Spirit and Truth “True Miracle”

My dear parishioners, our loving heavenly father says, “Behold, I make all things new.” [Rev 21:5] Our true des-tiny is life, eternal life, and our God is a God of the living not God of the dead. In this life, we pray: “To have the eyes of our hearts enlightened, that we may know what is the hope to which Christ has called us, to know the riches of his glorious inheritance in the saints.” [Eph 1:18] I believe anyone who is spiritually perceptive, who realizes that there are other ways to see than by mere human eyesight, understands that angels and saints of heaven can see everything in heaven and on earth as God wills. The angels and the heavenly elect may behold everything in the realms of both time and eternity because they are perfect. The heavenly angels and saints are not in a “happy hunting ground” or “round-up corral” somewhere. They are much, much closer to us than we can imagine. The angels and saints and all of heaven, in truth, are as near as one’s out-stretched hand. Yet we mortals typically cannot see heaven. Our eyes of faith are weak, and our souls are not yet perfected: “Eye has not seen, ear has not heard, nor has it yet dawned on man what God has in store for those who love him.” [1Cor 2:9] Surely miracles are not thrown down to us here on earth from way up “there”. We speak of miracles which have the power to change who we are, what we do, and who we are meant to become. When God permits us to see great and beautiful things—even for a moment—we will never forget. We are humbled to be so privileged. We want to share the “Good News” of our miraculous experi-ence and awareness of God. We want to hold on to the miracle in our lives—we don’t want to let go. In an instant, we comprehend how our world is so flawed and …(cont. on page 8)

Welcome to our Visitors

We welcome you to our parish. If you would like to become a member please fill out a registration form located on the counter or visit our website: ww.stphiliphuffmantx.org.

Sunday Mass at The Overlook

We are grateful to The Overlook and Kevin Kilgore for allowing us to have Sunday and Holy Day Mass-es at their beautiful facility. It has allowed us to gather as one family in Christ.

When scheduling events we encourage our parish-ioners to use The Overlook and refer others to this wonderful facility.

Sunday, November 19th, Mass at 8:00 am!

Thank you!

We wish to thank all of our parishioners for their time, treasure, and talent. Many of you donated time through prayer or work up at the parish. Every rosary, every Hail Mary, every thought means so much to us! We have received donations from churches and indi-viduals throughout the country. The kindness we have received has touched our hearts and we are very grateful. We have a long way to go and our finances are tight for the rebuilding of our beloved parish. All gifts are truly appreciated!

Book of the Names of the Dead

We will have our Remembrance Book of the Names of the Dead during the month of Novem-ber. It will be placed on the table at the back of the room where we celebrate Mass. Before and after Mass you may enter in it your loved ones names as a way of remembrance. It’s a wonderful tradition in our Catholic Church as we honor those we love and miss.

Please note that on Sunday, November 19th, we will have Mass at 8:00 am due to another event scheduled at the Overlook.

Online Giving

We now have the convenience of online giving on both our website and parish app. Take a look and see if this will help with your Sunday Tithes, Gifts, and Hurricane Restoration donations.

SAVE THE DATE SATURDAY, NOVEMBER 18 MOVIE DAY

Sunday Nov. 19: CCE from 9:30 – 10:30 am Wednesday Nov. 22: No CCE, Thanksgiving Break Sunday November 26: No CCE, Thanksgiving Break

Dear St. Philip’s family, Do you ever wish you could shake some sense into someone? Or make them see what is in front of them they are missing? Such is the life of anyone who deals with teenag-ers. There is a frustrating joy in

teaching kids who think they are invincible and know almost everything there is to know about life. The wonder and joy comes when they have those 0h-so-seldom-ah-ha moments.

Our Confirmandi are mostly delightful, kind and gen-erous. There are times in class when they are snob-by and cruel to each other. They are trying to find their way into adulthood and stumble and bruise just like the rest of us. The negative behavior is nev-er overt. It is done with the youthful selfishness that accompanies this age group. We can all think back to our high school years and wish we knew then what we know now. That is the benefit of age and wisdom. These young adults will do the same thing in 30 years or so. That is the true gift of teaching high school kids.

