Someone with time on his/her hands has figured out that if you live to be 70 years of age, the average church-goer will spend that much of it in church. This Sunday begins a new calendar year for us at Ashland Church. It gives us an opportunity to re-think how much THIS CHURCH means to us and how important Christian education is in the training of our children, youth and adults. The effectiveness of the Sunday church school and worship is directly related to regular attendance. It would be very difficult, for us at Ashland, to do our Lord’s work without the training and preparation we need to do our job, or to be spiritually fulfilled ourselves. Religious training begins in the home. The church and Sunday school are the briefing rooms, and the world around us is the laboratory where we put our training into practice. ONE AND A HALF YEARS AT CHURCH

If we squirm in a 55-minute worship service, it doesn’t sound very appealing to think of spending a whole one and a half years at church. Incidentally, the rest of your life is spent this way:

20 years sleeping 20 years working

6 years eating 7 years playing

5 years dressing 3 years waiting on other people

May we have two hours of your life on Sunday morning?

Create in us clean hearts, O God, and renew a right spirit within us; through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

Welcome!

Please sign the friendship pad when it is passed to you and pass it to your neighbor.

The Lord’s Prayer Our Father who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name. Thy kingdom come, thy will be done on earth, as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread. And forgive us our trespasses, as we forgive those who trespass against us. And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil: For thine is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory, forever. Amen.

The Apostles’ Creed

I believe in God, the Father Almighty, maker of heaven and earth; and in Jesus Christ his only Son, our Lord; who was conceived by the Holy Spirit, born of the Virgin Mary, suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, dead, and buried; the third day he rose from the dead; he ascended into heaven, and sitteth at the right hand of God the Father Almighty; from thence he shall come to judge the quick and the dead. I believe in the Holy Spirit, the holy catholic church, the communion of saints, the forgiveness of sins, the resurrection of the body, and the life everlasting. Amen.

Gloria Patri

Glory be to the Father and to the Son and to the Holy Ghost; as it was in the beginning, is now, and ever shall be, world without end. Amen. Amen.

Doxology

Praise God, from Whom all blessings flow; Praise Him, all creatures here below; Praise Him above, ye heav’nly host; Praise Father,

Son, and Holy Ghost. Amen.

TODAY’S SCRIPTURE

Luke 3: 15-17; 21-22 NT Pew Bible p. 60

As the people were filled with expectation, and all were questioning in their hearts concerning John, whether he might be the Messiah, John answered all of them by saying, “I baptize you with water; but one who is more powerful than I is coming; I am not worthy to untie the thong of his sandals. He will baptize you with the Holy Spirit and fire. His winnowing fork is in his hand, to clear his threshing floor and to gather the wheat into his granary; but the chaff he will burn with unquenchable fire.” Now when all the people were baptized, and when Jesus also had been baptized and was praying, the heaven was opened, and the Holy Spirit descended upon him in bodily form like a dove. And a voice came from heaven, “You are my Son, the Beloved; with you I am well pleased.”
