The Polk Arts Alliance (PAA) is moving forward into 2013 with

laser-like vision and a great deal of excitement. Were excited

about recent accomplishments on behalf of arts and culture in

Polk and the great things we know are yet to come as we build

on those successes.

As recently elected President, I am honored to serve on a board whose members share

that excitement and are also deeply committed to ensuring that arts and culture play

an integral role in driving Polks economy and creating/sustaining the quality of life

we all enjoy. This year, four new board members join PAA and their astute businesssense, leadership skills and dedication will complement the existing boards insight,

experience and talents. On behalf of PAA, I welcome Maryann W. Cassell, Gary

Gessford, Patricia K. Lamb, Jane Waters Thomas to the board.

Over the past year, to accomplish the goals of the arts and culture community, PAA

forged partnerships with arts organizations and related industries, business leaders,

opinion drivers, government leaders and tourism/economic development experts

as well as a host of individuals and companies that have demonstrated passion for

advancing the arts in both education and the community. These valued partners

engaged in PAAs efforts because they recognize how important arts and culture are to

both our today and our tomorrow. They know that the arts provide and sustain

employment and help create a talented, skilled and creative workforce for businesses.

They know that creativity is the key to success in competitive markets and situations.They know, also, that the arts connect us with our humanity and bring out the best

in all of us. In short, they get it and we are honored to stand shoulder to shoulder

with them as we forge ahead.

We are thrilled that, as a result of our collective efforts and for the rst time in many

years, there is now a dedicated revenue stream in place for arts and culture. With

that revenue stream in place, PAA pledges to be an integral part of the process that

determines the criteria for distribution of those dollars (in the form of grants), as well

as how grant recipients will deliver/report measurable results to earn funding.

As we look ahead, a huge thank you goes out to all of our partners everyone who

answered our call, many times, to advocate for and support the arts over the past

year. Together, we celebrate a hugely successful 2012 and look forward, with renewedenergy, to 2013 as we continue to strengthen our advocacy, marketing and education

efforts to gain even greater local and state recognition of Polk County as a true

Destination for the Arts.

We kicked off the season with Polk County celebrating the2nd Annual Heart of the Arts month in October and we look

forward to a very full holiday season and busy 2013. The winter

season exemplies world class arts, entertainment, educational

facilities and programs that surround us, enriching the quality of

life we experience in Polk County.

We leave 2012 having accomplished some amazing milestones that will benet our

cultural arts council members for years to come but we could not have done it

without the help and support of the PAA board of directors, our arts partners and the

Polk County Board of County Commissioners. Please thank them for their support,

recognition of the importance of the arts, their dedicated hard work to be fair and

balanced and patience to work with us this past year in support of the arts.

The BoCC support of the arts allows us to work toward our objectives that include

developing the image of Polk County as the Cultural Arts Destination that we are;

bringing global awareness of what the County has to offer in the arts right here in our

own backyard.

We have a lot of work to do but we have excellent support, new tools for marketing

our arts, great momentum and the abundant talent throughout the county, Im looking

forward to an exciting 2013!

Holiday Showcase/MarketFrom November 16, 2012 through January 2013 Arts on the

Park provides local artisans an opportunity to showcase and

sell their artistic wares in the Gallery. Arts on the Park Hours

Showcase/Holiday Market hours are Wednesday from Noon to

4pm and Thursday-Saturday from Noon-8pm. Extended hours

are also offered during festive Downtown Lakeland activities,including the Holiday Walkabout on November 27 and First

Friday, December 7.

Of course, leave it to Polk Countys art teachers to becreative! Surely this past years Kids Tag Art(KTA) is a perfectexample of the superior art instruction occurring around thecounty for 5th graders who are participating in the 7th year ofthis innovative new program launched by the Polk County TaxCollectors Ofce.

When you look at the use of specialized mediums nowemployed in arts classrooms around the county, Joe Tedderexplains, you cant help but see the impact this program is

having in both giving art teachers discretionary funds for usein the classroom while also inspiring them to teach to theirfull potential.

