Message from the chair:
Mrs Moira Strauss
Dear Readers,
Welcome to our rather late winter, the
most misunderstood season of all. For
many winter marks the beginning of a
long wait, yet it is not without its
beauty. For me, winter often serves
up a wellspring of precious childhood
memories packed with hours of
sledding and big mugs of
marshmallow- and whipped-cream-
topped hot chocolate. What can you
remember? How about a few
magnificent snow days spent playing
outdoors?
Take your dog for a walk and visit the
Saturday morning market. Get a nice
hot cup of coffee and something to eat
and see what's new.
Koop solank jou kaartjie vir die
Droom Projek langarm dans wat op
die 31ste Augustus sal plaasvind.
Bring jou eie vleis en slaai en kom
braai lekker saam. Vure sal verskaf
word. Kry jou kaartjie by die
Toerisme kantoor vir slegs R20 per
persoon.
wees.
Geniet hierdie week se uitgawe.

Get that job workshops We want to thank Eden DM, Absa Bank and Francois Ferreira Academy for presenting this training free of charge and we would like to congratulate all the participants who successfully completed the training. "Art on Track" arts and crafts exhibitions, displays and demonstrations Enquiries: Mike 0832854751 / Penny 0828714611 www.calitzdorp.net
Well done to the Arts Committee of Calitzdorp. What a fabulous and inspirational weekend we had. The Arts Committee of
Calitzdorp presented "Arst on Track" as an extension to the established "Arts Route 62" gallery meander. The showcase included an
array of arts and crafts exhibitions, displays and demonstrations from local and South African guest artists.
Feedback from the 2013 Arts on Track (9-11 August 2013)
As this was the first time we as an arts community where hosting a function of this type, there was uncertainty, nerves and masses of nervous energy, especially only giving ourselves 6 weeks to prepare and a very small budget (pretty close to zero).
However, as with all things help arrives from many sources, some expected and some not so expected.
With all hands on deck, we believe that the Arts Committee of Calitzdorp (ACC), managed to pull of miracle, and the result was a successful exhibition.
Friday was a great day with Blackie Badenhorst giving a talk on the Women of Olifantsfontein, followed by the opening by Hannes Visser (Editor of the Oudshoorn Courant) and a well attended ceramics workshop by Clementina van der Walt. We are not sure how much Port was drunk (or made - as Boplaas was in full attendance!). Marie Janse van Rensburg Nel was also there to chat to folks about her book, as was Mimi and her girls from the Groenfontein Toy Project. All in all a great womens day tribute.
Saturday was a another great day, with an oil painting workshop by Doris Brand, and demonstrations by Trevor Rizzato (Ceramics) and Tessa Horan (Felting). Also on site to chat to visitors was Apolis Beginsel, Nico Masemula, William Ralarala, Hendrick Tiemie, Braam Coetzee, Esbie Grabie and Blackie Badenhorst. During the afternoon, Dr Noel-Jean gave an organ recital featuring pop pieces at the NG Church.
Sunday another great day, with a lunch time potjiekos.
The results of the exhibition:
- around 1000 visitors estimated
- in excess of R20 000 worth of arts and crafts sold (43 articles left Calitzdorp!)
- Selling artists - Esbie Grabie, Apolis Beginsel, Braam Coetzee, Amri Pretorius, Anton Smit, Hendrik Tiemie, Marie Nel, Groenfontein Toy Project, Michael van Rooyen, Graham Bolland, Van Wessels and from her gallery Clementina van der Walt. Also selling was our very own poet Okie Calitz.
The ACC would like to thank:
Kannaland Municipality (Calitzdorp), for all their assistance with banners and lighting.

Saterdagoggendmark
Judy

Brain Teaser of the week
You must buy 100 chickens for exactly R100, and purchase at
least one chicken from each store. The first store charges 5
cents/chicken, the second charges R1/chicken and the third
charges R5/chicken. How many chickens should you buy from
each store?
The solution to this teaser will be in next weeks news letter.

The solution to last weeks teaser: Answer:
Place 1 white marble in one bowl, and place the rest of the
marbles in the other bowl (49 whites, and 50 blacks).
This way you begin with a 50/50 chance of choosing the bowl
with one white marble and living. Even if you choose the other
bowl, you still have an almost 50% chance of picking one of
the 49 white marbles. There are no guarantees in life, but this is
your best bet at surviving.

