Under a Delusion

Luke 4: 1-13

IT HAS OCCOURED to me recently, if the world is sane, then Jesus must have been as mad as a hatter and the Last Supper is the Mad Tea Party. The world says, “Mind your own business,” and Jesus says, “There is no such thing as your own business.” The world says, “Follow the most brilliant course and be a success,” and Jesus says, “Follow me and be crucified.” The world says, “Drive carefully – the life you save may be your own” – and Jesus says, “Whoever would save their life and lose it, and whoever loses their life for my sake will find it,” The world says, “Law and Order,” and Jesus says, “Love.” The world says, “Get,” and Jesus says, “Give.” In terms of the world’s sanity, Jesus is peculiar, and anybody who thinks they can follow him without being a little peculiar too is laboring less under a cross than under a delusion.

Welcome!

Please sign the friendship pad when it is passed to you and pass it to your neighbor.

The Apostles’ Creed I believe in God, the Father Almighty, maker of heaven and earth; and in Jesus Christ his only Son, our Lord; who was conceived by the Holy Spirit, born of the Virgin Mary, suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, dead, and buried; the third day he rose from the dead; he ascended into heaven, and sitteth at the right hand of God the Father Almighty; from thence he shall come to judge the quick and the dead. I believe in the Holy Spirit, the holy catholic church, the communion of saints, the forgiveness of sins, the resurrection of the body, and the life everlasting. Amen.

Gloria Patri

Glory be to the Father and to the Son and to the Holy Ghost; as it was in the beginning, is now, and ever shall be, world without end. Amen. Amen.

Doxology

Praise God, from Whom all blessings flow; Praise Him, all creatures here below; Praise Him above, ye heav’nly host;

Praise Father, Son, and Holy Ghost. Amen.

The Lord’s Prayer

Our Father who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name.

Thy kingdom come, thy will be done on earth,

as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread.

And forgive us our trespasses, as we forgive those who trespass against us.

And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil:

For thine is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory, forever. Amen.

The Confession (to be prayed by all) Almighty God, Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, maker of all things, judge of all people: We acknowledge and bewail our manifold sins and wickedness, which we from time to time most grievously have committed by thought, word, and deed, against thy divine majesty. We do earnestly repent, and

are heartily sorry for these our misdoings; the remembrance of them is grievous unto us. Have mercy upon us, have mercy upon us, most merciful Father. For thy Son our Lord Jesus Christ’s sake, forgive us all that is past: and grant that we may ever hereafter serve and please thee in newness of life, to the honor and glory of thy name; through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

The Prayer for Pardon and the Words of Assurance

The Great Thanksgiving Leader: The Lord be with you. People: And also with you. Leader: Lift up your hearts. People: We lift them up to the Lord. Leader: Let us give thanks to the Lord our God. People: It is right to give our thanks and praise. Leader: It is right, and a good and joyful thing, always and everywhere to give thanks to you…we praise your name and join their unending hymn: People: Response – “Holy, Holy, Holy” ---UMH p. 17 Leader: Holy are you, and blessed is your Son Jesus Christ…as we proclaim the mystery of faith. People: Response – “Christ Has Died” -- UMH p. 18 Leader: Pour out your holy spirit on us gathered here…now and forever to whom we we pray, Our Father… People: Response – “Amen” -- UMH p. 18

TODAY’S SCRIPTURE NT Pew Bible p. 106

John 12: 1-8 Six days before the Passover Jesus came to Bethany, the home of Lazarus, whom he had raised from the dead. There they gave a dinner for him. Martha served, and Lazarus was one of those at the table with him. Mary took a pound of costly perfume made of pure nard, anointed Jesus’ feet, and wiped them with her hair. The house was filled with the fragrance of the perfume. But Judas Iscariot, one of his disciples (the one who was about to betray him), said, “Why was this perfume not sold for three hundred denarii and the money given to the poor?” (He said this not because he cared about the poor, but because he was a thief; he kept the common purse and used to steal what was put into it.) Jesus said, “Leave her alone. She bought it so that she might keep it for the day of my burial. You always have the poor with you, but you do not always have me.”

The cost of a voucher for one child is $6.00. The cost to sponsor a class is $100. Our goal is $3,600 which is enough to buy every child at Seven Oaks a book. Payments should be made to Ashland church, marked “book fair”. We hope to conclude the fundraising by the end of April. Excess funds will be given to the teachers to buy books for their individual class libraries. Thanks for helping with this worthwhile project.