Southern Homes is again this years major sponsor,donating generously along with other dedicated, returningsponsors Douglass Screen Printers, MIDFlorida, Grasslands& Oakbridge, Florida Heart Research Institute, Vecchio,Carrier and Feldman, P.A., Polk Education Foundation, andAlphagraphics. The KTA Steering Committee is comprised ofpartners Polk Museum of Art, Douglass Screen Printers, Inc,Polk Arts Alliance, and Polk County Schools, as well as thePolk County Tax Collectors Ofce who hosts the program.

Greg Masters, President of Southern Homes, adds, Eventhough we have tremendous county-wide involvement ofstudents, teachers, parents and the community in thisproject, we are encouraging parents to see the importanceof purchasing their childs artwork, as a keepsake, whichreinforces the learning process and is a strong afrmationof the students creative accomplishment. At the sametime, $8 from the sale of each tag stays right there in thatparticular school to continue growing and enriching futurestudents art education in a lasting and powerful way.

Kids Tag Art also helps teachers connect the dots betweeninspiring creativity in kids and nurturing successful,innovative young leaders. This past year, as part of their$25,000 donation, Southern Homes gave out specicmonetary awards to teachers at their August Kickoff.Surprised teachers received $100 gift certicates to HobbyLobby if their student won a special design award or if theirschool had the most improved tag sales.

Kids Tag Art is a school art program originating here in PolkCounty by the Tax Collectors Ofce that inspires 5th gradeart students to learn about and design their own auto vanityplate art and in the process, raises supplemental monies for

classroom art supplies. The Tax Collectors Ofce has hostedKids Tag Art for the past six years and to date, over$122,000 has been raised for classroom art supplies.

Last year, Kids Tag Art expanded into Highlands and Charlottecounties. Those tax collectors report wide and enthusiasticacceptance, while other counties such as Marion andNassau County are gearing up this fall for their rst yearoffering the program. In every county where the concepthas been introduced to date, educators and communityarts organizations have eagerly jumped on board to see itmaterialize for their arts educators.

Right now, order forms are going home with students andparents can buy their childs artwork made into a vanity tagfor just $15. Parents only have this opportunity to purchasetheir childs unique art. Once the artwork is judged, twotags from each school are announced as Awards of Distinctionin mid-November and go up for sale on the Tax Collectorwebsite, www.PolkTaxes.com for purchase in time for holidaygift-giving. Only these tags are able to be purchased by thepublic for $28.

Insanity issues when legendary lm producer David O.

Selznick is ve weeks into shooting Gone With the Wind

when he realizes the script is awful and the director

doesnt have a clue. He has ve days to replace them and

restart the shoot or the production shuts down. Selznick

calls Victor Fleming from the set of The Wizard to Oz to

direct, and he taps legendary playwright, screenwriter and

script doctor Ben Hecht to rewrite the script. Theres

only one problem Hecht hasnt read the book. Over the

course of ve madcap days, the three men, assisted by

Selznicks assistant, Miss Poppenghul, frantically craft one

of the most beloved screenplays of all time, as Selznick

and Fleming act out the book for Hecht and the phone

rings off the hook with calls from the likes of Vivien Leigh,

Louis B. Mayer and Ed Sullivan. This play is madness

Pianist and guest soloist Robert Fleitz performs

Griegs Concerto for Piano in A Minor on November 5

n November the ISO welcomes Lakelands own Robert

Fleitz to the stage as they perform European favorites

from the classical repertoire. European Stars features

selections such as Valse Triste by Sibelius, Czech Suite

by Dvorak and Griegs Concerto for Piano in A Minor,

showcasing the musical genius of Fleitz on the piano.

