Welcome to ESME Student Online The benefit from having students involved in teaching has been recognised by accrediting authorities around the world such as the UK General Medical Council (Tomorrow’s Doctors, 2011), and by AMEE in its ASPIRE-to-Excellence Awards. This AMEE Essential Skills in Medical Education (ESME) Student course has been designed to meet this need. AMEE have been delivering courses at medical education conferences around the world since 2005, and online since 2012. This course meets the need for student training in education as part of the undergraduate curriculum. It can also be scheduled as part of an elective or intercalated year in medical education. It is particularly relevant to students who are engaged with the education programme through serving on curriculum or other committees. The course has been adapted, with the help of an advisory group of students, from the successful ESME Online course. It aims to meet student needs without imposing an unrealistic workload. The award of the AMEE-ESME Student Certificate in Medical Education provides evidence of the participant’s interest in education and abilities as a teacher. This recognises the participant’s interest in the field and may be credited towards further studies leading to a higher degree in health professions education. Internationally, several institutions including Flinders University, University of Hong Kong, Liverpool University, Dundee University, University of Khartoum and Pontificia Universidad Catolica de Chile all accept the ESME Online Certificate as credit towards their own awards. A range of other online courses are also available from AMEE, including: ESME Online; ESME Leadership Online; and ESMEA Assessment Online. For further information please visit the AMEE website

This handbook has been designed to provide you with all the information you will need to take part in the course, and mirrors the information available on the website.

There is a checklist at the end by which you can make sure you have completed each step. The course is delivered over 12 weeks and has six modules:

1. What is expected of the student as a teacher? 2. What should medical students learn? 3. How can learning be organised in the curriculum? 4. How can students learn more effectively? Part 1 5. How can students learn more effectively? Part 2 6. How can student learning best be tested?

Each Module will begin with an interactive web-based presentation (Webinar) by Dr John Dent, Professor Ronald Harden or Professor Richard Hays, in which they introduce ideas and describe current thinking relating to the topic. A recording of the sessions will be available. The webinar timetable can be found on Page 8. You are then asked to take part in online discussion groups with your tutor at a time convenient to you. In these you are asked to apply the ideas and principles to your own teaching practice. Assessment for each module is based on the submission of a short assignment to your tutor and your participation in the discussion groups.

Using MedEdWorld The course operates through AMEE’s online platform MedEdWorld. As a course participant you have been enrolled as a member and you can explore the wide range of facilities available at www.mededworld.org. Your AMEE username and password can be used to access MedEdWorld. If you have forgotten your AMEE password visit http://www.amee.org/ForgotPassword.aspx. If you have forgotten your username, email [email protected]

My ESME You have a dedicated area on MedEdWorld – My ESME. This will give you more information about the course, the tutors and the course participants. To access My ESME Log in to www.mededworld.org using your AMEE username and password, and select My ESME from the top menu. There are full details of each module including the information about the webinars, the online discussion activity, the personal assignment and the resources. After you have entered the My ESME area, the MedEdWorld Administrator will make your discussion group available to you in each module area. You will see the discussion group to which you have been allocated when you log into My ESME at the start of the course. Please note: if you are unable to get into the My ESME area or you cannot see your discussion group, it may be that we are still setting this up, have not received payment for the course or we are processing it. Please be patient with us.

My Profile Please spend a few minutes completing your own profile and uploading a photograph to help others in your group get to know something about you, including your interests and current activities. To complete your My Profile log in to www.mededworld.org with your AMEE username and password (this is the username and password you created to register for the course). Webinars During each two week module you are invited to join Professor Harden, Professor Hays or Dr Dent in a live interactive presentation using the Adobe Connect platform (see below). Webinars take place at 09:00am and are repeated at 5:00pm UK time. An archive will be made available in the My ESME area of MedEdWorld for those unable to join the webinar at one of these times. We hope that you will join in the discussions by asking questions or commenting in the chat box or verbally. We suggest you log in at least 15 minutes prior to the scheduled start time. The world clock available at http://www.timeanddate.com/worldclock/meeting.html may assist you with changing the webinar times into your time zone. Before entering the webinar please make sure that you have the latest version of Adobe Flash Player on the computer from which you will join the webinar. It is essential that the Adobe Flash Player is checked well before of the beginning of the course to allow time for any technical issues to be put right just in case there is a compatibility problem. If you have any issues during the checking process please contact [email protected] for help. To check your version of Adobe Flash Player, please visit http://helpx.adobe.com/flash-player.html. It would be very good if you have a web camera so you can speak and be seen during the webinar. Some laptops have this as standard equipment. For desktop computers we have found a useful webcam with a built in microphone is the Logitech C920 HD Pro USB 1080p Webcam, available from Amazon and other sources. You can join each webinar by clicking on the webinar link in each module. Webinar links will also be emailed to you the day before the webinar is scheduled to take place. The webinar timetable can be found on Page 8.

Discussion groups Online group activity A key part of the course is an online group activity and discussion around the theme for each module. Each discussion group is allocated a tutor and group activity to which you can share your own ideas, views and experiences. You will be able to see the photos and profiles of other members of your group as long as everyone completes their My Profile. You need to take part in the online group activity in each module if you wish to receive the ESME StudentCertificate in Medical Education. You may be asked to be a group facilitator for a module or a reporter. This will be the decision of the tutor to whom you are assigned and they will contact you directly about this. Using the Discussion Groups The discussion group can have a number of threads, each one about a particular topic of the group activity. When you enter the group you can look to see if there is a thread relating to the topic you wish to discuss. If so, click the thread title and enter your comment. If the topic you would like to discuss is not covered in the thread titles, select ‘new thread’ to create a new topic. You can choose to view entries in the group either as listed under each thread or by time. If you click ‘subscribe to post’ you will receive an email when others reply to your comment. This may sound complicated but we think you will find it easy once you start.

Time commitment The ESME Online course is rated as 8 credits, equivalent to 80 hours’ work. The estimated time commitment per week, including attendance at webinars, participation in discussion groups, reading the recommended resources and completing the assignment, is 4-5 hours.

Assignments Personal assignment For each module there is a short personal assignment. You must complete the assignment if you wish to be awarded the AMEE ESME Student Certificate in Medical Education. We ask that during each module and particularly towards the end of the module, you take time to think about and reflect on issues addressed and try to apply some of what you have learned to your own work as a teacher/trainer. These should be written down but we are looking for no more than 500 words on the topic and this should be sent directly by email to your group tutor. If you do not feel it is possible for you to complete the set assignment in relation to your own teaching experience please contact your tutor who will discuss this with you. You should finish your assignments within one week of the end of each module. It is essential that you complete the assignment on outcome-based education in Module 2 before you embark on Modules 5 and 6 as the later modules build on your previous work.

Criteria for award of AMEE ESME Certificate in Medical Education When you successfully complete the 12 week course you will be awarded an AMEE ESME Certificate in Medical Education signed by Trudie Roberts, AMEE President, and Ronald Harden, AMEE General Secretary. This records your commitment to achievement in the field of medical education. This includes the University of Hong Kong, the Pontificia Universidad Catolica de Chile, Flinders University, Australia, Ross University School of Veterinary Medicine, Saint Kitts, Dundee University and the University of Liverpool, UK. To earn the award of the Certificate you must:
