Does the day revolve around when the family dog takes me

for a walk? You betcha. Winter is more problem-atic because the day-light hours are shorter but there will be a troop of like-minded dog owners rushing to the dog parks before 5pm – having organised their working day to find the time for “pooch hour”.

It’s an unofficial club at the top of Henley park, where mostly the only names you know are those of the dogs

leveller. The most heated topic discussed would be the weather –as it would be, because having decent weather to get to the park is a necessity.

The unstated under-standing is to pick up the ‘you know what’ and aggressive dogs go elsewhere into fenced off-leash areas, so that’s not a problem. You can arrive at a frantic pace, tense from a hard day’s work and 45 minutes later, leave with a smile and a sense of calm. Certainly all the pooches are happy little vegemites.

There’s a sense of

community, a shared inter-est and genuine care, such as when we heard that luna, a young Weimaraner, had been killed on Georges River Road at belfield. our pets are part of the family, their company and unreserved delight to be in your company has been proven to be beneficial to our mental health and their absence or pain cuts deeply.

Inner West Neighbour Aid provides and excellent service for elderly people, or those confined to their homes who have a dog and find it difficult to provide

all the exercise it needs. Neighbour Aid has devel-oped a volunteer based program to provide basic assistance, like dog-walking and grooming, to owners of existing pets who have difficulty providing care themselves. Another program, senior pets for senior people, is designed to match older people with mature pets from the animal shelter for compan-ionship, which eligible participants can apply for under the HACCs program. and everyone is happy to be there. up bounds molly, Ringo, lucy, Dora, max, Robbie, Charlie – to name a few, as they say hello, chase balls and each other. The days of Rex and Rufus as dog names are well gone.

The bonhomie between the owners as we gather to discuss the latest cute and clever canine behaviour begins and thirty minutes of sanity prevails for local people from all walks of life. The dog park is a great

ArePorT on the let’s Play Capital Works Program tabled at the June 5 Canada bay

City council meeting has stated that russell Park, Drummoyne Park and majors bay reserve, which were identified as a high priority to be upgraded between 2008 and 2011, have now been determined by council to be in “good condition” and do not “need to be replaced”, despite the scheduled upgrades not going ahead as planned.

In December 2007, the let’s Play strategy had identified 23 parks as high priority to be fixed by 2011. only 12 have been completed.

Pictures taken last week at russell Park (right) reveal a damaged seat, holes in a climbing gym and broken swing chain coverings. The majors bay reserve equipment is rusty and has chipped paint, whilst Drummoyne Park shows timber cracks in the support for the flying fox, poles rusted at the base, broken seats and more.

Canada bay Council says that inspections are carried out by a contractor.

“regular inspections are undertaken by an independent contractor to verify the safety and condition of all playground equipment in the City of Canada bay,” a council spokesperson said.

mayor Angelo Tsirekas says the let’s Play strategy is a good news story. “Canada bay has over 120 parks, with 16% of our land being open space. There is a great deal of work we are doing for our community to provide quality playgrounds. We have a regime of quarterly inspections that has been adopted over the last 12 months,” mayor Tsirekas said.

Asked if he had confidence in the inspections the contractors carry out the mayor said,” I don’t have a reason not to be.”

Five Dock’s natalie Haddad spearheaded a push to retain and maintain safe play park equipment in march 2007 when she discovered that her neighbourhood park, Croker reserve, was to have equipment removed.

“In march 2007, all the equipment in Croker reserve was broken, which I brought to council’s attention. That’s when I found out that Canada bay Council had intended to remove the equipment from our local park and 21 others,” natalie said. “by December 2007 after many petitions, letters and community group meetings the decision to remove the equipment was overturned by council and the let’s Play strategy was adopted.”

Croker Park was subsequently upgraded with all new equipment.

At a council meeting last

week, natalie requested that the councillors reject the let’s Play report from Council staff to not upgrade these playgrounds as promised.

