Brain Teaser of the week

You are a cook in a remote area with no clocks or other way of

keeping time other than a four-minute and a seven-minute

hourglass. On the stove is a pot of boiling water. Jill asks you to

cook a nine-minute egg in exactly 9 minutes, and you know she

is a perfectionist and can tell if you undercook or overcook the

egg by even a few seconds. How can you cook the egg for

exactly 9 minutes?

The solution to this teaser will be in next week's news

letter.

Famous quotes

Quote:

We think sometimes that poverty is only being hungry, naked and homeless. The poverty of being unwanted, unloved and uncared for is the greatest poverty. We must start in our own homes to remedy this kind of

poverty.

Who is Mother Teresa

Mother Teresa

Blessed Teresa of Calcutta, born Anjezë Gonxhe Bojaxhiu and commonly known as Mother Teresa (26 August 1910 – 5 September 1997), was an ethnic Albanian, Indian Roman Catholic nun.

Mother Teresa founded the Missionaries of Charity, a Roman Catholic religious congregation, which in 2012 consisted of over 4,500 sisters and is active in 133 countries. They run hospices and homes for people with HIV/AIDS, leprosy and tuberculosis; soup kitchens; children's and family counseling programmes; orphanages; and schools. Members of the order must adhere to the vows of chastity, poverty and obedience, and the fourth vow, to give "Wholehearted and Free service to the poorest of the poor".

She was the recipient of numerous honours including the 1979 Nobel Peace Prize. In late 2003, she was beatified, the third step toward possible sainthood, giving her the title "Blessed Teresa of Calcutta". A second miracle credited to Mother Teresa is required before she can be recognised as a saint by the Catholic Church.

[1] She was admired by

many; in 1999, a poll of Americans ranked her first in Gallup's List of Most Widely Admired People of the 20th Century. However, she has also been accused of failing to provide medical care or painkillers, misusing charitable money, and maintaining positive relationships with dictators.

Red Stone Hills and adjacent properties are situated on the fringe of the semi-arid plains of the Little Karoo. The most important habitats for birds

include (a) the open karroid veld dominated by s tunted trees, mainly Gwarrie Euclea undulata, and low succulent shrubs; (b) the dense thickets on

the hillsides, where the rainfall is higher; (c) the fynbos which occurs on the summits of the hills and where the Waboom Protea nitida dominates;

(d) several permanent streams, lined by both indigenous and alien vegetation, which transverse the area providing a habitat for birds that do not

normally occur in this dry environment; (e) man-made habitats such as the lucerne fields and poplar woods which support birds that would not

otherwise enter the Little Karoo.

The best time for birders to visit the area is after substantial rains in spring and early summer. No bird check-list is ever complete and the

compilers would appreciate receiving information on additional species that have been positively identified.

BIRD OF THE WEEK

Birds spotted at Redstone Hills and environs.

Names as used in Sasol – The Larger Illustrated Guide to Birds

of Southern Africa: 2nd

edition 2005.

ID: 65

Species: Purple Heron Spotted: recorded January, February, August, November and

December, breeds, visitor.

The Purple Heron (Ardea purpurea) is a wading bird in

the heron family Ardeidae, breeding in Africa, central and southern Europe, and southern and eastern Asia. The European populations are migratory, wintering in tropical Africa; the more northerly Asian populations also migrate further south within Asia. It is a rare but regular wanderer north of its breeding range.

Purple Heron

Description: The Purple Heron is a large bird, 78–97 cm (31–38 in) in length with a standing height from to 70 to 94 cm (28 to 37 in) and a 120–152 cm (47–60 in) wingspan.

[2][3] However, it is slender for its size, weighing only 0.5–1.35 kg (1.1–3.0 lb).

[4] It is somewhat smaller than the Grey

Heron, from which it can be distinguished by its darker reddish-brown plumage, and, in adults, darker grey back. It has a narrower yellow bill, which is brighter in breeding adults. The most similarly-colored heron is the Goliath Heron, which is considerably larger. Taxonomy: There are three or four subspecies:

Ardea purpurea purpurea Linnaeus, 1766. Africa, Europe north to the Netherlands, and southwestern Asia east to Kazakhstan.

Ardea purpurea bournei (de Naurois, 1966), Bourne's Heron. Cape Verde Islands(included in purpurea by some authors, but treated as

a distinct species Ardea bourneiby some others).

Ardea purpurea madagascariensis Oort, 1910. Madagascar.

Ardea purpurea manilensis Meyen, 1834. Asia from Pakistan east to the Philippines and Indonesia, and north to Primorsky Krai, Russia.

Behaviour: The Purple Heron breeds in colonies in reed beds or trees close to large lakes or other extensive wetlands. It builds a bulky stick nest. It feeds in shallow water, spearing fish, frogs, insects and small mammals. It will often wait motionless for prey, or slowly stalk its victim. It tends to keep within reedbeds more than the Grey Heron, and is often inconspicuous, despite its size.

It has a slow flight, with its neck retracted. This is characteristic of herons and bitterns, and distinguishes them from storks, cranes andspoonbills,

which extend their necks. The long neck of Purple Heron looks particularly snake-like, with more of an S-shape in flight. The call is a loud croaking

"krek".

The Purple Heron is one of the species to which the Agreement on the Conservation of African-Eurasian Migratory Waterbirds (AEWA) applies.

o KBU Nuus/ KRU News

===============================================================================================

====

You are hereby invited to the KRU Meeting on Wednesday 10th July as per attached Agenda.

This meeting was decided on at a meeting held in Calitzdorp on the 19th June 2013 in Calitzdorp.

Your presence is important to us because the KRU will be electing a new Management Team in order to balance the workload.

We are trying to mobilise involvement throughout all the communities within Kannaland to oversee our interests as municipal

ratepayers and

clients who pay for services provided by Kannaland Municipality. Our municipality (KM) is not totally defunct. Indeed, we have

water, electricity

and our rubbish is being removed. The KRU endeavours to co-operate, submit positive suggestions and sometimes delivers positive

criticism.

However, we have to fullfill a Watchdog function on behalf of our community as a whole. Thus the KRU's focus is entirely on

municipal issues.

You, as a property owner and Resident who pays for services, whether via an account or pre-paid, has an equal right on decent

services and

proper management of your funds. We cannot allow that we are continually being bullied through mismanagement, improper

spending and

wasteful expenditure while some of our municipal officials earn of the highest salaries within the Eden District Municipality. Salaries

which

are way out of line with the norm within Kannaland.

Are you aware of how the new Budget will affect your pocket?

Are you satisfied with current service delivery?

Do you want a safe, and healthy environment for you and your family?

Then it is now the right time to become involved and join the KRU.

Baie dankie// Thank you

The Calitzdorp Port and Wine Festival was held in Calitzdorp recently and the committee will shortly be meeting to start preparing for the 2014 festival. We will need to assess the success or otherwise of this year's festival. We believe that some aspects of the weekend were more successful than others, but as the members of the committee were heavily involved with attempting to ensure that everything ran smoothly at all events we were not afforded the luxury of being able to stand back a little and take a more detached view of the proceedings. We have not prepared evaluation forms to assist in the assessment of the festival; however, we would welcome the views of everybody who attended any of the events during the weekend from the Friday evening in Calitzdorp to the Monday afternoon. The opinions of people who happened to take part in the festival are valid and very important to us. You can express your views on the venues, welcome, standard of performers and programme of events etc, either by contacting the festival office at 044 213 3725 or by sending your comments by e-mail to [email protected]. To assist, just state which event or events you attended. We look forward to receiving any constructive comments, praise or criticism.
