ROYAL AUSTRALIAN AIR FORCE.CONDITIONS OF SERVICE FOR MEDICAL OFFICER.

Appointment.

THE appointment will in the first instance be to a unitin Victoria. Applicants must be British subjects ofpure European descent, and not more than 35 years of ageat date of appointment. Preference will be given to one whohas had resident hospital experience.

General. The Air Force offers to medical men a life both attractiveand interesting. The rates of pay and allowances are good,

and a new field of scientific interest is opened up by themanifold problems which the circumstances of aviationproduce. Questions connected with the physical and mentalfitness for, and re- action to, the varied conditions under whichflying personnel perform their duties, provide interestingproblems for the man whose inclinations tend towardsresearch. Visual problems alone have opened up an entirelynew field of research, as a result of the speed now attained byaeroplanes. It is realized that, in order to obtain that closeliaison which is necessary between doctors and the pilotsunder their medical charge, officers in the Medical Branchmust undergo continued and practical experience in flight, andthey are, therefore, expected to fly as passengers whenevercalled upon to do so. Where training facilities permit, thosewho show a special keenness for flying are permitted toqualify as pilots.

Rank. The successful candidate will be appointed ta a short service

commission of four years with the rank of Flight Lieutenantin the Medical Branch. The appointment will be on probationfor a period of twelve months and will be confirmed at theend of the period subject to a satisfactory report from theCommanding Officer and from the Director- General of MedicalServices.

Duties. The duties include the medical welfare of the personnel and

supervision of the general sanitation of a Royal AustralianAir Force Station. The duties also include medical attendanceon wives and families of personnel resident on the Stationand within two miles thereof. The duties are arranged so asto allow the medical officer, when the exigencies of the Servicepermit, to attend a public hospital in an honorary capacityfor the purpose of keeping in touch with the civil side of theprofession.

Pay.Normally the pay and allowances for the position would be
