God Is The Landlord…. You can’t live on this earth without paying some sort of rent. Taking up space puts us all under obligation to share in the cost of keeping the world going. That comes under the heading of being a “good citizen”. While visiting my daughter in California, I observed a bunch of shacks along a ragged beach. “Why do they permit that sort of rubbish?” I asked her. She just smiled…. “They are squatters,” she said. “Some people just move in and take over. They pay no rent, do little work, and resent it when they are asked to move on. They don’t move; they just ‘squat’ and that is where they get the name squatter!” Every community has its share of squatters, people who take but don’t give. I suppose every church has its share, too. A pastor at a much larger church once said to me, “We’ve done everything but use a pistol and we still have 1,000 members who refuse to have any part of the budget.” He has more than his share of squatters --- people who have just “moved in,” demanded seats, songs, sermons, and program, but when you mention “subscribing” they just squat until the storm is over. Then they go right on letting others carry their fair share of the load. Today, October 28 th , is “Faith and Loyalty Sunday”. This is the day we are asked to consider our estimates of giving for the year to come. Our Stewardship and financial support of Ashland is one very important way in which we react to God’s gift of grace in our lives. God is the landlord –- he keeps the record. He knows if we are behind in our rent. --Tresco E. It finally feels like fall! That means retreat is just a couple of weeks away. Students, you should start packing your bags…or wait until the night before, but don’t forget your Bible. We’ll spend the weekend growing our relationship with God through prayer. Friends and family, please take some time during the retreat to deliberately pray for these 16 students throughout the fall retreat. Also, we would like to thank everyone for their support of the MYF program during the transition from the youth trailer to Ashland House. It is still a work-in-progress and is going to take a little while to finish settling in, but it already feels like home thanks to your generosity!

Missions

Snack Packs for Seven Oaks Thanks to Ashland's generous support, we are providing weekly Snack Packs to students at Seven Oaks Elementary School during the school year. Children who need food on the weekends receive a Snack Pack with 16 food items on Friday afternoon. A team of Ashland volunteers helped with the community food drive on October 20. As a result of the food drive, Ashland will receive six weeks worth of food supplies for our Snack Pack ministry. During November and December, we would like to provide extra food because the children do not receive their usual school meals during school holidays. We are seeking donations of 15 oz. jars of peanut butter (any brand). Please place peanut butter in the collection box outside room 101 or make arrangements with Val Songer ([email protected]). Throughout the year we can use donations of 15 oz. cans of pasta meals and juice boxes.
