Wander back to the ferry terminal and here you’ll fi nd the launching point of Magic Broomstick Tours. The ‘broomsticks’ are Segways – the

two-wheeled self-balancing electric vehicles that you will be given comprehensive training in the safe riding and operation of before the tour begins. Take a short ride or a two hour guided tour. Learn about the Military forts around Devonport and be gob-smacked by the panoramic views of Auckland City and the Hauraki Gulf. Catch the 12.15pm Fullers Ferry back to central Auckland – look towards the city and how the Sky Tower rises above and pinpoints a focus to the Auckland skyline. How high do you think it is? You may just get a feeling for exactly how high it is very soon!

Phone 09 445 4035. www.magicbroomsticktours.co.nz

AfternoonIt’s time to get a little bit out of your comfort zone, so what will you do? Walk the edge of the Sky Tower, 182 metres above the hustle

and bustle of Auckland city, and get a true 360 degree view with not even a handrail between you and the view? Or take a leap of adventure and jump off the edge? You can do both with SkyWalk and SkyJump packages. The friendly crew will make sure you have the time of your life, and provide photos so you can show what a daredevil you are. Afterwards, you can toast your courage and the views at the Sky Lounge. Can you fi nd the white building on a hill to the east? That is the Auckland War Memorial Museum.

As you approach Devonport, look out to the twin hills, these are Mt Victoria and North Head, if you were to spend a day here, you could climb them and explore the First World War bunkers hidden in the hills. EveningReturn to the city, and head to Albert Street, which is very central.

If you need to get your bearings, it’s

just one street away from Queen

Street or three minutes walk from the Sky Tower.

Here you will fi nd Da Vinci’s Restaurant, which

serves classic northern Italian dishes and regional

specialities from the sunny south. Da Vinci’s warm

and atmospheric setting is a great place to cosy

up during winter and enjoy a delicious meal with

friends or family. They have an excellent wine

and beverage list to compliment your dinner so

sit back, relax and enjoy! They also have another

restaurant housed in a 19th Century listed

building in City Road off Symonds Street, if you

happen to be at the top end of Queen Street,

near Karangahape Road.

Auckland may be a marineplayground, but it also is home to some signifi cant heritage; catch the green Link bus (adult

fares $1.90) to Parnell, and ask the driver to stop

near the Auckland War Memorial Museum

— the cultural and spiritual touchstone for

New Zealanders. The Museum is also the fi rst

stop for anyone wishing to gain an insight into

New Zealand and its people. Within the neo-

classical building priceless Maori treasures,

amazing natural history, daily Maori cultural

performances, and an ever-changing feast of

local and international exhibitions (see page 15)

are to be explored and enjoyed.

Take a stroll back to Queen Street, where the beautiful Town Hall will impress you. If you enjoy classical music make sure you’re around for the

New Zealand Symphony Orchestra’s Bold Worlds on 13 July, where percussionist extraordinaire Colin Currie returns to New Zealand for an exciting Southern Hemisphere premiere at Auckland Town Hall. This bold new work promises to be both lyrical and brilliantly rhythmic. Highly respected Finnish conductor Osmo Vänskä directs the NZSO for Nielsen’s energetic Symphony No. 5. Have a drink at the nearby Box Café and Bar in the Aotea Centre before heading into the night scene (we suggest Freddy’s Ice House (see page 19) (Princes Wharf, 201 Quay Street) for chilled times) or back to your welcoming room at your accommodation.

For the past 45 years, the New Zealand International Film Festival (NZIFF) has brought the best and brightest of world

cinema straight from the international festival circuit to the

giant screens of New Zealand.

Auckland is the original home of the Film Festival, and hundreds of

thousands of people fl ip through the festival programme looking for a

fl ick that tickles their fancy.

Film festival audiences can get to know a 90-year old Wellington nun

with an enviable garden and a life-outlook to match, or experience a

cult fantasy classic complete with a live grunge rock band.

New Zealand premieres The festival includes world premieres of New Zealand fi lms that showcase

the commitment of local fi lmmakers who have dedicated vast swathes

of their time to getting the world on fi lm. Mix Shakespeare’s most famous

romantic tragedy with a little slice of New Zealand paradise and you get

a Kiwi version of ‘Romeo and Juliet’, where the action takes place in

a holiday park named Verona. A highlight for fans of dance will be the

world premiere of acclaimed New Zealand playwright and fi lm director

Toa Fraser’s feature fi lm interpretation of the Royal New Zealand Ballet’s

performance of ‘Giselle’, in the opening weekend at the Civic Theatre.