I’ve had many parishioners comment that they could never teach high school kids. They would rather (insert whatever torture you can think of) do any-thing else. Not me! I enjoy these young adults with all of their quirks and drama. They are navigating life with all of the dangers and temptations the devil can throw at them. This is the time for them to have a good solid foundation in their faith and to know Je-sus loves them. That is the lesson of Confirmation. Go forth and spread the Good News!

We are learning about the seven Sacraments of our Catholic faith now. Not just the surface stuff. We are delving into the meat and potatoes of our faith. Baptism, Confirmation and Holy Eucharist are the “initiation Sacraments”. These we will study in depth.

Please continue to pray for our Confirmandi, teach-ing team and youth mentors as we journey to the Sacrament of Confirmation.

Sincerely in the Hearts of Jesus and Mary, Lynette Zaunbrecher, Confirmation Coordinator

First Sacrament Parents, Our First Sacraments Retreat/Parent Meeting event has been announced for weeks in various forms, and it is finally here! Parents and children are required to attend today's (Nov 5) First Sacraments retreat & meeting this afternoon at 4:00 pm at Atascocita Unit-ed Methodist Church Weekday Learning/Life Center. Please arrive at least five minutes prior; we will begin promptly at 4 pm. We look forward to seeing you.

My name is Mary Canavan. I am the co-catechist for First Sacraments with Diane Sparks. This is my third year, teaching First Sacraments. Before I had my son 5 years ago, I also taught 1st grade CCE at St. Philip's for two years.

My husband of 17 years, and I have five beautiful children. I have attended St. Philip's for 36 years. The first 19 years with my parents, and the remaining years with my own family. I, myself, went through this same CCE program here at St Philip when I was a child. I currently work as a first-grade teacher with Humble ISD; I have been teaching for 8 years in the public-school system. I am so excited to come full circle and teach what I have learned over the years.

Wednesday CCE Update Good-Bye to Debra Burgower

St. Philip Youth Receive Generous Donation

After two weeks of being out of our regular class-rooms at AUMC, it was nice to be back on a more normal class schedule. As we always do, after class, we gathered in the common area to pray together. Instead of our usual rosary, this week we prayed the Divine Mercy Chaplet. In 1931, Jesus gave St. Faustina, the Apostle of Mercy, an image of himself. He instructed her to “Paint an image according to the pattern you see, with the signature: Jesus, I trust in You. I promise that the soul that will venerate this image will not perish. I also promise victory over [its] enemies already here on earth, especially at the hour of death. I Myself will defend it as My own glory (Diary, 47, 48). Jesus, I trust in You. After our youth night last week in which the youth were challenged to place their trust fully in Christ and give their lives over to His Holy will, the Chaplet seemed a fitting closing prayer for us this week. After the Chaplet, we had to say good-bye to long-time catechist, Debra Burgower. This was her final day with us before she and husband Duffy moved to their new home. Debra has taught almost all of the 82 youth on Wednesday night at some time in their CCE journey either in 2nd grade as a co-catechist for First Sacrament Prep, in 5th grade, Confirmation or for the last several years, as our 6th grade lead catechist. We had cake to celebrate her service to CCE and to send her off with our full hopes for a happy fu-ture in Missouri. She will be missed.

A Big Thank You to the youth of The Church of the Holy Eucharist. The youth at the Church of The Holy Eu-charist in Tabernacle, New Jersey under the leadership of their youth ministry coordi-nator, Jeff Siedlecki, raised over $2000 for our St. Philip youth at a special event held two weeks ago. Jeff phoned Randy Adams,

the Associate Youth Director for Galveston-Houston, to ask how they could help after Hurricane Harvey. The kids at Holy Eucharist wanted to directly help the youth of a specific parish impacted by the storm. Randy sent him our way. Holy Eucharist’s youth group held a ‘Carry the Cross-a-thon’. For a full day, their youth gathered at their par-ish to take one hour shifts holding the cross. Games, music, movies, and more were enjoyed throughout the day, while three youth at a time held the cross aloft. The youth collected pledges from family and friends to sponsor them for their hour. At 15 minutes before the hour, every hour, all participants gathered in front of the cross for prayer. On the new hour, the cross was passed to the next 3 youth committed to lifting up the cross. All proceeds from the event have been given to St. Philip for the direct benefit of those youth impact-ed most severely by the storm. For these youth, all CCE tuition, retreat fees and youth outing expenses including next summer’s Archdiocesan Youth Confer-ence, have been covered by this generous donation. The witness of God’s love, mercy and protection for us in the aftermath of Harvey continues to be seen in the acts of kindness and love such as this one. We thank Jeff Siedlecki and the youth of Holy Eucharist for being Christ’s hands and feet for us in our time of need. “We know that all things work for good for those who love God, who are called according to his purpose.” Romans 8:28

