BRITANNICA INTERNATIONAL SCHOOL Friday 14 th October 2016 NEWSLETTER Upcoming Events Number 8 Dear Parents It was great to welcome so many parents yesterday to our Primary Parents Afternoon. We hope that you found this a useful and insightful exchange of information on your child’s progress as we work together in partnership in the year ahead. International Day Next Friday we celebrate our International Day prior to the October half term break. Today we have sent out a schedule of events taking place for both primary and secondary students. Once again the PSA have been busy planning the Food Court, staff and children in primary their performances and staff and students in secondary their form room activities. Please read over the schedule so you are clear of the order of events. All parents are most welcome to attend both the primary performances and also to join us at the end of the day for the flag parade. The Food Court is, however, only open to staff, students and parents who have been directly involved in planning and catering for this event. We respectfully ask that this be adhered to in fairness to those who have given of their time and resources. All parents are of course welcome to get in- volved with this process. Please also note that school finishes earlier on this day at 2:30p.m. for all stu- dents of all ages. ECA clubs will follow on from 2:30 – 3:30. All parents are asked to pick up students in good time. School begins again after the holidays for all students on Wednesday 2 nd November. Security Procedures As mentioned earlier this term we are gradually developing our new security infrastructure and systems. This week we began to introduce the new ID swipe cards to our staff and have agreed various new proce- dures with the team ready to put in place. On Monday you will be sent a comprehensive document which outlines our new procedures for all parents and students. We will be phasing in the introduction of ID swipe cards for use by students and parents of younger children. All the details are in the documentation and we respectfully ask you to read this in detail to familiarise yourself with the new requirements coming into place. Next week we will be issuing cards to our Year 10- Year 13 students. This will be followed by our Year 5-9 students from 7 th November and then our Year 1-4 students from 14 th November. We will have another week wb 21 st November where a full ‘soft start’ will continue and then the agreed procedures will be ex- pected to be adhered to by all members of the school community and hopefully fully operational by wb 28 th November. It is your responsibility as parents to be clear of the procedures. If you have any questions after receiving the documentation please do ask a member of staff for clarification. Facilities Update I am delighted to confirm that our Jungle Gym is now fully up and running. In addition we expect our new covered gym facility to be completed this weekend ready for use next week for PE lessons, lunchtime activi- ties and ECA clubs alongside our existing gym, swimming pool and to playground. Further details to follow in due course. Hungry for Turkey

Turkish Hungarian Literature Partnership Project

As an opportunity to start building international partnership with other schools and students, the Hungarian Department at Britannica International School will start a project about Hungar-ian and Turkish literature in this school year. METU Development Foundation High School (Ankara) invited us to join their project in 2016-17.

At Britannica 8 students have joined from Year9 and Year10. We have created our Edmodo group already and have started reading. We are waiting for the Turkish students to join as well.

As part of the project we are reading a well known Turkish book translated into Hungarian and students will do different online activities based on their readings throughout the school year. The book is The Last Train to Istanbul) by Ayse Kulin.

The partner school in Ankara will read Faithlessness by Imre Kertész and do similar activities in Turkish.

At the end of the project the partner school’s students will visit Budapest and meet us to dis-cuss what we have read. We are also planning to guide them around in Budapest.

During the project we will have the opportunity to build a professional international partner-ship with another international school, start a long term project based on this one and look for other schools for the future. We will also learn about Turkish literature, different aspects of WW2, Turkish history and culture.

All about me- Year 1 Axe. Year 1 Axe have been working hard over the past six weeks

on our topic ‘all about me’.

First the children spent some time in ‘Pirate’s Cove’ drawing round each other onto large

sheets of paper. Back in the classroom they cut these out and added labels to the different

parts of their body.

Next the children cut out a smaller version of a body and added labels too. They enjoyed sing-

ing ‘Heads, shoulders, knees and toes’

After that the children drew fantastic pictures of themselves, using

mirrors to look closely. Their work was so amazing that we turned it

into a display!!

Then we took a photograph of each child and cut in half. The children then drew the other

half and carefully coloured in, they look super !

Then we sequenced pictures of people who are a range of ages. We talked about what babies

can do, what the children can do now and they predicted what they would do as an adult. They

particularly enjoyed watching the video of roller-skating babies!

All of the Year 1 children have really enjoyed this topic.

They have had the chance to be creative, share ideas, think about themselves including their

past and their future and have had really good fun too!

Well done!

PSA News

Dear Parents,

As you might know International Day is a very popular day, not only amongst the chil-

dren but also for both staff and parents! There will be performances by all primary clas-ses in the auditorium, special activities within the secondary department and the day

will end with a flag parade.

As PSA we also contribute to this day by organising a Food Court: The gym will be transformed into a big ‘restaurant’ where the children can see, smell and taste different

delicacies from all around the globe.

Please note the food court is only ‘open’ to students, staff & participating parents.

So far we have found 29 countries willing and able to participate in this year’s event; an all time high! Many thanks to all parents who volunteered to make this day a special day

for the students. A special word of thanks to the numerous parents who bravely offered to solely represent their country.

This year the following countries can be found on our Internal Day Food Court: USA/

Canada/Mexico, China, Iran, Israel, Brazil, Italy, UK, Greece, Japan, India, Sweden/Finland, South Africa, Germany, Czech Republic/Slovakia, Croatia/Serbia, Russia/

Georgia, Thailand, Turkey, Poland, The Netherlands, Hungary, Vietnam and Latvia.
