Lots of torque, quick, reasonably good milage. Top speed over 90, never really tried to peg it yet. Smoothest running motor I ever built. Very minor oil leaks at the pulley and crank seal. (about what you would expect!)

200 from previous rebuild then front main bearing badly scored so I rebuilt it again, 0 miles on new rebuild

I ran up the street in the summer and it seems to perform well, can't wait to get it on the street. Seems very torqy and the power really comes on at 2000 rpm and revs easily. I may have hampered drivability with the lightened flywheel though. Exhaust beginnings and engine and be seen and heard at http://www.angelfire.com/bc/jmartin/exhaust.html

Old Bus case, Bored for machine-in 88 P&C's, Full-Flowed, was align-bored at one time.

Vintage Klobenschmidt (sp?) machine-in 88's, cylinders were honed, running Teflon buttons

Reground stock camshaft. Was suppose to be ground to Engle 110 specs, but lift at cam specs out more like a 100

Stock heads 35.5X32, stock springs/retainers, bored for 88's, I P&P'd the heads and reshaped the combustion chambers.

Dual Weber 34 ICT's on short manifolds and not running a balance tube

Low mileage used Schadek 26mm pump modified for full-flow

Old used stock non-doghouse type, w/ original 36hp fan shroud

Original Stock SSC, 3:88R&P, with new mounts, traction bar and a front tranny strap

Just something to beat around on the street/strip until I get my Ghia back together

This engine has some really pathetic 1/4 ET's in it. Top end just isn't there. Bottom end is great though. Launches really hard and revs up fast. The small carbs really limit the engine and don't take advantage of the ported heads, plus it's a low reving motor with that stock crank. The engine is really screaming for some Weber 40IDF's. www.picturetrail.com/widefive

J-tubes with 'Monza-style' exhaust, tip through stock cut-outs in apron

Still a work in progress. The stock carb is in rough shape, takes a little while to warm up the engine. Don't have a tach, so can't tell the revs, other than it sounds loud! I'll update as time goes on. Thanks for Craig VanDam for building the engine.

This was my first performance engine. It wasn't fast enough for me at all. Bottom end felt soggy, but I expected that a little w/ the large 36mm vents and 1 5/8" exhaust. Didn't really pull hard until 3,500-4,00rpm. It ran very well for what it was, but this year I'm going 1914cc with a close ratio box. Feel free to email me with any questions. This engine kicks butt. I have built many combinations of engines for Transporters and this one works the best. No hill slows me down fully loaded. 18 to 22 mpg. Easily cruises at 75 mph. The downside is the bus DOES NOT like to cruise at 55. For Caravans I have to drive a different bus.

Motor cooled well in the Northeast, but when I moved to Florida in 1991 I was having an overheating problem and my workload prevented me from fixing it, so I put the car in storage. I'm now living in Virginia and have fixed the problem. The CMC body didn't have enough room for a stock shroud. I had used a stock shroud that I had cut down and it wasn't giving me full cooling. I have cut the inside of the hood reglassed it and moved the hinges to make room for a full shroud. I also switched my ring gear from a 3.88 to a 4.11 and added a type 4 cooler (not necessary). This motor has a very good torque curve and is indestructable. It has power from right off idle and if I rev it up and dump the clutch it will burn out all the way across an intersection. It's just fun to drive. It is very low maintenance and has a working heater that has been tested driving to Fall VW events in New Hampshire. With all Berg parts it would be a very expensive motor to build today.

More fun than it should be. There's plenty of low end torque and it pulls well into the higher RPM range. The Berg 5 tranny truly makes it a street racer with the ability to cruise the interstates at 70mph all day long. When "on" it i get fuel milage in the mid teens, but cruising on the interstate it gets 28mpg. The car is a sleeper in that the exterior is totally stock, even down to the large late model bumpers. It really suprises the V8 boys. For more info take a look at http://www.glenn-ring.com/rest

GEX powerflow p&p dual springs 40x35.5mm ss valves rebuilt casting:-(

front: super swamper tsl 28x8.50-14 rear: mickey thompson baja belted 30x9.50-15

I think it needs bigger carbs. I had the cash when I built it but I cheaped out. the heads, too. oh, well. still, it's got a lot of ass, especially if i keep the rpm's up. really fun to drive. in the end, that's all i'm looking for.the GEX stuff been holding up so far and i really dog the shit out of it. from what i've read about GEX's products, I must have record mileage on a set of their rebuilt heads. Could have bought new for a hundred bucks more each

I am very pleased with this combo. I limit the rpm’s to a max of 7400 rpm. I want this engine to last hundreds of passes. I launch from between 5000 to 7200 rpm’s. I shift at 7000 rpm.

Original dyno spec 156 BHP@6,000 RPM (torque 148 ft. lbs. at 5,250 RPM); upgrades in carbs (from 44 IDF to 48IDF) and ignition (from points/condenser to Petronix and CD) since have probably improved BHP to 165/170. Lots of low end torque, idles smoothly at 900 RPM, pulls very strong to 5,000 RPM (not yet broken in) and made power to 7,000 RPM on the dyno. Accelleration is excellent with the close ratio 901 5-speed. Gas mileage around 20 mpg with current jetting. Welded/balanced Berg fan will allow switching to Porsche 356 generator/alternator pulley (and shorter fan belt) for higher fan output at lower RPM if necessary during summer months. Berg pressure relief oil pump cover to full-flow, spin-on oil-filter. Engine has all stock tin with operative thermostat and flaps.

The car is fun to drive on the street. Gas is pricy though, no where on the street can you use all the HP safley its just knowing that its there that makes it fun. freeway driving is miserable 45mph at 4500 rpm but drop that thing in 3rd and nail it 100 mph right now at 7500. Is not for the beginner or novice lots of maintenance but is very dependable the motor has roughly 800 miles on it, the heads are always kept fresh , this is our 3rd season without splitting the case or any engine failure but 3 broken transmissions. I have no overheating problems and if it had not turned into a race only this year, I would not be afraid to drive it to the local events. the goal is to have an mid 11 sec naturally aspirated street car, so keeping the motor and trans fresh as possible is the reason for not driving it much as we used too plus the tickets are expensive now days. I have had this car since 1982.

Lets say this: "I have less into this motor than many people have into their heads!"

This motor is very torquey! It may not scream down the 1/4 mile, but it can pull a house! It will pull from 1500rpm without a complaint. After the head work this winter, I expect the HP to jump to 170 but still be found under 5200rpm. The only complaint about the set up is the piece of crap pulley i have right now...mic'd out under spec and allows a fine mist when revved.
