More than one and a half months have elapsed since the report was submitted on July 27. The report named 787 govern- ment officials as being in cahoots with illegal mining barons. Considering the severity of the charges made against the officials, the chief secretary had ordered ad- ditional chief secretary K Jairaj to go through the recommendations and to hold an inquiry on the extent of involvement by government ser- vants. The chief secretary has now asked all department heads to be ready with the confidential service report (CSR) of those named in the Lokayukta report. The CSR is a file that contains de- tails of an individual government of- ficer from the day he joins the serv- ice. The file contains the perform- ance of the officer, his behavior, in- quiries, if any, promotions and all the other crucial details. Today, additional secretaries and principal secretaries of departments of finance, home, mines and geol- ogy, transport, commercial tax, principal secretary, fisheries and ports, forest and revenue. They were briefed about the al- legations made in the Loakyukta re- port and action that needs to be tak- en against them. The officers have 90 days to act from the day of the submission of the Lokayukta report. With one and a half months already elapsed, the government roughly has another 45 days to show some action being tak- en against the guilty officers and politicians. The meeting also discussed show-cause notices to be served against the guilty officials. Though the process has begun it might take quite a while, before such notices are served against all the guilty officials. The Lokayukta too is gearing up to take action against the guilty of- ficials. The corruption watchdog, which has been taken over by Justice Shiv- araj S Patil, can act against officials up to the level of additional chief secretaries. At the time of submitting the re- port, outgoing Lokayukta Justice Santosh Hegde made a strategic move by submitting the report to governor H R Bhardwaj, who can ask the Lokayukta now to act against guilty officials. The governor, too, has been in- dependently trying to act against the government and guilty government officials in the illegal mining cases. Today’s meeting was called after instructions from chief minister D V Sadananda Gowda to prove that there is some action from the gov- ernment’s side on the Lokayukta re- port. Former chief minister B S Yed- dyurappa lost his seat and is now at- tending the Lokayukta special court after the Lokayukta report square- ly blamed him. One not to be bogged down by such setbacks, Yeddyurappa has hoisted his own man, Gowda, to the chief minister’s post. A three-judge bench headed by Justice D K Jain directed the SIT, which is probing the riot cases, to submit its final report before the magistrate who was asked to decide whether to pro- ceed against Modi and 63 others, which includes senior govern- ment officials. The bench made it clear that there was no need for it to further monitor the riot cases. E‑auction of iron orestarts from Sept 14

New Delhi: The electronic auction of ironore stocks in the state, as directed by theSupreme Court, will begin from September14 and iron and steel producers havebeen invited to register for it, officialssaid.

“The first auction will be conductedon September 14,” said an official of theMSTC, which has been entrusted withthe responsibility of conducting e-auctionsby the apex court.

An official of the Karnataka’s minesand geology department also confirmedthe development, adding that “iron andsteel units have been invited to registerfor the e-auction on September 14”.

The official further said, “Initially, auc-tions will be 12,000 tonnes per week (fordifferent grades of iron ore), while thetarget is to increase it to about 40,000tonnes a day”.

This will gradually be raised to theSupreme Court directed levels of 1.5 milliontonnes a month, the state governmentofficial added.

When asked about the next round ofauctions, after September 14, the officialsaid, “It will depend upon the situation. It can be once in a week or thrice in amonth”.

Talking about the price of the iron ore,the state government official said that itwill be based on prices prevailing in themarkets of China/Japan sans export dutyand transportation costs to the ports.

The domestic taxes will, however, beapplicable, the official added.

The auctions are expected to providea temporary relief to the iron and steelindustry in the state, which has beenreeling under severe shortage of iron orefollowing a mining ban imposed by theapex court in Bellary, Tumkur and Chi-tradurga districts earlier.

The apex court, while banning themining due to large scale environmentaldegradation of area, had permitted toauction 1.5 million tonnes (MT) iron oreper month through e-auction route fromthe stock of 25.88 MT, lying at the minesin the state.

Besides this, a 3-member monitoringcommittee, headed by additional principalchief conservator of forest Deepak Sharma, was constituted to deal with sale andtransportation of the existing stock ofiron ore and maintain account of thesales proceeds.

Moreover, MSTC Ltd, a mini-ratna PSUspecialised in e-commerce, was entrustedto do the auctions.

According to industry sources, themonitoring committee is currently con-centrating on stocks in mines of Bellary, which are estimated at 14 MT. .

Auctions for stocks from mines of Chi-tradurga and Tumkur are likely to beginafter two months, industry sources added.

Besides Bellary, the mines in Chitradur-ga has around 7 MT of iron ore stocks, while Tumkur has a stock of 4 MT, theapex court appointed Central EmpoweredCommittee (CEC) had said in its report.

According to the Bangalore Chamber

of Industry and Commerce (BSIC), dailydemand of iron ore in the state is around1,04,000 tonnes.

Of this, about 26,000-27,000 tonnes ofsupplies for the raw material is metthrough NMDC – the only company per-mitted by the apex court to do mining inthe state.

Due to paucity of iron ore, many spongeiron plants have shut their operations, while leading steel and iron producerslike JSW Steel, MSPL, BMM Ispat, Sathava-hana Ispat, among others, have resortedto operating at reduced capacities.

Karnataka produces 16 MT of iron andsteel in a year, which is a little less than25 per cent of the country’s total produc-tion.

The state also produces more than afifth of India’s total iron ore production, which is around 220 MT annually. Ofthis, about 80 per cent comes from Bel-lary-Hospet region at about 40 million

tonnes per annum, Tumkur and Chi-tradurga districts meet rest of the re-quirements. PTI

After repairs, Madiwalaunderpass to reopen today

Bangalore Beat Bureau

Bangalore: Commuters had to battlehuge traffic jams in and around Madiwalathis morning after the underpass con-necting the city to Hosur road was closedfor some repair work.

Traffic jams stretched up to the DairyCircle. The road, mainly used by techiesand other workers, witnessed bumper-to-bumper traffic. Traffic police had atough time controlling the vehicularmovement.

The underpass was closed on Saturdayas the metal junction which covered thedrain which received all the rain wasdamaged.

Traffic jams and resulting problemsto the commuters could have been avoid-ed if the BBMP had foreseen the problemand taken up the repairs earlier. Theproblem has now got bigger as the metalrods covering the drains are damagedalong with the concrete around it. Theheavy flow of traffic through the mainjunction has damaged the rods, authoritiestold Bangalore Beat.

The underpass cut down commutingtime and distance by a large amount.Earlier all the vehicles moving towardsHosur Road had to go via St John’s Hos-pital, Water Tank and take a right U-turn at Krupanidhi College and passthrough the Madiwala market to reachHosur Road. Today, too, the traffic policewere diverting the traffic through theright turn at the Water Tank signal forvehicles coming from the centre of thecity.

The BBMP has corrected the problemnow and the road is expected to open bythis evening. Madiwala traffic inspectorLakshminarayan told Bangalore Beat:“We closed the underpass on Saturdayand had diverted all the traffic. But wehad allowed two-wheelers above the un-

der pass via Ayyappa temple. The problem was due to the metal

angle which got damaged due to contin-uous flow of vehicles.

BBMP thought of just welding themetal angle, but that was not enough asthe metal angle had got dented and dam-

aged the concrete too. BBMP has set up the metal angle on

fresh concrete and most of the work isover.

Only the concrete had been left forcuring. Once that is over we will allowthe passage of vehicles as earlier.”

We saw the ugly side of cricket: DhoniLondon: Frustrated after rain interrup-tions forced a tie in the fourth ODIagainst England, Indian captain Ma-hendra Singh Dhoni said the “ugly sideof cricket” came to fore in the match asthe side which had the upperhand “did-n’t want to play.”Sunday’s tie gave England the five-match series after the first game waswashed out and the hosts won the nexttwo.India had set England a formidable tar-get of 281 in Sunday’s match beforerain interruptions forced a tie with thehosts at the Duckworth-Lewis par scoreof 270 for eight.“We just saw the ugly side of cricket.Whichever team has the upper hand, doesn’t want to play. Whichever teamis not on winning side, will stick aroundand even play football. That’s whatpeople do and that’s what both sidesdid,” Dhoni said after the match. There were as many as three interrup-tions – first when England were upand second when the Indians wereahead on the Duckworth-Lewis rule. The intervening showers did cease 10minutes after the proceedings wereended but the rules didn’t permit thegame to be played under lights.“If you have a day game, you need dif-ferent guidelines and principles to fol-low. If you put it under lights, it doesn’tlook nice,” he said.Dhoni said some of the Indian playerswere confused about the result.“Some of the guys were confused. Somethought we had won it. Most of usthought it was a passing shower andwe would be able to get back on thefield,” said Dhoni.“Once inside the dressing room, wesaw the final sheet of paper. After look-ing at it, it was apparent it was a tieand none of the side had won thegame,” he added.Expressing his frustration with the in-terruptions, which robbed his side of awin in the series, Dhoni said, “This isnot the first time. We were close towinning the first game also. But as I

said, you can’t control the weather.”Dhoni’s batting was quite refreshingas was the knock of Suresh Raina who

top-scored with 84 runs.“We got off to a good start. Openersdid well. When I came in, we wanted

to make sure we play a number ofovers.“We didn’t have a target in mind. We

wanted to try and rotate the strike. Notto play shots which were risky and getcloser to the 40-over mark. In the last10 overs, we were able to get 110 runswhich really made a difference.”For the second game running, Indiadid well in batting powerplay. In thelast game at the Oval, they made 51runs from five overs and here at theLord’s, they plundered 58.“It has been good in the last two games. It’s important not to look for 60 runs infive overs. You look at 40 runs as abenchmark. If you have explosive pow-er, the last three overs can really makea difference. You can even get 50 runs. But it’s important not to aim too high,”Dhoni said. There was a feeling that with so muchon his plate, Dhoni was better off ingiving the keeping responsibility toParthiv Patel.“I am not a very good fielder. I lovefielding on the boundary. But you can’tlead the side from there. So that option(of letting Patel keep) is not there rightnow.”Dhoni said it would be India’s aim towin the final game at Cardiff on Fri-day.“Every game is important. Every gameis an international game. It’s importantto get the most out of it. It wouldn’t bebad to get a victory finally in the wholeof series.”England will visit India next monthand after the encouraging show by afew youngsters, speculation is rife aboutthe seniors retaining their spots.“Quite a few players would be fit bythen. We then may not have a verygood fielding side. But then groundsin India are small and there is not muchopportunity for batters to take singlesor twos.“You have to see which all players areavailable. It becomes difficult whensenior players are available. It’s toughfor the youngsters but (this tour) hasbeen a good grooming period for them. When the time comes, they could bearound for 5-10 years.” PTI

It was a fair result: Cook

London: India might be feelinghard-done by the weather godsbut England skipper AlastairCook said the tie forced by raininterruptions in the fourth ODIhere was a fair result.

Cook was a relieved man afterthe tie allowed his side to clinchthe five-match series by takingan unassailable 2-0 lead hereyesterday.

England were 270 for eightwhen the third and final rain in-tervention forced the match toend in a tie under the Duck-worth-Lewis rule.

“It’s human. When you’reahead of the game and get to gooff, you’re obviously going to behappier than the other team.

It was quite clear when wecame off the first time we wantedto go back because we were be-hind,” Cook told reporters in thepost-match press conference.

“When we came off secondtime, when we were ahead, ifwe are all being honest we wouldhave quite liked it to have rainedfor another hour and we wouldn’thave had the last few overs,” hesaid.

“We ended up having to batfor the weather and with Duck-worth-Lewis ball by ball, it wasan extremely tough situation forboth the sides. I think it probablywas a fair result,” he added.

Cook lauded Ravi Bopara forhis 96-run knock that held theEngland innings.

“The way Ravi (Bopara), TimBresnan and Graeme Swann heldtheir nerves and got us almostover the line, and to win the se-ries because of it, makes us de-lighted.”

Bopara, who was caught on

the edge of the midwicket fenceby Ravindra Jadeja, though wasdisappointed with the result.

“It’s extremely disappointingthat we didn’t end up winning. Inever quite knew when to ac-celerate with the weather andbig black clouds lurking roundthe back there,” he said.

“But after Swanny got out, Iwasn’t thinking of just knockingit about – in case we left toomuch or ourselves – so I tookon the shot, and it didn’t comeoff.

“The fielder looked very casualat one stage and I thought ‘wellit’s gone over him then’. But hejust back-tracked and when itwas about 15 yards away fromhim, I knew he’s going to get ahand to this, so let’s hope heputs it down,” he added.

The batsman was more dis-appointed that he couldn’t winthe game for England than miss-ing out on his maiden ODI cen-tury.

“I’m just down that I didn’tfinish the game. I want to wingames for England, not tie gamesfor England.”

Stuart Broad was injured whilebowling the final over and it waslater learnt that he had strainedthe upper tricep of his bowlingarm. But the bowler was paddedup to bat if required.

“We don’t know how bad isthe injury. He will go for a scantonight or tomorrow and we’llsee how it settles down over thenext 24-48 hours.

“He was padded up, ready togo. I’m not sure how effectivehe would have been but with afew pain-killers he might havebeen alright.” PTI

Clinton: Fight against terroris a long‑term struggle

New York: The US and othernations of the world face a long-term struggle against the “mur-derous ideology” of terrorismthat has claimed innocent livesfrom London to Mumbai, andhave to ensure that terrorists aremade “irrelevant”, Secretary ofState Hillary Clinton said here.

Addressing a gathering at a‘Voices of September 11th’ event,Clinton said even though the UShas “thankfully” not witnessedanother terror attack following9/11, terrorists continue to takelives in countries across theworld.

“Even though the UnitedStates, thankfully, has not ex-perienced another attack since9/11, London has, Madrid has,Mumbai has, Islamabad has,Jakarta, Bali ? other places con-tinue to be attacked.

“We do have to recognise that

we are engaged in a long-termstruggle to face down and defeatthe murderous ideology that con-tinues to incite violence aroundthe world,” she said.

Clinton said America’s fightagainst terrorism did not endwith Osama bin Laden’s deathand the country will not restuntil all those who were part ofplanning and facilitating the at-tacks are “similarly brought tojustice”.

“I can tell you it was a partic-ular satisfaction for me, as a for-mer senator of New York, to bein the team in the Obama Ad-ministration that made sure binLaden was brought to justice”.

The US will use every tool inits arsenal, including never giv-ing up its right to use militaryforce, to capture and kill terroristsand disrupt cells and conspira-cies, she said.

“We do not just want to cap-ture and kill terrorist leaders. We want to make them irrele-vant. We want to prevent themfrom attracting new recruits. Wewant to end the attraction theyhave for young people,” sheadded.

US diplomats are out in thefield and in cyberspace exposingal-Qaeda’s hypocrisy and bru-tality and the enormous toll ithas inflicted on Muslims, Clintonsaid. These violent extremistsare not representing any religion, but are representing “evil andnihilism,” and they need to bestopped by all people, she said.

The state department is work-ing with a coalition of other na-tions to choke off the illicit fi-nancing networks that pay forterrorist training camps, propa-ganda and operations.

The US is helping build ca-

pacities of other nations to dealwith terrorist threats, besidestraining thousands of police andanti-terrorism officials across theglobe.

“We are creating new forumsfor nations to deepen our coun-terterrorism cooperation”.

Progress has been made butthe terror threats in New Yorkand Washington in the run upto the 9/11 anniversary are “onemore reminder that we still facedanger and we have to stay vig-ilant”.

“We have to keep our eye onwhat we are fighting against, but we also have to rememberwhat we are fighting for”.

Clinton had earlier in the dayvisited the 9/11 Memorial at theWorld Trade Centre site, termingit a place that helps people toreflect, remember and be closeto their loved ones. PTI

Mysore University celebrates freshersʼ dayMysore: Mysore university atManasgangotri conducted theirfreshers day program today. Thechief guests for the function wereProfessor S N Hegde, former vicechancellor of Mysore university;Professor V G Talwar, vice chan-cellor of Mysore university; Pro-fessor Lakappa Gowda, formervice chancellor of Hampi uni-versity.