“They [the playgrounds], have missed the 2008-2011 timeframe. They should be upgraded within the next 12 months. Two of the parks are 26 years old and six are 17 years old,” she told the meeting.”since the time that these playgrounds were installed, the Australian standards relating to

“no amount of maintenance can bring these playgrounds up to a level of safety consistent with the current Australian standards or with the community’s expectations of today.”

“I have shown great interest in playgrounds within the City of Canada bay for the last 5 years. safety of our children who use all of the playgrounds throughout the City of Canada bay will always be paramount to me,” natalie said.

“For me, now with two young sons, it is extremely important to see the project fulfilled,” she said later.

LaSt SuNDay, I was proud to see so many Burwood locals turn out

to honour australia’s National Servicemen despite the inclement weather.

a strong contingent of ex-National Servicemen – or Nashos as they are known – children, residents and visitors braved the wet and wild weather, gathering in Burwood Park to pay homage to the heroic australians who risked their lives and endured great hardships.

as Mayor of Burwood and Chairman of the Burwood and District Sub-Branch of the National Servicemen’s association Memorial Committee, I felt the ceremony demonstrated the deep gratitude for service rendered to australia by our

Nashos. Men who fought and died and altered the course of their lives for the betterment of the nation.

I would like to thank the National Servicemen’s Committee for their tireless efforts in ensuring that future generations appreciate the valiant heroics displayed by our National Servicemen.

CroyDon Stationas many in our community know, Croydon Station lacks adequate access for people who find it difficult or impossible to climb stairs. after reviewing the site with Council staff, as Mayor of Burwood, I can assure the community and users of Croydon Station that I will be pressuring the State Government for assistance to install a lift at the station to

provide easier access.Further, after receiving feedback from local residents on the matter, I will be writing to the management of Croydon Station to request longer opening hours of the public toilets there. as a high-traffic station, public transport users should be

afforded the courtesy of public facilities to make their commute more pleasant.Burwood Council is committed to working with you. If you have any matters you wish to discuss, don’t hesitate to contact my office on 9911 9916 to arrange a meeting.

sTrATHFIelD ses, council rangers and park staff are out in the cold after a fire ripped through and destroyed the main two-storey building at the strathfield Council depot on Weeroona road last saturday night.

The fire is believed to have started at about 7pm and is the second time that the strathfield ses has lost their headquarters and equipment. Police and the fire brigade have cordoned off the depot and are treating the fire suspiciously. no-one was injured in the blaze that also destroyed Council equipment.

ses Deputy local Controller, Joanne Gianotto says that their unit is understandably upset. For the 27 member team, which had three new recruits last week, another fire is devastating.

“I was alerted to the fire about two hours after it had started,” said ms Gianotto. “The building has been destroyed and we have lost our home for the second time. most of our training equipment is gone, plus all the computers and electronic gear. our Controller, Darrin Parkin is very upset.”

“Thankfully both our vehicles were off-site

and the chainsaws were in a different room. Investigations into the fire are now underway,” she advised.

mayor of strathfield Paul barron said, while it was still early days, Council was working on a plan to temporarily relocate Council staff and the ses.

“We’re obviously all in shock after the fire, but I’m just glad nobody was hurt,” he said. “We’re currently working on a plan to temporarily relocate Council staff to one of our other facilities and ensure that Council’s services are in no way affected despite the fire.”

Cr barron also said Council would work with the ses regarding relocating their headquarters. He said though unfinished, the ses may be able to locate to their new purpose built facility, which is also located at the depot site.

“We’ll obviously work closely with the ses regarding temporary relocation and though unfinished, one option may be to relocate the ses to their new building, but we’ll have to see what needs to be done in order to get that up and running.”

A sTronG crowd turned out to burwood’s national servicemen’s Commemorative service this month despite inclement weather.

