TECHNOLOGY REVIEW
As part of our initiative to stay a generation ahead,
NIKUM has assembled the latest magnetic actuation
technology, highest quality vacuum interrupters, and
most durable insulating material into the most
dependable, cost effective, and lowest maintenance
solution for recloser products. The PSN and NECL
series, all function using the advanced technology
created by NIKUMs researchers, and engineers.
The reclosing sequence can be adjusted according to
the requirement.
Recloser Technology
Vacuum Interruption
NIKUM reclosers use vacuum as the interrupting medium.
Vacuum interrupters provide fast, low-energy arc
interruption with long contact and interrupter life, low mechanical
stress, and maximum operating safety.
With arc interruption taking place in a vacuum, contact and
interrupter life are several times greater than with interruption in
oil, virtually eliminating Interrupter maintenance.

Surge Protection
Best operating results are achieved
when reclosers are protected with
surge arresters. On line applications,
arrester protection is recommended
on both sides of a recloser. If protection
is to be provided on one side
Flashover Recovery
Flashovers occur when an object,
usually wildlife, contacts energized
parts of the equipment. The NIKUM
recloser minimizes the effect of flashovers
with remarkable physical resilience,
arc-quenching properties, and
a self-healing ability. NIKUM recloser
can withstand the enormous forces
experienced during faults without
wholesale damage and allows reenergizing
after external flashover

Construction
In common with other reclosers, Type NIKUM reclosers are designed for long service life with minimum maintenance. The
recloser head is an aluminum/steel casting. The tank is fabricated of heavy-gauge steel and is finished with a corrosion-inhibiting-
epoxy prime coat, followed by a finish coat of thermosetting decal paint. Finish color is light gray.
The recloser head is attached to a welded angle- and channel-steel box frame which facilitates handling and mounting. The tank is
suspended within the box frame from the head. Each interrupter is independently suspended from the internal mechanism under
the recloser head in a way which eliminates mechanical stress on the bushings as well as any need for adjustment between the
bushing and interrupter. Silicon bushings are provided for flexible mounting options.
Two targets, embedded on the recloser body, provide continuous (easily readable) indications of contact position and recloser
state. Contact position indication is either CLOSED (white letters on red background) or OPEN (white letters on green back-
ground).
A four-stage auxiliary switch is provided as standard. Normally set for four a and four b contacts, the switch can be pro-
grammed for other a and b combinations totaling eight. It is operated by the recloser mechanism and is wired to a terminal
block in the operator cabinet. The switch can be used to provide a remote indication of contact position or to switch other devices,
such as alarm circuits, coincidentally with recloser contact opening and closing.
Operation
Line current in all three phases is sensed by 1000:1 ratio current transformers on bushings 1, 3, and 5 under the recloser head.
Continuous signals from the CTs, proportional to line currents, are routed to the recloser control, where they are monitored.
When the line current flows in excess of the programmed minimum trip level, in one or more phases, and after a time delay based
on the programmed time current characteristic, a trip solenoid in the operating mechanism is energized by the electronic control
(240V AC). The solenoids pull a shaft coupled with the vacuum interrupters that provide enough force for the interrupters to break
the contact. A linkage simultaneously operates all three phases, opening the recloser contacts and a switch which interrupts the
trip signal.
from the control.
During the process of tripping the shaft gets locked in the end position by a automatically adjusting self locking device. Once the
recloser is tripped, the supply to the solenoids are cut-off to save energy by a limit switch.
Closing
As with contact opening, contact closing force is provided
through the release of closing solenoids. The closing solenoids
are charged by 240 V AC supply fed through contactors. Upon
receiving a closing signal from the control, a solenoid energiz-
es, overcoming the forces exerted by the locking mechanism.
When released from the lock, the solenoids cause the operat-
ing mechanism to close the vacuum interrupter contacts. Limit
switches interrupt the supply to the solenoids and the signal
from the control when the recloser is closed to save energy.

Recloser Electronic Control
Nikum recloser is electronically con-
trolled by a recloser control unit. The
relay offers a choice of two controls that
can be used in conjunction with this re-
closer. The control unit, is a solid-state
electronic control system, using conven-
tional, discrete, electronic components.
Control operating parameters are pro-
grammed via plug-in modules. These
programming components provide pre-
cise values for operating parameters,
which include: time-current characteris-
tics, reclosing delay intervals, and mini-
mum trip levels.
The control provides simple selector
switch determination of phase and
ground-trip sequences and operations to
lockout. Operating characteristics and be
quickly and easily changed, to meet new
application requirements, by simply
changing the dial settings or plug-in
component(s), without removing the re-
closer from service.
The relay control can be equipped with a
variety of accessories to provide remote
operation and monitoring for SCADA
applications.
Some of the available accessories in-
clude: remote fault indication, re-
mote modification of operating
characteristics, and remote opera-
tion.

REMOTE CONTROL & MONITORING
When used with a compatible Distribution Automation System (DSA) Nikum pole mount-
ed reclosers support remote controlling and monitoring to provide the following ad-
vantages:
Information on reclosure status and fault current values transmitted to system control
allows fast operation of the faulted line section, reducing the travelling time of line crews.
This same information allows informed remote switching which reduces the affected
area and quickly restores supply.
Reclosers can be configured and settings managed from system control, without
technicians having to visit each individual reclosure in the field, with a consequent reduc-
tion in staffing and improved system integrity.
Supported communications
include:
Wi-Fi, cellular, radio,
Ethernet, SCADA,
and 900/1800/2100 MHz
spread spectrum.