Professor Hegde spoke on theoccasion, saying “Today, out ofevery hundred youth only 13-14% of them are opting for uni-versity courses. By the year 2030,this ratio should come up to 30%or at the very least 25%. Theplan for the year 2012 is that theuniversity is getting a grant of46 crore rupees. This will allowthe university to progress inmany ways. The education sys-tem in the country is vast withmore than 350 universities and

50,000 colleges, the problem isthat even though there are a lotof jobs, people are not ready totake up these jobs.

1.6 million jobs are being cre-ated in the year 2011.

They are mainly focused inthe areas of healthcare, con-struction, hospitality, education, media, vocational training etc.But people are thinking only ofIT jobs. The problem is that grad-uates do not have employmentability.

Their lack of skills is like hav-ing a license without a gun. Asof now the post graduate pro-gram is of 2 years length but infuture this may become 3 years.Indian universities should followthe format of universities of othercountries where everything isnot learnt from the lecturers. Inthese countries, the teaching isless but the experience of the

students is vast. In future, this university

should become more innovative.Last year at the Global Invest-ment Meet, the discussion wasabout 12 mega industries whichare coming up. These will createlarge number of jobs. A personwho has life skills can surviveanywhere.

The main skills that are re-quired are problem solving, lead-ership abilities, teamwork, com-munication skills and a mindsetfor learning and creativity.

Better technologies are emerging that canprotect intellectual property and preventcounterfeiting and piracy, says DaveLow, head of the Intellectual Property Or-ganisation Hub, UK.

His views are supported by Praful Naik, chief sci-entific officer, Bilcare Ltd, Jim Simmons, seniormanager for brand protection, Qualcomm, andToby Simon, president and CEO, Synergia Foun-dation.

“Whatever may be the product, owners nowwant to protect them and earn revenues. In the UK,stringent laws protected intellectual property(IP). But they were not applicable to software, serv-ices and products. The Digital Economy Act (DEA)of 2010 was a defining act that changed it all. It de-fined software, services and products by protect-ing brands. The owners feel justified now,” saysLow.

Owners of these industries, who were scaredabout protection to their products, now feel jus-tified. Now the most advanced anti-counterfeitinglabelling, tracking and tracing technologies are inplace,” he says.

Praful Naik says, “Counterfeiters could beahead in duplicating products and hitting the mar-kets earlier to grab the markets by fooling cus-tomers. They could even be tampering with theoriginal technology to claim it as their own. Stillit helps all if we can trace who is doing it and howthey are engaged in counterfeiting activities.Though original owners could be at a loss, the bestoption also seems to be to surpass the counter-feiters without giving them a hint.”

He says, “Our solutions can be used to protectmost products with unique codes. Once a copyrightviolation is detected, a change in production linecan be opted for. A good number of revelationshave been made and solutions suggested to ourclients.”

Jim Simmons says, “According to our study con-ducted in 2009-2010, most copyright violations oc-cur in China, Brazil, India, Malaysia, Paraguay andVietnam. The reasons are well known; the skilledlabour is cheap and unemployment levels are high. The best way to prevent these violations is to optfor advanced technologies. At Qualcomm, wehave a separate counterfeiting prevention technicalteam.”

Toby Simon said, “The technology we have istrack and trace one. It is applicable for any prod-uct. Most of the companies which have opted forthe technology are from the pharmaceutical in-dustry.”

“The technology works like this: The softwaregenerates a random number that is stuck orprinted on the drug packing cover. The productnumber is then updated at our main server. Whena consumer buys this product, he can check its au-thenticity by typing down the number on the pack-et to the server. The reply would contain all detailsconcerning the product. This will help not just theowner, but also the manufacturer.”

Gene behindlong‑term back

pain ʻdiscoveredʼLondon: British scientists have discovered a“rogue gene” which they claim is responsible forlong-term back pain, a key breakthrough that maysoon pave the way for new and effective treatmentfor the condition.

A team at Cambridge University has identifiedthe gene, called HCN2, which it says will open upthe possibility of new drugs to block the proteinproduced by the gene, the ‘Daily Express’ report-ed.

For their study, the scientists removed theHCN2 gene from pain-sensitive nerves in mice. Bymeasuring speed that the mice withdrew from dif-ferent types of painful stimuli, they concluded thatdeleting the HCN2 gene abolished pain.

However, they found that deleting HCN2 did notaffect normal acute pain – which occurs suddenly, for example when biting one’s tongue – a factorthey said was important since this type of pain actsas a useful warning signal to the body.

Chronic pain comes in two main varieties andis an enormous health burden worldwide. In-flammatory pain occurs when a persistent injury, such as a burn, results in very sensitive nerve end-ings and increased pain. Neuropathic pain occurswhen nerves are damaged, causing ongoing pain. This type of chronic pain is often lifelong, say thescientists.

Lead author Professor Peter McNaughton said:“Individuals suffering from neuropathic pain of-ten have little or no respite because of the lack ofeffective medications. Our research lays thegroundwork for development of new drugs to treatchronic pain by blocking HCN2.

“Many genes play a critical role in pain sensa-tion, but in most cases interfering with them sim-ply abolishes all pain, or even all sensation. What is exciting about the work on the HCN2 geneis that removing it eliminates neuropathic painwithout affecting normal acute pain.

“This finding could be very valuable clinicallybecause normal pain sensation is essential foravoiding accidental damage,” he said.