Former national servicemen, children, residents and visitors gathered in burwood Park to pay homage to the heroic Australians who risked their lives and endured great hardships.

burwood mayor John Faker said the ceremony demonstrated

the deep gratitude for the service rendered to the country by the national servicemen who fought and died and altered the course of their lives for the nation.

“I would like to thank the national servicemen’s Committee for their tireless efforts in ensuring that future generations appreciate the valiant heroics displayed by our national servicemen,” Cr Faker said.

National Servicemen still remembered

“WHy do we love dogs so much? Is it because they are loyal and loving? Is it because they love us for what we are, without judgement? How can it be that in a world of so much human tragedy, so many momentous and terrible changes, we shed tears over the death of a little white dog? Is it because, as byron said, our dogs have all the virtues of man, without his vices?”

malcolm Turnbull mP wrote this heartfelt message on his website when his beloved old

dog, mellie, died in December. These words now mark the hallway of sydney’s Animal referral Hospital in Homebush as a dedication to the centre’s new high field magnetic resonance Imaging (mrI) machine to a little white dog mr Turnbull will never forget.

mr Turnbull and his wife lucy autographed the wall during the may 25 launch of the mrI at the hospital saying, “Congratulations to the ArH for the great work. It’s a measure of our humanity

how much we care for animals that can’t look after themselves.”

The high field mrI enables detailed examination of internal structures to diagnose conditions that would be impossible to confirm without invasive surgery.

“A high field mrI allows us to capture much clearer and more extensive images during a shorter, safer anaesthetic compared to a low field mrI. We can scan the entire spine of a large dog rapidly and then focus in on areas of interest to determine where a surgery is required to restore a paralysed patient’s ability to walk,” ArH director Dr David simpson said.

The mrI is accessible 24/7 to ArH patients and other veterinary hospitals in the sydney area as referrals.

IT’s A FrIDAy morning and rochester street is buzzing.

This will be no surprise to anyone who lives in Homebush, but to a city dweller like myself, this suburb seems like the last place that diners would flock for breakfast. There are many reasons, however, why this is not the case and – to my mind – the most obvious is that nowhere else in Australia have I ever seen milkshakes for only two dollars.

In fact, I was walking down burwood road only days before and felt my jaw drop as I glanced at one menu where milkshakes were a staggering $7.50.

If that isn’t enough, there are at least two takeaway stores where a mere two bucks will fill your tummy with milky goodness. The thought of such modestly priced goods led me to eat out on rochester street over the course of a month and compare the food and drink on offer.

At Classic kebabs and the unnamed takeaway store on the corner, I enjoyed vanilla milkshakes that were cool and refreshing. Purists may want to know, though, that neither contain ice-cream. one relative insisted to me that a milkshake just isn’t a milkshake without ice-cream, but considering that relative developed diabetes as a result of obesity, I was quite happy

with plain milk, thank you.The service at both was exceptional:

fast and friendly. Classic kebabs’ range of Turkish food is to be commended, particularly the sumptuous range of gozleme on offer.

It’s often said that when you’re uncertain, follow the crowd. on my visit to rochester street, the crowd were dining al fresco at bar Cortona. Walking inside the bustling café, I wondered if it would be possible to find a seat either inside or outside due to the volume of patrons. In the end, this was not a problem. upon glancing at a menu which read that a pie with salad was $13.50 my decision was made for me: I walked out, though it’s a fair bet no one even noticed.

Instead, I chose ricoza Café at 7 rochester street where I settled for a ham and cheese omelette ($9) that came with either chips or salad. (offering chips with every meal seems to be a recurring pattern amongst many eateries in Homebush).

Had I visited the decrepit men’s toilet first, there’s a strong chance that I would never have ordered here, though my breakfast, when it came, was fresh, hearty and, I hope, cleaner than the

toilet. still, the café does such a brusque trade that none of the other diners must be too worried. The assortment of newspapers on offer for reading also seems to add to its popularity.

