We raised $626.62! Ms. Figueroa came in 1st!! Her class had -$3.40. Mrs. Leone came in 2nd place with -$6.40 & Mrs. Russ 3rd with -$7.79. Ms. Ferrante actually had the most pennies BUT got killed with $34 in bills and close to $20 in silver coins! Ms. Figueroa's class will receive extra recess & ice pops. Thanks to all that contributed and to Doreen Kammerer for keeping track of all the change. The enthusiasm from all of the students all week was so great! By Steven Pepe Tuesday, March 25 was the drama club play, At the Bandstand. It was a show about an old TV show from the 1950’s, where teenagers danced on a popular TV show called “At the Bandstand". Everybody had so much fun! The audience was having their laughs and enjoying the show. Everybody on stage was doing amazing. We had 2 performances, one in the daytime at school and one at night for the parents. The night was even better than the afternoon! They never made any big mistakes in both shows, overall, I think that we did great. Mrs. Schwam and Ms. McNally had lots of fun with everyone in the cast. You should join the drama club next year because in my first year as Michael Miller, one of the twins in the main cast of the show, I had lots of fun. The fun awaits for next year’s drama club as they will put on another amazing show! 100th Day of School Parent's Night Out Bowne-Munro Elementary School East Brunswick, NJ Published by the PTA April 2014 On Wednesday, February 26, everyone at Bowne celebrated the 100th day of school by dressing as if they were 100 years old. The teachers walked through the halls very slowly and many of them used canes. We thought Ms. Saunders was never going to get her students to gym...that walker really slowed her down. Mrs. Goomer had to sit on the bench to rest before heading up to her classroom. Here is a picture of how great Ms. Bubnis and Mrs. Binder looked! What a great night we had at La Tavola! A big thank you to all who helped out...Nicole Pepe, Jessica Logan, Anita Tsoukalas and, of course, The Hazmats! The National Education Association's Read Across America day is an annual reading motivation and awareness program that calls for every child in every community to celebrate reading on March 2, the birthday of Dr. Seuss. At Bowne, our teachers decorated the hallways, came up with some amazing treats for our visitors and read Dr. Suess books. At one point, Mrs. Boley called for everyone to stop what they are doing and read. The day concluded with an assembly where the favorite books for each grade level were announced. Oh, and we even had the Cat in the Hat make an appearance! By Hailey Schaffer On March 19 th , our school hosted the famous basketball game 5 th Graders vs Bowne Munro Staff at the East Brunswick High School. Wow, I must say that it was a nail- biting game. My fellow 5 th graders and I played a very competitive game. With all of the people who came to watch, the bleachers were filled to the last spot. The overall score was 37-36 with the 5 th graders wining the game. Everything went down to the fabulous last shot when a certain fifth grade girl named Hailey Schaffer put in the winning hoop, and it was a swoosh. The teachers were putting in shots from left to right and so were the fifth graders. Let's not forget the cheerleaders from the fifth grade and the Bowne Staff that made a pyramid during half time. The event was a success. Everyone pitched in to help, the helpers at the concession stand, scorekeepers, Mr. Bayuk, the ref (Mr. Kennedy), and the wonderful coach, Jan Stralkus. They all did great a great job! I think it was one of the best basketball games ever! Great job to all of the students and staff who scored and participated in the Fifth Grade vs. Staff 2014 basketball game.

April 3 By Karlene Collins She's coming this week!! Patricia Polacco will be here at Bowne to tell us about her books and to answer some of our questions. You should go read some of her books so you are ready for her visit on April 3. She wrote so many great books so make sure you try to read them all. The PTA has made arrangements for the world-renowned Patricia Polacco to spend the morning of April 3 at Bowne-Munro. Ms. Polacco is an award-winning author and illustrator of over 50 children's books. The day will consist of presentations by Ms. Polacco as well as an opportunity for kids to ask her questions. If anyone would like to become more familiar with her books before she gets her, we suggest reading: Meteor, Thank You Mr. Falker, The Junkyard Wonders, The Keeping Quilt and My Rotten Red-Headed Older Brother. Older students may enjoy Chicken Sunday and Pink and Say. Visit http://www.patriciapolacco.com to learn more about our guest.

Health Fair

Principal For A Day

As part of the EBEF fundraiser, Bowne-Munro had a new principal on March 14. As Principal for a Day, Jason Agrait helped Mrs. Boley in the day-to-day functions of running our school. We all think Jason makes a wonderful principal! All proceeds have been donated to the EBEF to support programs that enhance and enrich the curriculum of our students.

