and your employees to utilize your membership to its fullest.

Contact us by email: Heather Ward, [email protected]; Lupita Flores [email protected]; Loraine Melani, [email protected] or Dana Brooks, [email protected]. Or phone: 916-373-3500.

Because he’s with the CTSA workers’ compensation program. Walt explains, “ I keep hearing about rates going up and carriers leaving the state, but we don’t have those worries—we’re with California Truckers’ Safety Association, a financially sound, exclusive work comp program that allows members to share in the dividends. Our workers’ comp rates have been low and consistently stable since 2003. ”

CTA and AccuSure Announce New Discount Option

The California Trucking Association and AccuSure are proud to launch an additional workers’ compensation insurance

rate discount program with Avitus, supported by Insured Solutions.

The new PEO program facilitated by AccuSure is yet another 6% filed rate discount for workers’ compensation policies effective immediately for CTA members. In order to receive the discounts, make sure your insurance agent submits the quote requests directly to AccuSure ([email protected]) preferably 90 days before your work comp policy expires.

AccuSure’s free platform helps CTA members in three ways:1. Access rate discount programs.2. Streamlines the gathering of information needed for

insurance quotes.3. Easy access to competitive options in marketplace.Avitus/Insured Solutions modernizes the PEO (Professional

Employer Organization) model in three ways:1. Transparent rate structure on all fees & employer taxes.

CTA Member Nominated for Keworth Dealer of the Year Recognition

Tom Bertolino, vice president and dealer principal of NorCal Kenworth in California, was nominated for Truck Dealer

of the Year, an annual award presented by the American Truck Dealers, Heavy Duty Trucking magazine and Procede Software. The winner and runner-up will be announced during the 53rd annual ATD Convention & Expo in Las Vegas, which runs from March 31 to April 3 in conjunction with the NADA Convention & Expo.

Bertolino began his career in the commercial truck

industry in 1985 working for Kenworth Truck Company. His final position before becoming a dealer was general sales manager. In 1999, he and his partner, Harry Mamizuka, purchased Bay Area Kenworth and Sacramento Kenworth and set out to rebuild the business with guidance from customers, employees and others in the Kenworth dealer network. "Through hard work, focus and dedication, we made a net profit for the first full year in 1999," said

Bertolino. “It was challenging but rewarding watching our team develop before our eyes.”

Today, they own four Kenworth locations throughout Northern California. In 2011, they finished their final renovation. "It took us 12 years to accomplish, but we now have four first class facilities that we are very proud of," Bertolino said.

Why is Jon Cramer of CFL, Inc. and Certified Freight Logistics, Inc. Smiling?

7033 Owensmouth AvenueCanoga Park, CA 91303

CA Lic. # 0442083

Because he’s with the CTSA workers’ compensation program. Jon explains, “We have been a member of CTSA since close to the

beginning, directly participating in claims management giving us the ability to

close claims. This has been very beneficial in controlling our work comp costs

leading us back to returned dividends. What a great financially solid program.”Your broker can’t access this program, but we can. Even if you’ve already renewed —it’s not too late to save.

CTA Members Help Out Insurance Agents

CTA member companies Roadstar Trucking and KKW Trucking held No Zone/Large Truck training with

California Progressive Insurance agents recently.CTA Past President Bob Ramorino or Roadstar coordinated

an event in Northern California. When Progressive wanted to do a training session in Southern California he contacted CTA Officer Lynnette Brown at KKW for help.

The event was geared to train the Progressive agents from a truck driver’s perspective, to help them gain understanding on blind spot and other issues that truck drivers face on the road.

Progressive Insurance’s pitch person “Flo” was on hand for a No-Zone training event for insurance agents featuring KKW’s No-Zone truck.

Progressive insurance agents in Southern California get some basic training about No-Zones from staff at KKW trucking during a training event last month.