For lunch, Golden rickshaw does a great special for $9. my lemon chicken and rice was filling and all meals on the lunch special come with rice: fried or steamed, or fried noodles. Wok Inn, under new management, also has an impressive range of Asian cuisine.

Anyone just after a snack is spoilt for choice at Phan’s Hot bread where croissant and muffins are only $1.50 each. The sandwiches are also fresh and good value, too.

yet, after sampling much of what’s on offer in rochester street, it was the first two takeaway shops that impressed me most. They may not be much on the eye, but both are great for price and service, and that makes them winners in my book.

For Indian food lovers, which I am not, I’ve been assured that the cheese and mushroom dosas at Janani restaurant on burlington road is where you should head.

Editor’s note: Adding my two cents worth! The $5 chicken and salad rolls from Phan’s Hot Bread are my pick for the best in the inner west.

beTHleHem College religious education Coordinator liz moodey is the proud recipient of the br marcellin Flynn Award for her master of religious education studies at the Australian Catholic university, as the most outstanding postgraduate student.

liz, who has been teaching for 12 years, was speechless upon hearing the good news.

“ I s to o d sp e e ch l e ss momentarily until I received a massive hug of congratulations

from my mother. A hug that was filled with so much emotion recognising the sacrifices and hardships I experienced in completing this degree,” she said.

liz’s post-graduate degree began in 2008, a year after her father’s death from a brain tumour. In 2009 her mother was diagnosed with breast cancer.

“I experienced the support, strength and love of family, friends and colleagues. This award not only affirms what I achieved but also all the

postgraduate students who believed in what they could achieve,” she said.

“I am very grateful for br marcellin Flynn’s family and the marist brothers for establishing this award in 2004. I began my vocation as a teacher in 2001 at marist College kogarah and was immersed in the charisma of marcellin Champagnat. brother marcellin Flynn was an amazing man who I believe was a visionary for Catholic education.”

IT WAs hands-on learning for primary students at north strathfield when the lucky group were able witness the Transit of Venus live on 6 June thanks to a hobby astronomer and school parent michael richardson.

Captain Cook travelled halfway round the world to witness the rare event, sighting the eastern coastline of Terra Australis in the process. Astrophysicists and onlookers had been eagerly awaiting the once in a century event, which occurred between 8.16 am to 2.44 pm (AesT).

mr richardson’s personal telescope was specially fitted with a custom designed solar filter to block out 99.99% of the light, making it safe to focus directly at the sun.

“Can you see the small black dot? That is Venus against the backdrop of the sun”, mr richardson patiently explained to students as each took their turn to view Venus.

“I was thrilled to be looking through such a powerful telescope because we wouldn’t normally get this chance”, said stage 2 student, Dominic. “It was amazing how you can see Venus so clearly,” added Dion.

Aaron, who is currently studying a bachelor of Dentistry at Griffith university, is appreciative of the assistance.

“The support rIDbC provided me was invaluable. Without my support teachers helping me during high school I would have not been able to make it to where I am now. I have so much gratitude and appreciation for everything they have done for me,” said Aaron.

“As a hearing impaired student, this prize means so much both

It seems that my hard work and determination during the HsC has paid off, as has the efforts of my family, especially my mother and father. my message to other hearing impaired students is that the only obstacle stopping you from achieving your dreams is yourself – so just focus on what you want and you will get there.”

PublIC schools in new south Wales wanting to bring environmental and sustainability projects to life are invited to apply for the first round of the 2012 Teachers environment Fund grants.

Applications are now open, and local schools and TAFe/CITs have until 29 June to apply for grants of up to $2,500 from the Teachers environment Fund, an initiative of Teachers mutual bank.

According to steve James, Ceo of Teachers mutual bank, the grants provide an opportunity for teachers to get kids out of the classroom and promote sustainability through hands- on learning experiences.

“We know that there are many

schools across nsW that would love to integrate environmental projects into their curriculum but unfortunately don’t have the resources, so these grants enable those projects to come to life,” he said.

