PassageAs heat disease continues to be the numberone killer in the United States, researchershave become increasingly interested in iden-tifying the potential risk factors that triggerheart attacks. High-fat diets and life in thefast lane have long been known to contributeto the high incidence of heart failure. Butaccording to new studies, the list of risk fac-tors may be significantly longer and quite sur-prising. Heart failure, e.g., appears to haveseasonal and temporal patterns. A higher per-centage of heart attacks occurs in coldweather and more people experience heartfailure on Monday than on any other day ofthe week. In addition, people are more sus-ceptible to heart attacks in the first few hoursafter waking. Cardiologists first observed thismorning phenomenon in the mid-1980 andhave since discovered a number of possiblecauses. An early-morning rise in blood pres-sure, heart rate and concentration of heartstimulating hormones, plus a reduction of bloodflow to the heart, may all contribute to thehigher incidence of heart attacks between thehours of 8.00 am and 10.00 am, In other stud-ies, both birthday and bachelorhood have beenimplicated as risk factors. Statistics reveal thatheart attach rate increases sgnificantly forboth females and males in the few daysimmediaterly preceding and following theirbirthdays. And unmarried men are more atrisk for heart attacks than their married coun-terparts. Though, stress is thought to be linkedin some way to all of the aforementioned riskfactors, intense research continues in the hopeof future comprehending why and how heartfailure is triggered.