The findings have been published in the ‘Sci-ence’ journal. PTI

Computers will be 1000 times fasterLondon: Get ready for the next-generation com-puters and smartphones that are up to 1,000 timesfaster than the systems you use today.

Computer maker IBM is developing “sky-scraper” computers using huge sandwiches of sil-icon chips by sticking layer after layer of chips cov-ered with tiny components together.

The process, for which IBM has roped in gluemaker 3M, will make PCs and smartphones up to1,000 times faster than the existing ones and areexpected to be available in market as early as 2013.

3M currently makes heat resistant glues, ad-hesives used in the aerospace industry and stickytapes, but the hi-tech glues created for IBM couldactually be the key step towards making the nextevolutionary leap in computing, the Daily Mail re-ported.

The attempts at piling chips vertically – knownas 3D packaging – has so far been suffering fromoverheating. But, the new glues could potential-ly conduct heat through a stack of densely-packed chips and away from logic circuits thatcould be burnt out by the heat.

The research aims to create “stacks” of up to 100layers of silicon, the report said.

Mike Bowman, marketing manager for 3M, said:“This material fits underneath computer chipswhen they’re attached to printed circuit boards -- the unique part of what we’re doing is that ourglue conducts heat out to the edge of the sand-

wich.“Our glue will spread heat more evenly through

the chip. With conventional chips, with just one

or two layers, but once you’re stacking chips, theproblem can become very severe.”

According to the researchers, a ball of advancedadhesive is placed between layers of chips, al-lowing up to 100 chips to be stacked without over-heating.

“Today’s chips including those containing 3Dtransistors are in fact 2D chips that are still veryflat structures,” Bernie Meyerson, a vice presidentof IBM Research, said in a statement.

So far, most increases in computing power havebeen driven by scientific breakthroughs that al-low chip makers to etch ever-smaller circuits ontoever-smaller chip wafers. The new ‘3D’ approachcould accelerate gadgets such as tablet comput-ers to unheard-of new speeds.

“Our scientists are aiming to develop materi-als that will allow us to package tremendousamounts of computing power into a new form fac-tor – a silicon skyscraper,” said Meyerson.

“We believe we can advance this, and create anew class of semiconductors – faster, with low-er power usage, ideal for tablets and smart-phones.”

Other 3M glues are used in hi-tech industriessuch as solar power, as well as in markedly low-er-tech environments such as carpentry. Both com-panies did not speculate on a release date for thenew technology, but insiders said such versionscould be on the market as early as 2013. PTI

Helicopter parentsmake kids obese

London: “Helicopter parents”who hover over their children’severy move leave them at risk ofobesity by preventing healthyplay, a new study has claimed.

The North Carolina State Uni-versity study, which looked atfamilies in parks, found thatfussy parents who show toomuch concern while their chil-dren are playing actually causethem to be less active.

“Helicopter parents” often in-terrupted their children’s spon-taneous play, making them moresedentary, the researchers found.

Lead researcher Dr Jason Bo-carro said: “It’s a catch-22 for to-day’s parents, unfortunately. Many parents are worried aboutthe safety of their children, sothey tend to hover. The worry ishovering is keeping kids fromrunning around and playing withtheir friends and neighbours, and instead maybe sitting infront of the computer or televi-sion,” Dr Bocarro said.

The researchers studied 20parks in the US and classified ifchildren were “sedentary, mod-erately active or vigorously active”while playing.

The study, to be published inthe American Journal for Pre-ventive Medicine, found kidswith hovering parents were oftenstopped from engaging in vigor-ous activity. Based on the find-ings, the researchers hope toprovide guidance to designers ofpublic parks – like providingseat where parents can sit andwatch their children play.

Dr Bocarro said: “We chose tostudy parks because they havebeen identified by studies as crit-ical spaces within communitiesto help children stay active.

“They are free and accessibleand provide an opportunity to en-gage under-served and lower-income populations, whom datahave shown have a higher likeli-hood of being classified as inac-tive and obese,” he said. PTI

Chemical essential for life in meteoritesLondon: Scientists have found a key chemical essentialfor life from meteorite fragments, a discovery they saystrengthens the theory that life on Earth has come fromouter space.

Researchers from the University of Leeds havefound meteorite fragments contain a precursor to a keychemical that allows biological cells to capture ener-gy from their surroundings.

They believe that debris from meteorites that hit theEarth billions of years ago may have combined withslightly acidic water on the planet to produce earlyforms of the compound.

This would then have allowed the first forms of cel-lular life to form and to use energy from their sur-roundings, the Daily Telegraph reported.

Astrobiologist Dr Terry Kee, who led the research, said: “There is strong scientific evidence that chemi-cals essential to life have been found in interstellar ma-terial such as meteorites,”

“Meteorites are fragments of some of the oldest ma-terials in our solar system, and their composition can

hold clues as to the appearance and environment ofour own planet and what lived on it billions of yearsago.”

According to the researchers, the high reactivity ofpyrophosphate suggests that it fostered early chemi-cal reactions in the acidic, warm pools that sur-

rounded volcanoes.“The application of acidic water and heat to the me-

teorites mimics the conditions of ancient planetearth’s surface,” said Dr Kee.

“If corroded by acid rain, the chemical pyrophos-phate would be released from the meteorite into theearth itself.

This may suggest the origins of chemical cycles andcell formation on the early earth.”

