Artist Statement

My body of work centers on relational transitivity, using various forms of digital media to create new meanings and representations through

conversation, interaction and collaboration. My work is an exploration of process and narrative that involves participation and dialogue with

diverse groups of people that relates to experiences attached to global migration, identity, memory and site. I am interested in the impact of

displacement and the arrival into a new place - the feeling of uncertainty in the space combined with unfamiliar collection of objects and

images that captures both isolation and eventual adaptation.

At present, my work is influenced by the experiences and issues related to mobile identities, hybridity and belonging. I am interested in

creating moments of similarities from the past to create a memory of space in the present.

The Sea is Present is a series of works that reflect the transitional nature of the sea. The sea as a site of cultural roots, historical memories and routes; a metaphor for time, distance

and change.

‘The Sea is Present ’#2 | 2012 | Participatory and Relational Work | 100 Postcards | Istanbul, Turkey

100 postcards with an image of the Tasman Sea were handed out to the locals to create interaction and participation resulting in conversations. The

postcards generated stories and narratives that related to memories of the sea. These postcards were part of daily conversations and interaction, sent from

Turkey back to Melbourne, daily by the artist. Currently the artist is in the process of creating a book using the text from the postcards.

‘The Sea is Present’ #4 | 2012 | Site-Specific Installation, Single Channel HD Video and Sound (8:01 min loop) | Found objects | Variable

This work explores the theme of water in relation to memory, site and identity. The moving image of the Tasman sea in the video represents

the past, present and future crossings and connections. The collected objects consolidate different meanings between places; it represents

experiences related to global mobility, cultural displacement and the co-existence of cultural identities in a place.

‘6 days - 6 cups - 6 readings’ #5 | 2012 | Installation and Sound ( 20:00 min loop ) | Coffee cups, graphite, paper , 2 speakers and ground coffee | Variable

A set of six cups were brought over to Turkey from Australia and used for coffee cup readings. The artist engaged with the locals to seek out traditional coffee cup

cups, were preserved and exhibited as part of the installation.