Famous quotes
Quote:
You have enemies? Good. That means you've stood up for something, sometime in your life.
Winston Churchill
Who is Winston Churchill
Sir Winston Leonard Spencer-Churchill, (30 November 1874 – 24 January
1965) was a British politician who was Prime Minister of the United
Kingdom from 1940 to 1945 (that is, for most of the Second World War) and
again from 1951 to 1955. Widely regarded as one of the greatest wartime
leaders of the 20th century, Churchill was also an officer in the British Army, a
historian, a writer, and an artist. He is the only British Prime Minister to have
received the Nobel Prize in Literature, and was also the first person to be made
anhonorary citizen of the United States.
Churchill was born into an aristocratic family as the grandson of the 7th Duke of
Marlborough. His father, Lord Randolph Churchill, was a charismatic politician
who served as Chancellor of the Exchequer; his mother, Jennie Jerome, was an
American socialite. As a young army officer, he saw action in British India, The
Sudan, and the Second Boer War. He gained fame as a war correspondent and
wrote books about his campaigns.
At the forefront of politics for fifty years, he held many political and cabinet
positions. Before the First World War, he served as President of the Board of
Trade, Home Secretary, and First Lord of the Admiralty as part of
the Asquith Liberal government. During the war, he continued as First Lord of
the Admiralty until the disastrous Gallipoli Campaign caused his departure from
government. He then briefly resumed active army service on the Western
Front as commander of the 6th Battalion of the Royal Scots Fusiliers. He
returned to government as Minister of Munitions, Secretary of State for War,
and Secretary of State for Air. After the War, Churchill served as Chancellor of
the Exchequer in the Conservative (Baldwin) government of 1924–29,
controversially returning the pound sterling in 1925 to the gold standard at its
pre-war parity, a move widely seen as creating deflationary pressure on the UK
economy. Also controversial were his opposition to increased home rule for
India and his resistance to the 1936 abdication of Edward VIII.
Out of office and politically "in the wilderness" during the 1930s, Churchill took the lead in warning about Nazi Germany and in
campaigning for rearmament. On the outbreak of the Second World War, he was again appointed First Lord of the Admiralty.
Following the resignation of Neville Chamberlain on 10 May 1940, Churchill became Prime Minister. His steadfast refusal to
consider defeat, surrender, or a compromise peace helped inspire British resistance, especially during the difficult early days of the
War when Britain stood alone among European countries in its active opposition to Adolf Hitler. Churchill was particularly noted for
his speeches and radio broadcasts, which helped inspire the British people. He led Britain as Prime Minister until victory over Nazi
Germany had been secured.
After the Conservative Party lost the 1945 election, he became Leader of the Opposition to the Labour (Attlee) government. After
winning the 1951 election, he again became Prime Minister, before retiring in 1955. Upon his death, Elizabeth IIgranted him the
honour of a state funeral, which saw one of the largest assemblies of world statesmen in history.[1]
Named the Greatest Briton of all
time in a 2002 poll, Churchill is widely regarded as being among the most influential people in British history, consistently ranking
well in opinion polls of Prime Ministers of the United Kingdom.
Birds of the Klein Karoo
BIRD OF THE WEEK
Birds spotted at Redstone Hills and
environs.
Names as used in Sasol – The Larger
Illustrated Guide to Birds of Southern
Africa: 2nd
edition 2005.
ID: 76
Species:
Black-crowned Night-Heron Spotted:
Recorded November, visitor.
Black-crowned Night-Heron
Description
Adults are approximately 64 cm (25 in) long and weigh 800 g (28 oz). They have a black crown and back with the remainder of the
body white or grey, red eyes, and short yellow legs. They have pale grey wings and white under parts. Two or three long white
plumes, erected in greeting and courtship displays, extend from the back of the head. The sexes are similar in appearance although
the males are slightly larger. Black-crowned Night Herons do not fit the typical body form of the heron family. They are relatively
stocky with shorter bills, legs, and necks than their more familiar cousins, the egrets and "day" herons. Their resting posture is
normally somewhat hunched but when hunting they extend their necks and look more like other wading birds.
Immature birds have dull grey-brown plumage on their heads, wings, and backs, with numerous pale spots. Their underparts are
paler and streaked with brown. The young birds have orange eyes and duller yellowish-green legs. They are very noisy birds in their
nesting colonies, with calls that are commonly transcribed as quok or woc, woc.
Distribution
The breeding habitat is fresh and salt-water wetlands throughout much of the world. The subspecies N. n. hoactli breeds
in Northand South America from Canada as far south as northern Argentina and Chile, N. n. obscurus in southernmost South
America, N. n. falklandicus in the Falkland Islands, and the nominate race N. n. nycticorax in Europe, Asia and Africa. Black-crowned
Night Herons nest in colonies on platforms of sticks in a group of trees, or on the ground in protected locations such as islands or
reedbeds. Three to eight eggs are laid.
This heron is migratory in the northernmost part of its range, but otherwise resident (even in the cold Patagonia). The North American
population winters in Mexico, the southern United States, Central America, and the West Indies, and the Old World birds winter in
tropical Africa and southern Asia.
Behaviour
These birds stand still at the water's edge and wait to ambush prey, mainly at night or early morning. They primarily eat
small fish, crustaceans, frogs, aquatic insects, smallmammals and small birds. During the day they rest in trees or bushes. N. n.
hoactli is more gregarious outside the breeding season than the nominate race.
Etymology
The scientific name, Nycticorax, means "night raven", and refers to this species' nocturnal habits and harsh crow-like call.
In the Falkland Islands, the bird is called "quark", which is an onomatopoeia similar to its name in many other languages, like "kwak"
in Dutch and Frisian, "kvakoš noční" in Czech, "квак" in Ukrainian, "кваква" inRussian, "Vạc" in Vietnamese, "Kowak-malam"
in Indonesian, and "Waqwa" in Quechua.
Droom projek
Are there any individuals or groups who would like to take over the running
of the DREAM PROJECT ? The Calitzdorp Tourism Committee, with the help of various like-minded persons, has been running the Dream Project for just over a
year, adding new features as they have been requested. This project initiated by Retief van der Walt and Moira Strauss, was not
undertaken for any status or income, but something various community/committee members did together in their spare time for the
sole benefit of the town and it's people. The committee would like to concentrate on other important initiatives and therefore request
either a strongly motivated individual / group with fresh new ideas and strong managment skills to take over or manage the
project on their behalf. The Tourism committee will assist where and when they are needed, of course. If you are interested please
contact Erina or Jade, as soon as possible- thank you ! Erina / Jadé, 044 213 3775
