Pastor’s Notebook: August 26th
“Subordinate? You’ve got to be kidding me. No way!”
“Scripture scholars frequently point out that because of the strong Jewish insistence on achieving fulfill-ment during this life, Paul often zeroed in on ordinary human relationships. It’s in such everyday give and take that Christian quality of life issues most come to the fore. And probably no passage is better known from Ephesians than today’s. “Most of us have huge problems with Paul’s absolute command: ‘Wives should be subordinate to their husbands as to the Lord. For the husband is head of his wife just as Christ is head of the Church…As the Church is subordinate to Christ, so wives should be subordinate to their husband in everything.’ “But before we go off the deep end about this being God’s last word on the subject of husband-wife relationship, we must note two things. First, the passage begins with the statement: ‘Be subordinate to one another out of reverence for Christ.’ Paul is convinced that in imitating Jesus, all Christians should some-how be subordinate to those around them. Mark’s Jesus succinctly expressed this conviction in Chapter 10: ‘I came not to be served, but to serve (10:45). As followers of Jesus, both husbands and wives are ex-pected to be subordinate to one another. “Following the biblical rule of thumb that the bigger the problem, the more verses are given over to it, no-tice that the section on husbands loving their wives is three or four times longer than the part about wives loving their husbands. It would appear the problem in the Ephesian Church that prompted this passage didn’t revolve around the way wives were treating their husbands; rather, it arose from the objectionable ways in which husbands were treating their wives. “Paul employs classic persuasive methodology: Get the people whose behavior you’re trying to change on your side from the beginning. I can image husbands initially poking their wives and encouraging them, ‘Listen to that guy; he knows what he’s talking about.’ “Then Paul springs the trap: ‘Husbands should love their wives as their own bodies. He who loves his wife loves himself. For no one hates his own flesh.’ What’s good for the gander is good for the goose!” (Fr. Roger Karban, Celebration Resources.)
No matter what time of year or whatever situation spouses find themselves, this is holy and healthy advice. Remember, to “love” means to “will the good” of the other. That is what Jesus has been telling us these past five weeks in John 6: he will give of his very substance, his very self, totally for US SINNERS, so that somehow we might have a share in His Eternal Life with the Father and the Holy Spirit. We are created for UNION, total self-gift! It is only in giving ourselves away do we find ourselves; in loving that we discover love. As summer begins to wind down and we look to the beginning of school and the start of so many other programs, let us look to Jesus as our model in all that we do. Let us, not like so many of Jesus’ disciples in today’s Gospel, walk away because what he teaches is too difficult, but rather let us realize that with Peter, “Lord to whom shall we go? You alone have the words of eternal life!” In Christ, our life, I love you,

REFLECTION MOMENT
In today’s Gospel, we hear that a number of Jesus’followers left himbecause hismessagewas too diffi‐cultforthemtoaccept.Inessence, theydidnotbelievein him. He then asked the Twelve if they wished toleave as well. Peter responds by making a profoundprofession of faith in Jesus as Lord and Savior. TheTwelvemade a choice and stood by their choice, re‐maining loyal to their commitment to Jesus. EUCHARISTIC ADORATION Let’s all make the small sacrifice of time, and offer an hour of Adoration before the ‘Real Presence’ of our Lord, to demonstrate our desire to put God first
in our lives.
Commit one short hour weekly, bi-monthly or monthly as a gift of thanks to the one who offered His Life for your salvation. You will receive in
return much more than you can imagine…in this life and the next! Call Jeanne Wittman, 359-3872,
to schedule your hour of love.
We are in need of Guardian Adorers for Sunday from 2-3pm and 3-4 pm.

“There is still more good news and bad news. The bad news is that Food Bank client numbers continue to climb and will do so until the unem‐ployment rate shows a real improvement. The good news is you. You have joined us and shared the responsibility of feeding our neighbors. I cannot say it strongly enough, we could not help so many without your support. Thank you.”
From a thank you letter to the parish from Robert Coit, Executive Director, Thurston County Food Bank.
PLEASE CONTINUE TO BE GENEROUS NEXT WEEKND. NON‐PERISHABLE FOOD, HYGIENE ITEMS AND CASH DONATIONS ARE VERY MUCH APPRECIATED.
JustFaith Information Night – Thursday, August 30 at 7:00 PM in Gathering Space Room 2. This is an opportunity to come
and ask questions and learn more about JustFaith and Engaging Spirituality.
Do you long to lead an extraordinary life of compassion?
Are you called to be linked to God’s vision of justice and reconciliation?
Will you help to transform the world through love and service – and be transformed in the process?
JustFaith focuses on discipleship—engagement in the life of Jesus—and the call to be about God’s dream of justice and compassion in a world scarred by the domestic and global crisis called poverty. The intent is to emphasize and enliven the healing work of God’s compassion found in scripture, church history and teaching, and faithful witnesses.
JustFaith will be offered at St. Michael Parish starting in September. Call John Terranova in the parish office (292‐7108) for more information about JustFaith at St. Michael’s. Visit www.justfaith.org.

HowtoCelebrateMasswithaChildwithSpecialNeeds
Useapicturemissal.
People with autism often compensate fortheirdeficitsbyrelyingmoreon theirvisualsense.Onewaytocapitalizeonthisistouseamissal containing picture icons. Thepicture missal that Mercedes and Ideveloped and used successfully withDanielle is an example of this. It’s based onthe Picture Exchange CommunicationSystem (PECS), where the childcommunicates by selecting laminatedpictureiconsandattachingthemwithVelcroto a sentence strip.PECS iswidely taught inspecial education classes and homeprograms. Our picture missal has two icons per page.Thefirstgivesbodyposition,andthesecondshowsmostofthemajorpartsoftheMass.Aparenthelpsthechildholdthemissalonthecorrect page and uses hand‐over‐handprompts to point to each icon. Most of thetimethechildwillmoveintothecorrectbodyposition; if not, the parent gentlyassists the child into standing, sitting, orkneeling. Reinforcements such as hugs orsqueezes should be used to strengthensuccesses. This helps give children withspecial needs the information they need toparticipate. Ittakespracticeandpersistence, but it is well worth it. Once a child knowswhat is expected of him or her, Massbecomes awhole lotmore fun for the child, the family, and the other parishioners.Excerpt from Faith, Family, and Children with Special Needs by David Rizzo.“How to Celebrate Mass with a Child with

Youth Migrant Project. Three words that changed my life, and that will always have a huge place in my heart. I have learned so much from that week. I learned to place all my trust in God, to love my life to the fullest, and most of all to be grateful for all I have. Seeing the migrants happy with so little. Seeing them smiling when they get their plate of food, laughing as we played, and caring for each other; they don't require much to be happy. The sparkle in a little girls eyes as we chased butterflies; priceless. Although we went to help them, they helped us. They reminded us of all we have. I had a chance to grow in my faith. One night we worshiped God and He filled our hearts. I left that week with so many memories bowling, car rides, soccer, mass, and the food bank. I'd like to thank Jose Ortiz and his family for inspiring me to make a difference. Leaving YMP we all
left with something incredible inside us. We all became a fam‐ily. It's like a home away from home. Truly life changing and unforgettable.
