Learning Values for Life The 4 learning Rs: Reciprocal,

resourceful, resilient, reflective The 2 behaviour Rs: Respectful and

responsible

Important to develop learners – those who want to learn and know how to learn successfully. Developing life long learners

Why is this important? This is important so that we equip our

children with the dispositions needed to cope with whatever the future looks like.

New curriculum focuses on acquisition of knowledge – sets out WHAT children should know.

Doesn’t specify HOW this should be taught – we can still ensure we promote what we believe underpins good learning – AfL and 6Rs, teaching of skills.

* Sharing what success looks like* Visual Learning objectives & Success Criteria * Learning Partners* Feedback to children – Verbal and improvement marking. (Pink and Green)* Questioning

Assessment for learning

*

To encourage good behaviour we operate a sun and cloud system.

At the start of each week all children have a named peg attached to the sun.

As a school we believe that our learning dispositions are key to becoming successful learners. We use the 6 R’s as a

framework to encourage appropriate behaviour.

Reading We aim to promote a positive reading rich

environment, where children develop a love for reading.

We consider reading to be part of the foundations of great learning.

Please take the time to listen to your children read as often as you possibly can.

This needs to be recorded in their school planner in order to

complete the reading challenge.

Reading As teachers we will commit to listening to

your children read: once a week in a small guided reading group

(1:6) at least twice each half term individually other members of staff and volunteers may

hear your children as well. If you could give up a small amount of time

to come in and listen to a few readers, we would be very grateful!

Spelling All children will receive weekly spellings to learn. These spellings will link directly to the phase sounds

and key words that your child is learning. It is extremely important that children learn their

spellings- a little each day is the best way to help them to remember.

These are the units we will cover in year 1. We will also be focusing on your child’s handwriting and formation of cursive letters, however the appearance of your child’s hand writing will not be the main judgement of their writing when we assess half termly.

Our philosophy very much focuses on teaching the children the skills to be able to read.

Home learning Our philosophy is that home learning is something

that should be enjoyed by both children and parents.

We ask that the learning completed at home is something that the child wants to do, this may change each week and we feel that a balance of activities and styles works well.

We encourage creativity, so there may not be anything recorded in their journal, it might be a video or PowerPoint. We would, however, ask that the children put some real effort into their activities.

Each half term the teachers will send out a list of ideas to help, should you get stuck and occasionally there may be something more directed for the week.

We really value the learning that happens at home, especially family learning.

Your child will have the opportunity to share their home learning each week with the teacher and their peers in their colour group. (Please see the timetable for details of this)

We will award a sticker or a stamp in your child’s planner each time home learning is completed.

When your child has collected 15 stickers or stamps, they will receive an award.

We do encourage your child to complete home learning each week, however we also acknowledge that sometimes life does get very busy and that it is not always possible.

Maths Home Learning

KS1

OUR philosophy… Developing children’s mental maths skills is so

important in helping them become fluent and confident mathematicians. Mental maths home learning plays an extremely important part in helping them develop this confidence and make links within maths.

WE NEED YOUR HELP! It is part of our home-school home agreement that mental maths home learning is completed weekly alongsidespellings and regular reading.

Each week there will be information put into your child’s yellow mental maths books telling you what the weekly mental maths focus has been eg, doubling and halving small numbers, 5x and 10x tables, finding 10 more/10 less

There will also be PRACTICAL ideas for activities for you to do with your child at home to reinforce this learning

PLEASE LEAVE FEEDBACK EACH WEEK to let us know if your child enjoyed the task and how their level of understanding was

We will also follow these activities up in the classroom and if we feel your child’s understanding is different to what you see at home, we will talk to you about this

Brainteaser:

Can you add two one-digit numbers and a two digit number together mentally? Try putting the largest 2 digit number in your head first eg, 12 + 7 + 4=

How do you feel your child’s enjoyment of this task has been? (On a scale of 1 to 5)

1 2 3 4 5

An example of Mental mathsHome learning…

Mental Maths Home Learning _________________ This week we have been looking at adding 3 one digit numbers together mentallyEg, 2 + 5 + 1 = 89 + 6 + 1 = 16To help your child with their learning at home trythese games/activities:•Have a look at these numbers – can your childspot the number bond to 10 with two numbers to help him/her? 8 + 3 + 2 = 5 + 3 + 5 6 + 3 + 7 = •Give your child 3 one digit numbers – can they reorder them so the biggest number is first and then add them?Eg, 5 + 4 + 8 = •Roll 3 dice – child to add up those three numbers within10 seconds – they get a point each time they do. Can they get to 20 points? (Putting the largest number in their head first rather than adding all amounts on the dice

These activities and tasks are not designed to be time consuming and hard to manage. They should be enjoyable and quick!

ON our website… There are letters about mental maths

home learning expectations and ideas/websites to help your child learn their times tables

Please take a sheet which also has ideas and websites to help you support your child with their times tables and mental maths home learning