However, the researchers distanced themselvesfrom NASA scientist Richard Hoover, who claimed tohave discovered extraterrestrial microfossils in a col-lection of meteorites three times in the last 14 years.

Dr Kee said: “We’re not attempting to prove the ex-istence of extraterrestrial life forms as such; we are con-centrating upon the origins of earth’s chemicalprocesses, and why they evolved into life forms as theydid. “We believe that life did not evolve independently. There is a very good chance that extraterrestrial ma-terials provided the building blocks of life on earth.”PTI

London: Soon-to-be mothers pleasenote: You can cut the chances of yourbaby developing food allergies by eat-ing a diet rich in oily fish and nuts, scientists say.

Researchers from France’s NationalAgricultural Research Institute (INRA)discovered that omega-3 fatty acids –found in fish like salmon, mackereland tuna, as well as walnuts, pumpkinseeds and linseeds – prompt the gutto develop in a way that boosts theimmune system.

The researchers found that whenmothers-to-be ate a diet high in a par-ticular group of polyunsaturated fattyacids (PUFAs), the gut walls of theiroffspring were more permeable.

This allowed more broken downfood substances and germs to passinto the bloodstream, triggering thebaby’s immune system to produceantibodies, the Daily Telegraph re-ported.

Dr Gaelle Boudry, from the INRA,explained: “Our study identifies thata certain group of polyunsaturatedfatty acids causes a change in how a

baby’s gut develops, which in turnmight change how the gut immunesystem develops.

“The end result is that the baby’simmune system may develop and ma-

ture faster – leading to better immunefunction and less likelihood of suf-fering allergies.”

According to the researchers, foodallergy is a growing problem now, with the number of related hospitaladmissions in Britain rising six-foldsince 1990.

A recent study from the Isle ofWight found that one in 20 childrendid have an allergy. It also found evi-dence that the real incidence wasgrowing.

Allergy experts do not really knowwhat is behind the rise. One theory isthe “hygiene hypothesis” – that ashomes have become cleaner, chil-dren’s immune systems now haveless chance to develop fully.

More and more attention is alsobeing paid to the role of early exposureto foods, both in the first years of lifeand in the womb.

Dr Boudry said: “There is intenseresearch interest in maternal diet dur-ing pregnancy. In the Western diet, the group of polyunsaturated fattyacids that we have shown to help gut

function are actually disappearing –our dietary intake of fish and nut oilsis being replaced by corn oils whichcontain a different kind of fatty acid.”

Their research, published in TheJournal of Physiology, added to evi-dence that consuming such fatty acidsin pregnancy was beneficial for babies, she claimed.

“Other studies have found that adiet containing fish or walnut oil dur-ing pregnancy may make your babysmarter – our research adds to this, suggesting such supplements also ac-celerate the development of a healthyimmune system to ward off food al-lergies.”

She emphasised that their studywas in pigs, but the research groupbelieve the animal’s intestine is an“excellent model of the human gut”.

In the study, pregnant and lactatingsows were given a dietary supple-mentation of linseed oil. The perme-ability of their offsprings’ intestinalwalls was than compared with thatof piglets from sows not given thesupplement. PTI

British policerescue slaves

from travellersʼ site

London: British police raided a travellers’site to rescue 24 men they said had beenheld as slaves and forced to live in squalor, some for up to 15 years.

More than 200 officers from BedfordshirePolice entered the Green Acres caravan sitein Leighton Buzzard, northwest of Londonyesterday, and arrested four men and onewoman, all residents on the site, on suspi-cion of slavery offences.

Police said the freed men were mostlyEnglish, with some of eastern Europeanorigin. Detectives said they were all vul-nerable – either homeless or alcoholics –and had been recruited by “gangmasters”offering money, the BBC reported.

Bedfordshire Police force had conducteda long-running investigation into suggestionsthat the men were being held against theirwill in poor conditions and forced to workfor no pay.

“The men we found at the site were in apoor state of physical health and the con-ditions they were living in were shockinglyfilthy and cramped,” said Detective ChiefInspector Sean O’Neil, from the Bedfordshireand Hertfordshire major crime unit.

“We believe that some of them had beenliving and working there in a state of virtualslavery, some for just a few weeks andothers for up to 15 years.”

He added: “They’re recruited and told ifyou come here we’ll pay you – 80 ( 125, 95euros) a day, we’ll look after you give youboard and lodgings.

“But when they get here, their hair iscut off them, they’re kept in in some cases(in) horseboxes, dog kennels and old cara-vans, made to work for no money, givenvery, very small amounts of food.

“That’s the worst case. Some are treateda little bit better, but they were told theycould not leave and if they did they wouldbe beaten up and attacked.

“But in fact some people did leave andtold us what was going on and when welooked back since 2008 we were aware of28 people who had made similar accusa-tions.”

The rescued men have been taken to amedical centre.

“Some of these people have come offcovered in excrement and dirty clothingbecause that was all they were allowed tolive in,” O’Neil told BBC television.

“After being cared for, given food andfresh clothing, we hope to then interviewthem. That in itself will take a long timebecause these people are institutionalised.

“One person we know has been here 15years – so to him this is normal life.” AFP

Man arrested in LA after false

bomb alertLos Angeles: A man has been arrested inLos Angeles for making terror threats andtriggering a false bomb alert aboard a bus, officials said as the United States com-memorated the 10th anniversary of 9/11.

Eugenio Parades boarded a city bus lateon Saturday, holding a bag with “wires ex-posed that looked like (an explosive) device,”said Los Angeles County Sheriff’s DeputyTony Moore yesterday.