Little Parishioner Playgroup

The St. Philip's Little Parishioners Playgroup couldn't be more excited to have found a tempo-rary home at AUMC. Their generosity has allowed us to meet in their Youth Group room, complete with comfy couches for moms and dads, and a nice rug for the kiddos. This year's theme is "God is Love." We are learn-ing all about the ways God shows us his love and how we can love him in return. We would love for you to join us! Our revised fall schedule dates are: November 12th, November 26th, December 3rd December 10th If you have any questions please email me at [email protected]. Sincerely In Christ, Katie Smith

Harvey Relief Special Event at the Houston Food Bank. Our high school youth will be volunteering at the Food Bank on Saturday, Nov. 18 from 8:00am – 12:00pm. We will meet at the Shipley’s Donuts, 7211 Atascocita Road, Humble, TX 77346 at 7:00am. After our shift, we will stop for lunch at Whataburger on the way home. Bring about $10 for your lunch. Proper attire must be worn: appropriate t-shirts, jeans or other pants and closed toe shoes are required. Please sign up for this event by emailing Ms. Becky at [email protected] or putting your name on the sign-up sheet at CCE. We need one or two Virtus-trained adults to come as chaperones/drivers. Please contact Becky if you are able to help.

Since St. Philip is unable to sponsor a food drive this year, we encourage you to drop by the Huffman Food Pantry with your food and financial donations for those who may not be able to have a Happy Thanks-giving due to Hurricane Harvey or other circumstanc-es. The Huffman Food Pantry is located at 25503 FM 2100 on the campus of the First Baptist Church. They are open on Tuesdays and Thursdays between 9-12 noon. For several weeks after the storm they operated a re-lief center for anyone who was flooded in Huffman. They provided shelter, hot meals, showers, clothing and shelter for horses and pets. Please show your ap-preciation for their humanitarian efforts by helping to restock the Pantry.

Grief Ministry “Saying Good-Bye”

Adult Bible Study

Intercession: May we help each other on our earthly pilgrimage to heaven. Prayers: Our Father, 3 Hail Marys, Glory Be Reflection: The annu-al observances of All Saints Day (November 1) and All Souls Day (November 2) remind

us that "death is not the end, but rather the door through which we must pass to gain eternal life." We are called to journey together on our pilgrimage to heaven, and we can take steps now to deepen our understanding of the transition from this life to the next and prepare for it. For example, let's encourage each another in regular prayer and reception of the sacraments, especially Confession and the Eucharist; these give us "grace to live in ever-deeper communion with God and with one another." It is also important to learn about the dignity of human life and applicable principles for medical care, so we can make decisions about end-of-life care that respect God's gift of life. And, knowing "our prayers can help those who are being purified in Purgatory," let us pray especially this month for those who have gone before us. *(Excerpts are from "Catholic Considerations for Our Earthly Passing.") Acts of Reparation (choose one): Praying for the living and the dead is a spiritual work of mercy. Pray a decade of the Rosary today for someone you know who is nearing death or who has passed away. Visiting those who are sick is one of the corporal works of mercy. Set a time this month to visit some-one who is ill. Your local church may be able connect you with a parishioner who would welcome a visit. November is celebrated in the United States as Black Catholic History Month. Learn about one of the fol-lowing candidates for sainthood: Venerable Henriette Delille; Venerable Pierre Toussaint; Servant of God, Mother Mary Lange; and Servant of God, Father Au-gustus Tolton. Focus this week on practicing one of the virtues he or she exemplified.

We will spend the next sessions studying “Beginning Apologetics—How to Explain and Defend the Catho-lic Faith”. We will be meeting on Monday’s at the May Center in Huffman at 6:00 pm. Nov 6, The Eucharist Dec 4, Mary Nov 13, The Papacy Dec 11, Purgatory If you have not attended any of our sessions, please feel free to join us. For more information, contact Ray & Deb Kessler at 832-644-8078 or email to [email protected]. All are welcome!