Teachers mutual bank awards grants to schools that submit environmental proposals demonstrating that they are viable in the long-term, linked to a broader environmental education strategy, are supported by the school and wider community and monitored and measured effectively.

Classical piano and soprano duo emily- ‐Rose sarkova (left) and susannah Bishop

A ClAssICAl music debut performance sounds a bit stuffy and a tad posh. A great jazz night or rocking along

with a top band sounds much more fun.

The posh perception is about to be challenged by two young, talented and – as it happens – sexy and drop-dead gorgeous - Croydon young women who are determined to prove that classical music is fun.

After years of c o n s e r v at o r i u m study in europe, susannah bishop and emily- ‐rose sarkova have returned to form a different and exciting soprano and piano act and will make their debut performance, ‘A Tale from Five lands’, at The Independent Theatre in north sydney on June 23.

“All that ‘hush hush’ and not knowing if you are allowed to clap whenever you like during classical music performances is not for us,” emily-rose explains.

susannah, a soprano who is also trained in musical theatre, agrees.

“We sort of hate the formalism of it all. you go to a classical concert and feel you have to sit there,” she says before emily-rose chips in with, “very quietly – no rustling…. And don’t clap between movements.”

“We will be fine with anyone clapping. no dirty looks from us,” emily says.

“We may even finish with a piece from monty Python,” susannah says with a wink.

Their love of lush harmonies,

lyrical writing and both the serious and humorous poetics of song come together in a concert featuring works by rachmaninoff, britten, brahms, Warlock and Debussy and a world premiere of a piece written specifically for the duo by young Australian composer owen salome.

susannah bishop h a s r e c e n t l y c o m p l e t e d a masters at the prestigious royal northern College of music in the uk and emily- ‐rose is a graduate of the sydney Conservatorium of music in performance, completing a year in Germany on

scholarship. They regularly perform in a folk group, Chaika and a Tango Quintet, Tangalo.

Performing at The Independent Theatre is of special significance for pianist emily- ‐rose as it was a common stomping ground for her parents in the 1970s – actor ron blanchard and actress eliska sarka. “It is very special to literally walk in your parent’s footsteps”.

ron blanchard will join susannah and his daughter on stage to recreate some of his theatrical magic with poetry readings.

IT Is the second most-common cancer, but bowel cancer is also one of the easiest to cure, according to Concord Hospital’s Professor marc Gladman.

According to Professor marc Gladman, if detected early can be easy to cure. However, he has noticed a reluctance amongst people to talk about it.

“Despite being one of the most preventable cancers, bowel cancer is something people don’t like to talk about; it’s a conversation-killer,” Professor Gladman said.

“Discussing your most intimate bodily functions with a stranger is not easy but thousands die every year because they would rather suffer in silence than to have changes in the colour, consistency or frequency

of their stools or rectal bleeding checked out by a doctor.”

He also listed unexplained weight loss or excessive tiredness as other signs to pay attention to.

“These symptoms can be clear indications of colorectal cancer which, if left untreated, can kill within months,” Professor Gladman added.

“I would strongly encourage people to get over their reluctance to discuss their concerns with a health professional and get their bowel symptoms thoroughly assessed to rule out bowel cancer.”

As part of this year’s bowel Cancer Awareness Week, Professor Gladman was joined by Drummoyne mP John sidoti at Concord Hospital, handing out red apples to visitors, patients and staff.

FAmIlIes who receive Family Tax benefit payments are being encouraged to lodge any outstanding tax returns and provide an estimate of their income for the new financial year.

minister for Human services senator kim Carr said letters were recently sent to more than 1.5 million families who normally receive fortnightly Family Tax benefit payments.

“The Australian Government’s Department of Human services asks families to provide a reasonable estimate of their income for the coming financial year so they can be paid the correct rate of Family Tax benefit for their circumstances,” senator Carr said.

