Evidence suggests that this practice often had devastating results for children, families and communities. The purpose of this project is to learn more about an alternative approach to handling these cases that is based on traditional Aboriginal customs. This approach was developed by Tikinagan, and it is called Mamow Obiki-ahwahsoowin (in English; Everyone working together to raise our children). Description The purpose of this project is to use a participatory approach to explore how best to provide community-based mental health services and supports that will be effective for people from culturally diverse backgrounds. Specific objectives include:
1. To build a framework and strategies for community mental practice that can guide formal services and informal supports to be culturally empowering.
2. To develop, pilot, and evaluate innovative demonstration projects that promote culturally empowering community mental health services and supports.
15
3. To disseminate and transfer knowledge gained to mental health service users, practitioners (mental health, and ethno-racial service providers), students, policy-makers, and academics.
4. To model participatory inquiry and partnership research in building applied knowledge, informing new practice, and training diverse groups.
This project has two sites: Toronto and Waterloo Region. It explores how people from five ethno-linguistic communities (Somali, Polish, Punjabi, Latin American, and Mandarin) understand serious mental health struggles and how community mental health services and supports can best address their needs. Through this project, these five ethno-linguistic communities will work closely with local mental health services and leading local academics in the diversity and mental health fields, in order to create what we are calling a "culturally effective community mental health framework."
This is a five-year research study funded by Social Science and Humanities Research Council (SSHRC) and Ontario Trillium Foundation.
Project Update Thirteen CURA demonstration project proposals have been submitted for funding with various funders, including federal and provincial government ministries and foundations. Some of these have been funded and are at the initial stages of implementation.
The KDCHC Strengthening Mental Health project held a successful launch on August 13th
, with over 70 people in attendance.
Steering Committees will include representation from all the active demonstration projects, and will focus on this aspect of the project.
Knowledge Mobilization efforts for CURA will be the focus of the Partnership Group over the next year. This past spring has already seen many KM successes. Over the months of May and June, CURA partners presented at several conferences, including: CUexpo08 in Victoria; the International Community Psychology conference in Lisbon, Portugal; the International Qualitative Research on Mental Health conference in Tampere, Finland; the Social Work conference in Toronto, Ontario, and the International Congress of Qualitative Inquiry in Illinois.