There are many ways to say good-bye when you have lost a loved one. Say-ing good-bye is not a one-time thing. Like grief, it is a process with many different facets. Saying goodbye occurs gradually over time. As you go on with the things you must do, take time to do one thing that you used to do together-a fa-vorite restaurant, a favorite walk, a favorite radio or television program. It is not unusual to feel a little guilty enjoying something you used to do together. Use these times, however, to remember that your loved one would want you to go on despite your grief. Remember that God is with you at these times. Your hope lies in God. “Yet, this I call to mind and therefore I have hope: Because of the Lord’s great love we are not consumed, for his com-passions never fail. They are new every morning: great is your faithfulness” (Lamentations 3:12-23). Join us on November 16 at 4:00pm, 27530 Golf View Lane, Huffman at the home of Dr. Lane Coco, 713-208-5520.

God, our Father, we thank You for the gift of love and the gift of life. We thank you for the gift of our children. We ask You to send Your holy angels to protect and guide them each day so that they will walk the narrow path of purity, self-control and obedience, as was taught to us by Your own Son, Jesus Christ. We ask this through Jesus Christ our Lord, in union with the Holy Spirit. Amen.

BE OPEN TO CORRECTIONS AND LISTEN TO THE ADVICE OF LITTLE ONES Littleness will teach you to accept your mistakes and those who assist you to remedy them. • Intelligent people are often humble and re-

spond graciously to corrections. • Little ones seldom offer advice—earn their con-

fidence by humbling yourself and becoming one of them.

• Little ones practice the lesson they preach. • Little ones feel lifted and invigorated to serve

the Lord in holiness and peace.

Spirit and Truth (from page 1)

… broken by sin and rebellion, and how very much we need God. I believe the great miracle of faith is not so much the wonderful and miraculous “thing” that appears before our eyes of sight to be unique and unrepeatable. Actually, miracles occur when our eyes of faith and our human eyesight converge for a few moments—a short while—and we see heaven and earth come to-gether. Our perceptions become extraordinary, and we are able to see things, and into things, and know things that are truly beyond ordinary human powers. “The true miracle is that which takes place in one’s own self, when my eyes are open for a time—however long God may will—and I am able to glimpse for a moment at least, what surrounds me always!” [Willa Cather] You see, God’s heaven is here! His heaven is as close as my outstretched hand! God in his heaven is a like a mother hen--remembering the thought of Our Lord—who gathers her chicks under her wings to shelter them, to protect them, to comfort them and to provide them a peaceful respite in a broken world. Take your hand now, if you dare, and pass it through the air above you in this holy place, and your hand will pass through ten thousands of angels whom God has sent to join us in this Holy Sacrifice of the Mass. They did not fly across the universe to reach us. No, they are already here. They surround us always, be-cause heaven surrounds us always. Take heart! We are very much loved by God, Mary Queen of Heaven, the angels and saints! We are not alone. Sincerely in the hearts of Jesus and Mary. Your pastor, Reverend Richard Barker.

When you receive Communion during the Holy Sacrifice of the Mass, it is the Body, Blood, Soul and Divinity of Christ that you are receiving. Holy Communion, in the Catholic Church, is reserved for those who have received the sacrament of First Holy Communion, have been catechized (taught) in our Catholic faith and have made a profession of faith. One should abstain from Holy Communion if they are in mortal sin and have not received the sacrament of reconciliation. If you are not Roman Catholic or are in need of the Sacrament of Reconciliation, we ask that you refrain from receiving Holy Communion in the Mass. However, you may go up to one of the ministers for a blessing when Holy Communion is being offered. By crossing your hands over your heart, the Priest or Eucharistic minister will know to give you the blessing.

Also, if you choose to receive only the Blessed Sacrament and not from the Chalice, it is fitting nevertheless to pause for a mo-ment to honor Christ’s pres-ence in the Precious Blood—with an appropriate sign of de-votion. We would not think to pass a friend on the street with-out some acknowledgement. Our Lord Jesus Christ deserves no less, and most assuredly, a great deal more.