The Civic is designed to evoke a Moorish garden at night, with turrets, minarets, spires and two guardian Abyssinian Panther statues.

Live performance cinema and old-school 3D experienceNo it’s not a contradiction in terms – what is captured on fi lm can be

accompanied by live music, and those lucky enough to see silent-era

fi lms like ‘The Cameraman’ accompanied by the Auckland Philharmonia

Orchestra are in for a treat. 3D is not just a modern fi lm format – the

best fi lm-maker of cinema’s heydey worked in it back in 1954, and at

the festival, audiences can experience Hitchcock’s ‘Dial M for Murder’ in

revitalised 3D technology.

Showcase documentaries‘Antarctica: A Year on Ice’ is the story of director Anthony Powell who

spent nine winters in Antarctica. A self-taught photographer, Anthony

has built his own equipment to survive the harsh conditions and capture

stunning time-lapse imagery. A Year on Ice shows us a part of the world

most will never discover, in breathtaking hi-defi nition.

The Civic theatre – a 1930s picture houseQueen Street’s beautiful Civic Theatre, one of the few remaining

Atmospheric Theatres in the world will wow you. Built in 1929, The Civic is

designed to evoke a Moorish garden at night, with turrets, minarets, spires

Auckland has plenty of great beauty salons and spas

where you can while away an hour or two and get yourself

thoroughly pampered. So make the most of the many

options available and take the time to spend on yourself.

Give yourself a treat and choose from one of the many treatments

available; enjoy a relaxing facial treatment or invigorating massage, or

why not give your tired feet some much-needed attention with a soak

and a pedicure.

For some real indulgence, lie back and relax and enjoy an aromatic full

body polish or a luxurious body wrap. Some salons also have couples

treatments available so you and your loved one can enjoy a pampering

together.

Top up your tan in safety at one of Auckland solariums, or give yourself

the star treatment for a special occasion with a professional makeup

session, waxing, brow shaping or an exfoliating treatment.

If you fi nd yourself short of time to get to a salon, consider a mobile

beauty clinic that will come to you – so you can enjoy a treatment in the

comfort of your own room.

Whatever treatment – or treatments – you choose, you can be sure

you’ll emerge feeling like you’re on cloud nine.

From luxury hotels, easy and tidy motels and apartments

to friendly backpacker hostels; from bright and buzzy city

centre to green and charming suburbs, or meeting rooms

conveniently close to the airport, Auckland has room for you.

Look for the Qualmark star rating system to ascertain how

an accommodation property has been independently

rated. The Qualmark star system rates various categories of

accommodation in New Zealand and is a reliable indication

of the standard of facilities. You can also ask to see the

room – inspection should be welcome.

Hotels generally off er tea/coff ee making facilities, a bathroom and

an onsite restaurant and bar. Motel units and apartments are ideal

for travellers who prefer to do their own cooking, and usually off er

self-contained kitchens. If you’re on a fi xed budget, try some of the

backpacker or youth hostel accommodation with communal facilities.

The regional parks are another good alternative, providing camping

in a more peaceful rural setting. For a few more of life’s luxuries, there

are plenty of hotels, motels and self-contained apartments. To fi nd out

The offi cial New Zealand Road Code guidebook is

available at most bookstores and petrol stations.

Road RulesNew Zealand drives on the left. At roundabouts, always keep left and

give way to all traffi c on your right. All traffi c turning right should give

way to a vehicle coming from the opposite direction and turning left.

This applies at cross roads and T-intersections where both vehicles

are facing each other. New Zealand law requires all the occupants

of a moving vehicle car to wear a seatbelt. It is illegal to use a mobile

phone while driving unless it’s ‘hands-free’. The speed limit on

the open road is 100km/h and 50km/h in residential areas unless

otherwise marked. The New Zealand Police enforce all traffi c laws,

including the speed limit and dealing with accidents. All accidents

must be reported to the police within 24 hours. Dial *555 on cell

phones for non-emergency accidents. Obtain the driver’s name and

address and vehicle registration number.

