QUOTE OF THE WEEK"The mere presence of a handmadewooden object stirs something insideme; using that object providessomething extra. It's a feeling hard todescribe, but there is a peaceful humilityinvolved. Perhaps this is why I takespecial pride in making wooden objectsthat will be treasured and used bysomeone. It is a way of sharing who I amand making my mark on the world." ~Joshua Friend

AAW TIP OF THE WEEKButtons for Jumbo/Cole Jaws"Sometimes when using my jumbo/Cole-type jaws to finish the bottom of a bowl, I find thestandard buttons are not tall enough. Looking around for something else to use, I noticedsynthetic wine corks and decided to try them. I drilled through them on my lathe, held in aset of small spigot jaws. I added some M6-1 × 50mm bolts and the new, longer buttonswork super. I have since discovered a commercial product similar to my idea, but mineuses something that would otherwise be thrown away, is fun to obtain (drink responsibly),and costs about $2. Also, they leave no black or other colored marks on the surface ofthe wood." ~ Don Orr Schenectady, NY

BATTY DEMOS AT MAUIWOODTURNERS (The following is excerpted from "Turning Woodinto Gems," by Colleen Uechi, Maui News.) Curled wood shavings flew through theair as British woodturner Stuart Battyguided a long-handled tool across thesurface of a block of koa. "He isjust unbelievable," said Achaval, thepresident and founder of the MauiWoodturners Association. "Almost nosanding is needed when he's done."Read the rest of the story.

BLOCH TURNSLAMPSHADES

(The following is excerpted from "WoodGlow, NewLondon, New Hampshire," by Peg Lopata,Monadnock Table) Peter Bloch, a self-taught woodturner fromNew London, New Hampshire, is like anexplorer seeking out the nature of wood. While most of us see a tree as one ofnature's most opaque creations, underBloch's experienced hand, he recreates itinto a translucent lampshade. Bloch'sbeen working with wood for nearly 40years, starting in his early 20s makingwood sculptures, then later, makingfunctional wood objects such as boxesand bowls.
