the new English translation of the Roman Missal was implemented on the first Sunday of advent, november 27, 2011. at that time, parishes in the uS began to worship with new or revised musical settings of the Mass. to help music directors choose one that works for their community, Ocp is pleased to provide a closer look at four recently published settings. watch for previews of other new and revised settings in future issues of Today’s Liturgy.

TL: How does this setting draw assemblies into worship at Mass?RM: liturgy celebrates, among other things, unity in diversity. for this reason, i chose to write a multilingual setting of the prayer of the faithful. One of the best moments to celebrate cultural diversity is during these communal intercessions. this setting can be sung in thirty different languages—ara-bic, cantonese, celtic, croatian, English, filipino, french, German, Greek, Hawai-ian, Hungarian, Hmong, igbo (nigerian), indonesian, italian, Japanese, Korean, lao, latin, Malayalam (india), Mandarin, Mo-hawk, navajo, Ojibwe, polish, portuguese, Spanish, Swahili, tongan, and vietnamese.

TL: What was your inspiration for Mass of Spirit and Grace?RM: i thought about the assembly voice first (e.g., “can my mother sing this melo-dy a cappella?” and if not, i threw it away). at the same time, i wanted to write strong melodies and harmonies to keep their inter-est. Keeping the needs of music and liturgy directors in mind, i actually set to music all of the verbatim Sunday Gospel verses found in the Lectionary—there are more than 150! Singing the assigned verse(s) of the particular Sunday celebration forms a perfect liturgical, theological, and scriptur-al marriage between the Gospel acclama-tion verse and the Gospel reading. © 2011 Ocp. all rights reserved.

The Most Holy Trinity6/3/2012 yeAr B

today’s music suggestions were chosen with the Most Holy trinity in mind. after making your selections, look carefully at where each trinitarian verse falls. Sometimes it appears in verses 1–3, but in “all creatures of Our God and King” it doesn’t appear until verse 7. do you really want to sing that many verses? it could take longer than the liturgy of the word.

Summer is now upon us, the traditional time set aside for recreation. Hopefully ministers will have time to catch up on spiritual, liturgical, and recreational reading. workshops and conventions offer opportunities for new information, but it takes a longer period of time and consistent practice for musical skills to take root. certification programs are often very specific and necessarily limited, while academic summer sessions provide more time for developing skills. three examples: a) One of my university music major stu-dents is now 74 years young. She began college at age 72. She has studied piano for years and desires the validation of a music degree; b) as a second career, a retired military officer (guitarist) wants to be a director of music ministry in order to spread the Gospel through music. He is in his fifties; c) My husband chose to go to nursing school at age sixty-four. after graduation he worked as a hospital and hospice nurse.

Summer is a perfect time for daydreaming. imagine where you want to be in five years, then give it a try. things will fall into place. if finances are a challenge, pursue some of the grants and scholarships that are offered. begin!

May the Holy Spirit guide you.— Elaine Rendler-McQueeney