“Providing a realistic estimate

means eligible families can receive annual Family Tax benefit supplement payments and reduce the risk of receiving an overpayment.”

According to Carr, the Department automatically recalculates and raises income estimates from year to year and families may choose to accept this estimate instead of providing their own.“This new family income estimate for the next financial year is based on the family’s current estimate and is raised in line with changes in the Australian Average Weekly earnings. It’s a good option for families whose income doesn’t tend to fluctuate much throughout the year,” he added.

THe nexT drop-in session for inner west residents to share their views on how sydney should grow over the next 20 years will be held by the nsW Department of Planning and Infrastructure on Wednesday 20 June at strathfield library.

Deputy Director-General Ian reynolds said 15 drop-in sessions are being held across sydney during may and June to hear from local people about their ideas for a new metropolitan strategy.

“We want to know what sydneysiders consider to be the big issues for them in their local areas – this might be about housing, employment, transport, or the environment.

“This is the first time we’ve actually undertaken this kind of consultation and we are looking

forward to getting direct feedback about what people want in the long-term plan for sydney,” he said.

Department representatives will be available at strathfield library on June 20 between 2pm and 5pm. Feedback from the 15 sessions will help inform a new metropolitan strategy, which will be prepared alongside the long-Term Transport master Plan and state Infrastructure strategy. A draft metropolitan strategy will be released for comment later this year.

b u rWo o D’ s e u r e l l a Community services will receive $25,000 from the Australian Government to help get ready for a national Disability Insurance scheme.

Federal member for reid, John murphy mP, said eurella was among 64 successful recipients of grants worth up to $30,000 as part of the Australian Government’s nDIs readiness Fund.

The fund is part of a $3.1 million investment to help Australian disability enterprises prepare for the reform.

According to mr murphy, the funding will help eurella

prepare for the changes ahead by helping with the costs of policy and procedure development.

“It’s important for all areas of the disability sector to be ready to make the change, including our Australian Disability enterprises which employ more than 20,000 Australians,” he said.

“We want Australians with disability, their families and carers, to start benefitting from an nDIs as quickly as possible. For the first time, Australians with significant and permanent disability will receive care and support over their lifetime, regardless of how they acquired their disability.”

An All-AbIlITIes playground will be added to strathfield Park after receiving funding from the metropolitan Greenspace Program.

The nsW Government has awarded $2.5 million in funding to councils in the latest round of the Program, to help councils add to open space and recreational trails across sydney.

state mP for strathfield Charles Casuscelli said the stage 1 of strathfield Park all-abilities playground was among 23 projects receiving funding under the latest round of the metropolitan Greenspace Program.

“strathfield Council will use the $10,000 funding for a detailed design of an all-abilities playground in strathfield Park, located 500m from the Cooks river regional bay to bay Cycleway,” he said.

The metropolitan Greenspace Program has now awarded more than $32 million to councils for 539 projects since the program began in 1990.

The Drummoyne electorate will benefit from $211,487 in funding from the program with mP John sidoti announcing that the Arnott’s reserve embellishment was among 23 projects to get the green light under the latest round.

“The program allows state and local government to jointly improve regionally-significant open space for recreational purposes,” mr sidoti commented.

“The funding will be used to implement the Powells Creek masterplan, including landscaping and a new shared path along Powells Creek, near the m4, to link Homebush with sydney olympic Park.”

Inner west drivers will be pleased to hear that a dangerous black spot on Cosgrove road is about to be fixed.

Funding has been provided to install curve advisory signage, a double centre line, a high friction surface and wire rope barrier at Cosgrove road, between Punchbowl road and Liverpool road, Strathfield South.

Member for Watson, Tony Burke, who announced the funds, spoke of his own frustration and concern when driving on the road.

“I’ve been using Cosgrove road all my life. You have a long stretch without cross roads where plenty

of vehicles find themselves going beyond the speed limit just as they approach the bend,” he said.