The 62-year-old “was making threats to-ward the driver,” he added without providingfurther details.

According to a bus passenger, green andgray wires were protruding from the bag,to which an object resembling a countdowndevice was attached.

The bus was evacuated and it took au-thorities four hours to determine that thebag was harmless.

Paredes was arrested at the site on sus-picion of making a terrorist threat and pos-sessing a hoax device, Sheriff’s DeputyGuillermina Saldana said.

Meanwhile, officials shut down part of aterminal and the main access road at theKansas City, Missouri airport yesterday afterscreeners spotted a suspicious item in acarry-on bag. The bag’s owner was “unco-operative,” prompting officials to detainhim and call in the bomb squad, airportspokesman Joe McBride told AFP.

“The devices have been checked out andthere’s no explosives, so at this point we’reawaiting the all-clear,” McBride said.

In several ceremonies held under tightsecurity, the United States was commemo-rating the 10th anniversary of the September11 attacks as officials warned of a new ter-rorism threat. Washington’s Dulles Airportwas partially evacuated for four hours onthe eve of the anniversary on Saturday aftera suspicious object was found. AP

Exercise helpsstem cells to

become bonesWashington: Here’s yet anotherreason why should should ex-ercise regularly – working outtriggers influential stem cells tobecome bone, instead of fat, saysa new study.

Researchers at McMaster Uni-versity, who carried out thestudy, has claimed that this alsohelps in improving the overallhealth of a person by boostingthe body’s capacity to makeblood.

The body’s mesenchymal stemcells are most likely to becomefat or bone, depending on whichpath they follow.

Using treadmill-conditionedmice, the researchers haveshown that aerobic exercise trig-gers those cells to become bonemore often than fat. The miceran less than an hour, threetimes a week, enough time tohave a significant impact ontheir blood production.

In sedentary mice, the samestem cells were more likely tobecome fat, impairing blood pro-duction in the marrow cavitiesof bones. “The interesting thingwas that a modest exercise pro-gram was able to significantlyincrease blood cells in the mar-row and in circulation. Whatwe’re suggesting is that exerciseis a potent stimulus – enough

of a stimulus to actually triggera switch in the mesenchymalstem cells,” the researchers said.

The composition of cells inthe bone marrow cavity has animportant influence on the pro-ductivity of blood stem cells.

In ideal conditions, blood stemcells create healthy blood thatboosts the immune system, per-mits the efficient uptake of oxy-gen, and improves the ability toclot wounds.

Bone cells improve the climatefor blood stem cells to makeblood. But when fat cells startto fill the bone marrow cavity, blood stem cells become lessproductive and conditions suchas anemia can result.

The findings, published in the‘Journal of the Federation ofAmerican Societies for Experi-mental Biology’, add to the grow-ing list of established benefitsof exercise, and suggest novelnon-medicinal treatments forblood-related disorders may bein the future, say the researchers.

“Some of the impact of exer-cise is comparable to what wesee with pharmaceutical inter-vention. Exercise has the abilityto impact stem cell biology. It has the ability to influencehow they differentiate,” theysaid. PTI

Magnets can help extract truth: ScientistsLondon: Scientists have foundthat magnetic interference withthe brain makes it impossible tolie, a discovery they say couldbe the most effective way to ex-tract information from crime sus-pects unwilling to tell the truth.

Estonian researchers foundthat stimulating part of the frontbrain with magnets alters thesimplicity of lying.

The team found that whenmagnets were applied to eitherthe right or left side of the dor-solateral prefrontal cortex, founddirectly behind the forehead, itmakes a person to lie or tell thetruth, depending on which sidewas stimulated.

However, magnetic interfer-ence directed at another part ofthe brain, the parietal lobe, wasfound to have no impact on thepeople’s decision-making, theresearchers said.

“Spontaneous choice to liemore or less can be influencedby brain stimulation,” study re-searchers Inga Karton and TalisBachmann were quoted as sayingby the Daily Mail.

For their study, published inthe journal Behavioural BrainResearch, the researchers re-cruited a small group of 16 vol-

unteers who were given coloureddisks.

Then, half of them were givenmagnetic stimulation on the rightside of their prefrontal cortex, half on the left.

They then had two options:to lie about what colour theirdisks were, or tell the truth.

Results showed that the vol-unteers who had their left DPCstimulated lied more often, whilethe ones with the right DPC stim-ulated were more likely to tellthe truth.

The experiment was repeatedwhile a different brain region --the parietal lobe --was stimulatedand it produced no effect, theresearchers said.

Last year, scientists at theMassachusetts Institute of Tech-nology had found that magnetscan also be used to disrupt thebrain’s “moral compass”.

Obama: US will neverwage war against IslamWashington: Ten years after the USlaunched war against terrorism, in par-ticular those of al Qaeda and the Taliban,President Barack Obama has said Amer-ica was not and never would be at warwith Islam or any other religion.

“These past 10 years underscore thebonds between all Americans. We havenot succumbed to suspicion and mis-trust. After 9/11, President (George)Bush made clear what we reaffirm today:the United States will never wage waragainst Islam or any religion. Immigrantscome here from all parts of the globe,”Obama said.

“In the biggest cities and the smallesttowns, in our schools and workplaces, you still see people of every conceivablerace, religion and ethnicity – all of thempledging allegiance to one flag; all ofthem reaching for the same Americandream – e pluribus unum, out of many,we are one,” Obama said.

