Avalon Multis Esme Tunisian Scarf

Designed by Laura Krzak

Named after the beautiful Tunisian lace stitch designed by Robyn Chachula, this scarf is a great introduction to what Tunisian crochet can add to your skills set. Hopefully, this scarf will be the gateway to a further enjoyment of Tunisian crochet.

Skill Level: Intermediate Size Approx. 84” length x 5” width Materials Cascade Yarns® Avalon Multis; 50% Cotton / 50 % Acrylic; 100 g (3.5 oz) / 175 yds (160 m) 2 skein of color #314 (Blue & Green) Tunisian Crochet hook, size H/8 (5mm) or size needed to obtain gauge Yarn Needle

Blocked Gauge: In pattern, 21 sts and 12 rows = 4” Stitch Abbreviations Ch = Chain Stitch St(s) = Stitch(es) Lp(s) = Loop(s) St(s) = Stitch(es) Lp(s) = Loop(s) YO = Yarn Over Tss = Tunisian simple stitch Ch-Sp = Chain Space Working Rows in Tunisian Crochet: Tunisian crochet, like most traditional crochet, begins with a foundation chain. In traditional crochet, you work a row of stitches, and the row is then complete. At that point, you turn the work and move on to the next row. Tunisian crochet is different. With Tunisian crochet, each row is a two-step process, and you never have a need to turn the work.

The first part of the process, called the “Forward Row” or “Forward Pass,” is similar in some ways to casting on in knitting. When working this part of the row, you draw up a series of loops, which are all held on the hook until you complete the second part. The second part, call the “return,” has similarities to the technique of binding off in knitting. When working the return part of the row, you basically consolidate the loops, one (or more) loop(s) at a time (depending on pattern instructions), until only one loop is left on the hook. A row of Tunisian crochet is finished when there is only one loop remaining on the hook (this loop will be from the Yo drawn from the last two loops on the hook). This loop will now count as the first stitch of the next row. Special Stitches

Tunisian Simple Stitch (Tss) – Forward Pass:

Insert hook under vertical bar, from right to left, YO and

draw up a loop. At the very end of the row, insert hook

under two threads (like stitching into a turning chain at

the end of a row) and draw up a loop.

Tunisian Simple Stitch (Tss) – Return Pass:

YO and draw through loop closest to hook to start return. To complete a Tss, YO and draw through 2 loops on

hook.

Tunisian Shell:

For this pattern, the shell is created on the return pass by YO, then drawing through four loops on the hook.

Tunisian Bind Off (or finishing off work):

Insert hook under vertical bar. YO and pull through both loops on hook. Continue working down the row in

this manner, following how you would pick up loops in the Row 2 Forward Pass, until you get to the end of

the row. At the very end of the row, insert hook under two threads (like stitching into a turning chain) and

draw up a loop. Do a normal crochet bind off with that last loop.

Scarf

Ch 22

Row 1 – Forward Pass: Pull up Lp in 2nd Ch from hook and in each Ch across. Row 1 – Return Pass: YO, pull through 1 Lp on hook, *YO, pull through 2 Lps on hook, Ch 1, YO, pull through 4 Lps on hook (this gathers the next 3 sts, making a shell), Ch 1, YO, pull through 2 Lps on hook, repeat from * across to last st, YO, pull through 2 Lps on hook.

Row 2 – Forward Pass: (Lp on hook counts as first st) Tss in next st, * insert hook in next Ch-Sp and pull up a Lp, insert hook into top of shell and pull up a Lp, insert hook in next Ch-Sp and pull up a Lp, Tss in each of the next 2 sts, repeat from * across to last st, insert hook into chain picking up two bars of the chain and pull up a Lp. Row 2 – Return Pass: YO, pull through 1 Lp on hook, *YO, pull through 2 Lps on hook, Ch 1, YO, pull through 4 Lps on hook (this gathers the next 3 sts, making a shell), Ch 1, YO, pull through 2 Lps on hook, repeat from * across to last st, YO, pull through 2 Lps on hook. Repeat both passes of row 2 until scarf is desired width. Finishing: Finish scarf using the Tunisian Bind Off as described under special stitches. Fasten off, block flat to measurements, and then weave in all ends.