Tips for Safe Driving• Speed cameras are in use on New Zealand roads – take care

not to exceed the signed speed limits as fi nes can be heavy, not forgetting the safety factor.

• Winding roads, diffi cult terrain and adverse weather conditions will slow you down, so allow plenty of time to reach your destination. Comfortable driving distances in a day are 200–300km, but less if you want to stop and enjoy attractions.

• Ringing bells and fl ashing red lights at a railway crossing signal that a train is coming. Look out for the distinctive X-shaped railway crossing signs, and take extra care especially at crossings not controlled by barrier arms.

Being home to over a third of New Zealand’s population,

Auckland is so much more than a bright-light-big-city

centre. This wildly varied region really does have it all.

Here’s a few of the character-fi lled spots on the outskirts

and outlying districts of Auckland.

Auckland’s Inner Suburbs

Mission Bay

Just a short, picturesque drive (or bus ride) from the CBD along

Auckland’s beautiful waterfront, Mission Bay is a favourite hang-out spot

for Aucklanders and visitors alike. With a long golden beach and thriving

café scene, this is the place to take a gentle stroll along the Promenade

and enjoy an ice-cream as you people watch.

Ponsonby

Ponsonby Road is one of Auckland’s more boutique shopping areas,

lined with great cafés, restaurants, designer stores and hairdressers. It’s

popular with weekend brunchers and evening scenesters.

Newmarket

South of the CBD is Newmarket, where the very best in fashion, style and

design are celebrated every day.

Parnell

One of Auckland’s more popular shopping areas, the colonial-style

buildings house a range of specialty and boutique shops, and there are

stacks of great cafés and restaurants.

Around AucklandMt Eden

Hugging the base of the iconic Mt Eden (where you can look down

into a cavernous crater), Mt Eden village is another quaint shopping

spot. The gift and curio shops contain all sorts of unusual items and

it’s a popular brunch area at the weekend.

Devonport

This seaside village, 12 minutes from the city centre, is of special

interest for curio and souvenir hunters, with its galleries, craft and

antique shops. There are shops in the complex at Devonport Wharf,

along with several cafés off ering great seaviews.

Takapuna

This North Shore suburb combines the best of both worlds.

A magnifi cently long golden sand beach with easy access

for boaties, fantastic shopping and busy eating and drinking

establishments. Residents here are known for being justifi ably

proud of their laid-back lifestyle.

Around Greater Auckland

Hauraki Gulf Islands

Auckland’s Gulf Islands are an extension of the city’s marine

playground. The best-known is Rangitoto, with its landmark

volcanic cone providing spectacular views of Auckland. Nearby

Waiheke Island is a popular holiday resort famous for its arts and

crafts and award-winning wineries. Tiritiri Matangi is home to a

bird sanctuary, while at Kawau Island, visitors can tour Mansion

House, the stately residence of New Zealand’s former Governor,

Sir George Grey. Further out, Great Barrier Island off ers unspoilt

beaches, native bush, historic logging and mining remains and

natural hot pools.

North Shore

Across the Harbour Bridge is Auckland’s North Shore, an area

known for its relaxed lifestyle, beautiful beaches and views across

the Hauraki Gulf. Make sure you explore the beautiful areas of Long

Bay Regional Park and Kauri Centennial Park in Birkenhead, which

are both great places to go walking and take in the views of the

stunning coastline. Popular with locals, you can enjoy experiencing

nature at its best, whilst still being able to see the Auckland city

skyline on the horizon.

East Auckland

Located about 20 kilometres from the city centre are Auckland’s

well-kept eastern suburbs. Boaties love this area with its easy

access to the sea and there is an excellent marina facility at Half

Moon Bay, and several safe swimming beaches. The Howick

Historical Village is located at Pakuranga, with restored historic

buildings, including fencible cottages.

West Auckland

In the west, Waitakere is renowned for its lush bush, stunning

coastline, market gardens and wineries. Titirangi Village has

a lively arts and crafts scene, while the bush-clad Waitakere

Ranges are one of Auckland’s scenic gems, with extensive walking

trails through native bush. The wild west coast beaches of Piha,

Muriwai, Whatipu and Karekare (where the opening scenes of the

movie The Piano were fi lmed) off er dramatic coastal walks and

great surfi ng.
