A very big thank you to everyone who worked so hard to make Ashcott Open Gardens for the NGS on the 8th June such a success

To the team who ran the teas so efficiently, and to the many people in the Village who made all the delicious cakes. To Keith Prime for organising the car parking. To the team who ran the plant stall so well, and were busy the whole afternoon. Last but not least to the garden owners, who opened their gardens for the NGS and put in a great deal of work for weeks beforehand to have their gardens at their very best. All together this made an excellent total of £3,082.00 with a portion of the money from the teas going to the church and a portion from the Plant Stall going to Dorset & Somerset Air Ambulance. The rest of the money going to the NGS.

Many thanks ~ Mary Adkins

Village Hall. Once the project has

progressed slightly further, a

training meeting will be held

and we would welcome any-

one interested to come along.

This will be published in due

course.

Many thanks

VACANCY ON PARISH COUNCIL Currently there is one vacancy on

the Parish Council that the Council

is seeking to fill by co-option. If you

are interested please speak to any

of the councillors or contact:

[email protected]

SPEED INDICATOR DEVICES Currently the County Council control and set-up the speed indicator devices

that are used on the main roads in Ashcott. There is discussion taking place

between the County Council and the Parish Council about the Parish

Council taking responsibility for these devices. To consider the option the

Parish Council needs to know if there would be any volunteers from the

village to help with this.

Please come to the Democratic Half Hour of our meeting at

7.00pm on 21st July 2014 if the speed of traffic is a concern to you

& you could volunteer to help with this project

Volunteers would be responsible for moving the devices and reporting

regularly to the county council by email. Training will be given by the

County Council. The speed indicator devices are the ones that flash the

speed limit at you if you are going too fast. They also record the data of

traffic numbers and speeds.

All Saints Church News

Dear Friends,

Our new bishop, Rt. Revd. Peter Hancock has arrived in Somerset and the Polden

Wheel churches were his first official engagement in the diocese. He will hopefully

influence and empower our church communities in the next 10 years. Therefore I

thought you might like to know a little about him. You may wonder how this will

affect those of you who don’t have a great deal to do with our churches. Watch

the press I think you will find he will bring a breath of fresh air to our county.

Bishop Peter was born in Kent in 1955 but grew up in the Isle of Wight before his

family moved to Fareham, Hampshire when he was aged 11. He is a member of

the Society of Ordained Scientists and has an interest in the relationship between

science and Christianity. Children and young people have been at the centre of

his ministry. Previously he has undertaken youth work in parishes, helping organise

venture holidays. He was also district scout chaplain and has a long association

with scouting and guiding that he will look to continue in Somerset.

Bishop Peter has a passion for the countryside. He can often be found out and

about walking his two Golden Retrievers with his wife, Jane. He loves being by the

sea and has never lived far from it and is looking forward to exploring Somerset’s

coast line. His love for the countryside goes hand in hand with his concern for the

environment. That love of the countryside translates into a strong interest in rural

and environmental issues. This, alongside encouraging children and young people,

and supporting the homeless and most vulnerable in society, forms what Bishop

Peter describes as the “three threads” of his ministry.

Peter and Jane have four grown-up children, Claire, Richard, Charlotte and

William. Claire is a tropical agriculturalist. She travels extensively and works for

Tearfund as a Global Food Security Officer. Richard trained as an engineer and is

now an insurance broker in the City. Charlotte is a physiotherapist working in

University College Hospital. William is an engineer and has just begun working for

an engineering consultancy firm. All four children live and work in London.

The Bishop’s interests include walking, meeting people, travelling and watching

sport. He has particular concerns for the environment and the work of mission and

development agencies - and his 4 chickens!

It is often said that “Wells”, the centre of the Church of England in our county, does

not know what is going on in our rural villages, and cannot relate to us as people in

Somerset. Perhaps this new Bishop might make a difference.
