bating and water polo: it has been another fun-packed,

varied and active term. The boys have even managed to

As ever, I have tried to include as much as possible.

decent Spring weather.

The HOUSE CONCERT :

“It was the funniest, yet most moving evening that we have had in ages.”

“Variety, good pace, good judgment, humour, sensitivity, imagination and a real corporate spirit – younger and old-

er working together.”

We were entertained to some great music: from Luke Howard, Laurie Cox, Finn Virgo and Jack de Bruin’s brash

“Seven Nation Army” to Nick Atkins, Noah Britton and James Tomlinson playing Shostakovich. James switched to

piano to perform—so to speak— Tom Lehrer’s “Masochism Tango”. Nick followed with a march from Prokofiev on

cello —and a Jack Johnson song on ukulele! He also accompanied James Young, who sang a very soulful, moving

version of Labrinth’s recent hit “Jealous.” Oli Gent smashed his rendition of Vance Joy’s “Riptide” with support of

Jack de Bruin (guitar) and David Macario-Jones (drums.) David also soloed on violin, and Oli on cello. The L6 trio of

Hugo Darby, Tom Lambert and Ryan Packham entertained with a hilarious spoof of “Flying” from High School Musi-

cal; Jack and Fin (“Jack Boi Finn”) offered us their brilliant and very skilful impromptu on sax and drums. David Mei-

jer’s comedy song is a regular highlight of each Powell Concert. This year we were educated in the History of US

Presidents – much to his History-teaching Housemaster’s approval.

We enjoyed plenty of great sketches, too: Zaccariah Andal delivered a wonderfully stroppy “Letter to Santa”. Giles

Kerr then welcomed us to Hell. Giles joined with George Ruskin to teach us elementary dating for men. A cross-

year-group ensemble of Harry B, Bertie B, James T, Giles, David, and James Y staged the classic “Dirty Fork” sketch.

Finn Virgo, with some help from David, produced some great videos of the U6 both “at work” and miming along to

some popular hits. We were in awe of George Peters’ scootering video (and don’t try this at home…)

The House finished the evening with a cover of American Authors’ “Best Day of My Life.”

Many thanks to those who contributed so generously to £276 raised for the chosen charity, the Will Foundation.

Hockey: We were able to field a strong Senior House Hockey team. Harry Beeching and Luke Howard were regulars for the

1st XI; Bertie Beeching, Adam Taylor-Hall and Noah Britton starred for the 2nd and 3rd XIs. Arthur Pickard and Dan Young rep-

resented the U16As with great skill. They were very ably supported by James Alsop, Charlie Hickman, Laurie Cox, Jack de Bru-

in, George Crathern and John Wallinger to a very commendable third place in a high-quality inter-house competition.

The Y10 boys were very ably led by Felix Hickman. They battled well, particularly in a terrific 2-2 draw with Craig, where Louis

Wood and Savvas Demos both scored. Giles Kerr put in some great saves, Louis Wilson showed some great skills, Kieran Chen-

ey a rock in defence.

The Y9 House hockey was won by the Powell boys. Everyone played their part. Particular mention to the outstanding Louis

Heywood, the extraordinary hand-eye coordination of Will Dawkins (who scored the best goal of the day) and the steadfast

keeping of Fintan Gander.

Football: School teams were very well represented. George Crathern and John Fieldhouse in the 1st XI; Ryan Packham,

James Alsop, Illia Lazorko for the Seconds; Jack de Bruin, Laurie Cox, Logan Collins, Krishan Patel, John Wallinger, Ben Saun-

ders, Finn Deans, Tom Lambert, Charley Klus, Laurie Cox and Nick “The Glove” Tullett for the 3rds and 4ths.

As with the hockey, the House competition was keenly contested, and most importantly, good fun. The Juniors played well

against Craig and Wargrave. James Young, Will Dawkins, Felix Hickman and Savvas Demos scored some great goals. Fintan

Gander made some excellent saves—as did Felix (if somewhat less legally!) The Seniors fought bravely against Craig and Gon-

ville. John Wallinger cracked the crossbar from 25 yards, George Crathern showed real class in midfield, and Logan Collins put

in some thundering tackles.

Other Sport: Congratulations to Louis Wood, who was once again crowned U15 County Champion for 50m backstroke. Louis

and Luke Howard both represented the College to great success in the Bath Cup. Joel Pearce is one of the top swimmers in Y9,

and starred for the house in the inter-house water polo competition.

In rugby, Kieran Cheney, Louis Wood and Louie Trott were all selected for Sussex District development squads. Felix Hickman

joined Kieran and Louis as part of a very successful U15s Sevens squad. Olivier Schoppen continues to lead an increasingly for-

midable fencing team. Illia Lazorko played well for the College at Basketball. Charley Klus is becoming an excellent squash

coach, helping run the junior activity; Logan Collins was awarded his yellow belt for kick-boxing. James Young has represented

the College in Fives; Ryan Packham, Joel Pearce, Murray Trott and Felix Hickman have all been gearing up for the new cricket

season; James Young and Will Dawkins have impressed in pre-season tennis practices.

George Crathern and Illia Lazorko all joined

them in the top twelve to earn the Powell Sen-

ior team the much coveted House trophy. The

Senior B team came second. In the junior race,

Louis Heywood came third.

chocolate in the Common Room after the

their excellent work.