Obama said these 10 years haveshown that Americans hold fast to theirfreedoms. “Yes, we are more vigilantagainst those who threaten us, andthere are inconveniences that comewith our common defense,” he said.

“Debates – about war and peace;about security and civil liberties – haveoften been fierce. But it is precisely therigor of these debates, and our abilityto resolve them in a way that honorsour values, that is a measure of ourstrength,” Obama said in his speech atthe Kennedy Center here, capping hisday-long 9/11 memorial events that tookhim to the Ground Zero in New York,Shanksvile in Pennsylvania and thePentagon.

“Meanwhile, our open markets stillprovide innovators with the chance tocreate, our citizens are still free to speak

their minds, and our souls are still en-riched in our churches and temples, our synagogues and mosques,” the USPresident said, adding that these past10 years tell a story of resilience.

“The Pentagon is repaired, and filledwith patriots working in common pur-pose. Shanksville is the scene of friend-ships forged between residents of thattown, and families who lost loved onesthere,” he said.

“New York remains a vibrant capitalof the arts and industry, fashion andcommerce. Where the World Trade Cen-ter once stood, the sun glistens off anew tower that reaches toward the sky.

“Our people still work in skyscrapers. Our stadiums are filled with fans, andour parks full of children playing ball.

Our airports hum with travel, andour buses and subways take millions

where they need to go.“Families sit down to Sunday dinner,

and students prepare for school. Thisland pulses with the optimism of thosewho set out for distant shores, and thecourage of those who died for humanfreedom,” Obama said.

He said when decades from now,Americans will visit the memorials tothose who were lost on 9/11, they willrun their fingers over the places wherethe names of those we loved are carvedinto marble and stone, and wonder atthe lives they led. “Standing before thewhite headstones in Arlington, and inpeaceful cemeteries and small-townsquares in every corner of our country, they will pay respects to those lost inAfghanistan and Iraq. They will see thenames of the fallen on bridges and stat-ues; at gardens and schools,” he said.

Agree or not, managershave bigger brains

Washington: Staffersagree or not, managersdo have bigger brains, says a new study.

An international teamhas carried out the studyand found that manag-ing other people at worktriggers structuralchanges in the brain, protecting its memoryand learning centre wellinto old age.

Researchers, led bythe University of NewSouth Wales, have, infact, for the first time, identified a clear linkbetween managerial experiencethroughout a person’s workinglife and the integrity and largersize of one’s hippocampus – thebrain’s area responsible for learn-ing and memory – at 80.

“We found a clear relationshipbetween the number of employ-

ees a person may have super-vised or been responsible forand the size of the hippocam-pus,” said Dr Michael Valen-zuela, who led the team.

“This could be linked to theunique mental demands of man-aging people, which requires

continuous problem solv-ing, short term memoryand a lot of emotionalintelligence, such as theability to put yourself inanother person’s shoes.Over time this couldtranslate into the struc-tural brain changes weobserved,” he added.

Using MRI imagery ina cohort of 75-92 year-olds, the researchersfound larger hippocam-pal volumes in those withmanagerial experiencecompared to those with-out, even after account-

ing for any of a number of alter-native explanations.

While many male participantsfollowed traditional managementcareer paths, the effect was alsoseen in women who had takenon managerial roles in nursingor teaching, for example. PTI

Manʼs earliest ancestor found?

London: Palaeontologists have unearthed the remainsof a primitive ape-like creature which they believecould be the man’s earliest ancestor that lived almosttwo million years ago.

The hominin, named Australopithecus sediba, wasdiscovered in a cave in South Africa and has beendubbed the “missing link” between apes and hu-mans.

Now new details about its brain, pelvis, hands andfeet made it clear that our ancient relative displayedboth primitive characteristics as well as more modern,human-like traits, the Daily Mail reported.

Because of these features, scientists suspect thehominin is the best candidate for an ancestor to theHomo genus, the researchers said.

“The many advanced features found in the brainand body, along with the earlier date, make it possiblythe best candidate ancestor for our genus -- the genusHomo -- more so than previous discoveries, such asHomo habilis (the earliest known human),” said DrLee Berger, of Witwatersrand University in Johannes-burg, who led the project.

According to five new papers published in thejournal Science, Au. sediba, walked on two legs andhad hips similar to modern humans, but still hadsome primitive fea-tures, such as longerarms and a smallerbrain.

It had the mostcomplete hands everdescribed in an earlyhominin, one of themore completepelvises ever discov-ered and brand newpieces of the footand ankle.

The age of these fossils has been calculated toabout 1.977 million years which pre-dates the earliestappearances of Homo-specific traits in the fossilrecord. Until now, fossils dated to 1.9 million yearsago – and mostly attributed to Homo habilis andHomo rudolfensis – have been considered ancestralto Homo erectus, the earliest undisputed human an-cestor. Au. sediba hit headlines last year after a scien-tist’s nine-year-old son found the partial skeleton of a60-pound 10 to 13-year-old male during a dig at a siteknown as Malapa.

Further exploration led to the discovery of the re-mains for an adult female in her late 20s or early 30sweighing around 73 pounds.

Both the female and the young male were identifiedas being members of the new Australopithecus species, with sediba meaning “wellspring”.

Since then, fossils of at least 25 animals, includingsabre-toothed cats, a wildcat, a brown hyena, a wilddog and a horse, were also found in the cave, whichresearchers believe acted like a “death trap” for indi-viduals seeking water.