Student Council News

Fit Girls Spring is here and that means Fit Girls will be starting soon. For the fifth year in a row, 4th and 5th grade girls will be able to participate in a national program, entitled Fit Girls. Fit Girls is a 6-8 week program that promotes fitness while preparing the girls for their ultimate goal...a 2 mile run around the High School track. Look for information to come home soon. For more information, contact Mrs. Ficke,

Ms. Bubnis or visit http://www.fitgirls.org

Last Friday, Mrs. Ficke hosted a Health Fair at Bowne which was both informative and so much fun! Kindergarten and 1st graders enjoyed a visit with a dentist, a nutritionist, and they heard about the dangers of smoking. They were also treated to an extra special visit from Otto who taught them about car and street safety. Ask them about it! 2nd and 3rd graders heard about the dangers of household poisons. They also learned about how important it is to wear helmets and protect their brains. They sat with 2 members of the EB Rescue Squad who spoke about first aid, 911 and the Heimlich Maneuver. The loved it when they got to sit and talk with Officer Rob (Galiardo) for 20 minutes. Their day finished up with a great yoga class. 4th and 5th graders were taught about concussions and how serious this injury can be. They heard about the hazards of smoking. They participated in an exercise that taught them about the importance of a healthy diet. A representative from the Heart Association taught them ways to take good care of their heart. One of the highlights of the day was a special visit from State Troopers Robertson and Leip...and Scales and Katie (their police dogs). Bowne students asked some great questions and may have even found a new respect for the work that these troopers and dogs do to catch the "bad guys".

By Mrs. Ficke I would like to thank all the students for sending in their pennies and coins for Pennies for Patients. We collected a total of $250.00, which will benefit The Leukemia & Lymphoma Society. Our Kindergarten classes collected the most, winning an extra recess. Thank you!

The Student Council is going to collect soup to donate to the local food pantry soon. Members of the Bowne-Munro Student Council will spend the next couple of weeks making Rainbow Loom bracelets. For each contribution of soup, students will receive one rainbow loom bracelet as a thank you for their support.

4th Grade Informational Texts By Jolie Mikhail In 4th grade, we just finished the informational text unit. It was so much fun! We learned a fun new way to use 8-pocket folders. We used them to collect information about the topic we were writing about. I wrote about penguins and my friend, Alina, wrote about stray cats. There were some other crazy and cool topics. Hey, third graders, you probably can't wait till 4th grade, huh?!

1st Grade Guppies By Jolie Mikhail The 1st graders have a lot of animals in their classrooms. They have guppies (or course), snails, rolly pollys, and millipedes. My sister, Aimee, says that the guppies are the best pet in the class. She had just taken them home on March 28. My sister says she loved to play with them in class.

Attention 4th Graders : Due to a snow day back in February, the 4th graders will get one more session on Tuesday, April 1 at 8:00 am. Attention 3rd Graders: Due to a last-minute cancellation, the make-up session will be on Tuesday, April 8 at 8:00 am.

No More Snow Days! By Steven Pepe This month, we had NO SNOW DAYS at all. Not one snow day all month! There were no days to play except the weekends. The month before, it seemed like we had snow days almost every single week! To me, it seemed to fly right by. Thank goodness. Did that happen with you too?

Pen Pal Letters By Karlene Collins The fifth graders received their pen pal letters from the Hammarskjold 6th graders recently. We can't wait to find out who we have been writing to when we go to the pen pal picnic next month. I wonder who it is!

The Planetarium

By Yasmin Medel When we first go into the planetarium, it is very dark but it's ok because there is a small flash light . We have to take off our shoes and go through a tunnel to get in. So far, we learned about constellations like Orion, Perseus, the Big Dipper, the Little Dipper, Campfire of the North and so much more. It is really so much fun. You guys should all see it!

The Bobbin Girl By Alina Chowdhury and Jolie Mikhail Bobbin Girl is a great book. It has suspense and sadness, but it also has parts that are happy and encouraging. After we read this book, we wrote a letter to anyone we wanted, like a BFF. It's just a quick project but it is so much fun. It only took about 2 days. So remember, it's a great B-O-O-K (book)! Read it when you can but not in 3rd grade because you guys will read it next year.

Spring Recess Reminder Due to the emergency closing days, all schools will be in session on Monday, April 14 and Wednesday, April 16.

Attention 5th Graders There are still a few 5th graders who have not sent in a baby picture! This is such a fun page in the yearbook and we hate for you to miss out on it.

Also, we strive to have 100% of the 5th graders receive a yearbook. In June, the PTA and class moms host a yearbook-signing party and it would be very sad if not every 5th grader received a book. Please submit your order today! Any questions, contact Carolyn Caroselli at [email protected].