“We’ve had accident after accident where cars and trucks heading towards Belfield have edged across the centre lines into oncoming traffic”.

The project was recommended by a panel of independent road safety experts and will be delivered during the course of the coming financial year.

“This funding makes sure that every trip down Cosgrove road will be safer than it ever was before,” added Mr Burke.

AT mosT Chinese restaurants, the choice is simple: lemon chicken or sweet-and-sour pork.

Well, that’s a bit of an exaggeration, but the point is that a lot of menus have a certain degree of predictability about them. not so at Ashfield’s Taste of shanghai where each page of the well-thumbed menus reveals dishes you would never have expected.

After much deliberation, I finally settled for stir-fried shrimp with mushrooms and vegetables ($18.80), while my dining partner ordered the cumin lamb ($16.80).

We arrived just before midday in an attempt to beat

the lunch-time rush. Getting a seat was easy enough, though the restaurant was by no means empty. by the time we had eaten and departed, it was almost entirely full of hungry patrons. I have no doubts about managing director Aaron mi’s claim that at night-time, there’s a queue that stretches out the door.

Waiting time for our meal was short, while we were given a deliciously healthy entrée of beans and pickled vegetables which certainly whetted my appetite.

When my meal arrived, I was

surprised to see a bowl with so many prawns (sorry, shrimp). This isn’t a bad thing, it’s just that most restaurants are sparing

when it comes to seafood. Generous, certainly, though my meal was hearty without making me feel bloated and exhausted afterwards.

As my dining partner and I left, she remarked to me that unlike many of the meals she had eaten, this one didn’t leave an aftertaste; but it

certainly left a good impression.Taste of shanghai is located

WITH less than four weeks to go, the 2012 Cooks river Fun run course on sunday June 24 has been officially certified by running Australia.

now in its third year, the Cooks river Fun run is increasing in popularity on the sydney running calendar.

“running Australia last week marked out the 5km course for the fun run, which will take place on June 24 from Freshwater Park in strathfield, to the exact specifications. Course certification allows runners in training for entrance to other events to ensure their race time is valid,” a strathfield Council spokesperson said.

The fun run course takes in the foreshore of the Cooks river along the

bay to bay cycleway and is a great event for the whole family at just $20 for adults and $15 for children whilst the early bird offer applies.

Fun run organisers are hoping to exceed last year’s 273 entrants.

late registrations will be accepted on race day from 7-8.30am with the 5km race getting started at 9am and the 10km and walk shortly afterward. Presentations will follow the race from 10.15am. A shuttle bus will be available to transport participants and spectators from strathfield station to and from Freshwater Park from 7am.

oFFICes in sydney will empty on Friday June 15 as workers put down their pens, switch off mobiles, log out of their computers and head to barangaroo for the city’s most challenging lunch time corporate speed race, the City mile Dash.

The Cancer Council City mile Dash is a lunchtime corporate speed race around barangaroo over a 1.6km course to raise funds to go towards testicular and ovarian cancer research and prevention programs

The challenge is in for Ceos, bankers, lawyers, journalists,

secretaries and retailers for men and women who will go head-to-head in a fierce race to take on business rivals for the chance to win the title of the fastest corporate company in sydney.

strathfield resident and structural engineer with lend lease, Patrick boidin is one of those runners. With his lend lease co-workers, their team ‘Warriors Fighting Cancer’ is the highest fund-raiser leading into the event.

“It’s a great excuse to get out of the office and do some exercise while

also challenging your co-workers, bosses or rival companies to tackle the mile for a good cause,” Patrick said.

Around 2,000 Australians are expected to be diagnosed with ovarian (1300) and testicular (700) cancer this year.

“If you think you’ve got what it takes to be named fastest in the city, then get your colleagues together, start training and ‘Go For Gonads’,” urged Australian Ironwoman and Cancer Council City mile Dash ambassador, Candice Falzon.