Fleitz, 19, began studying piano with his father, Patrick, at

the age of four. He currently studies under the direction

of Julian Martin at the renowned Juilliard School in

New York City and is an alumnus of the Bowdoin Music

Festival, Aspen Music Festival, the Banff Centre and the

Centre dArts Orford. In addition to the piano, Robert is

an accomplished cellist studying under the ISOs own

Michael Sedloff for the past nine years.

with Sun n Fun for a Patriotic Tribute celebrating

Americas veterans. The Outdoor Pops Concert begins

Its an honor to join the Gardens

and a privilege to be chosen for this

much coveted position, Dhollander

said. The Singing Tower carillon is

regarded as one of the worlds nest

instruments of its kind and I lookforward to furthering its international

reputation.

Hailing from Belgium, Dhollander has

taught, composed and performed

all over Europe, and has played

the Gardens carillon several times

before, including at ve previous

International Carillon Festivals.

Dhollander is an acclaimed musician and has been the rst

prize winner in about 30 international competitions for carillon

and/or composition. In 2008, he was awarded the Berkeley

Medal of Honor for Distinguished Service to the Carillon, which

is The University of Californias top honor. In 2011, he won theprestigious Dutch ANV-Visser Neerlandia Prize with his carillon

composition Ciacona.

According to Bok Tower Gardens President David Price, Geert

had been scheduled to be a composer-in-residence at the

Gardens when we were starting our search to ll the carillonneur

position. I rst heard him play over 20 years ago and again

several times at our international carillon festivals and was taken

by his mastery of the carillon and the emotion he played with.

We put together a search committee to nd a carillonneur,

but over the course of Geerts time here I realized he had all the

attributes we were looking forperformer, composer, teacher,

and on top of that a personality that can charm the public. The

planets just lined up for us both, Price said.

Dhollander has been playing the carillon since his early

teens, but his father, also a carillonneur, introduced him to the

instrument as soon as Geert could walk.

I grew up with bells, they were in my blood. But in the

beginning, I wasnt interested in the notes, Dhollander said. I

was more interested in climbing all those medieval towers and

touching doors that no one had opened for a hundred years.

When Dhollander was 13, he decided to pursue a career

in carillon and started classes at The Royal Carillon School in

Mechelen, Belgium while still in high school. Four years later, at

only 17 years old, he was the youngest person to graduate with

a degree in carillon from that school.

He rst saw the Gardens in 1982 right after his graduation when

his father toured him around the United States, visiting carillons

throughout the country. The rst carillon he played in America

was the Singing Tower.

I was very impressed with the instrument, the whole setting,

everything. It was like nothing Id ever experienced before, he

said. Its an oasis of rest and the perfect natural concert hall.

His career has taken him to various countries and carillons. He

was appointed carillon professor at the University of California

Berkeley where he performed and taught. He also served as the

carillon composition teacher at the Royal Carillon School; the

same school he studied at as a teenager. Most recently he was

the carillonneur at the Antwerp Cathedral and Belfry of Ghent.

Dhollander is only the fourth carillonneur since the Singing Towewas dedicated in 1929. Anton Brees was the Singing Towers rst

carillonneur from 1929 to 1968. The Anton Brees Carillon Library

in the tower was established in 1968 and is the largest and most

comprehensive carillon library in the world. Dedicated entirely

to the carillon and related subjects, the library includes books,

periodicals, recital programs, music scores, recordings, slides,

photographs and vertical les on bells, chimes and bellfounding.

The second Singing Tower carillonneur was Milford Myhre,

who retired in June 2004 after 36 years of musical service to

the Gardens. Myhre studied at the University of Nebraska, the

University of Michigan and briey at the Royal Carillon School

Jef Denyn in Belgium. Two CD recordings by Myhre are

available at the Tower and Garden Gift Shop.

William De Turk resigned in October 2011 after 18 years as

the Gardens third carillonneur. He was assistant carillonneur

and librarian from 1993 to 2004 before being promoted to

carillonneur. De Turks interest in research in the eld of carillons

and bells has resulted in 11 published articles. Dhollander will

now continue the tradition of talented and awarded Signing

Tower carillonneurs.

The Singing Tower carillon is a collection of 60 stationary bells

connected to a piano-like instrument that plays music at the top

of the tower. Much like a quarterback for a football team or a

conductor for the symphony, a carillonneur is the face behind

the music of the Singing Tower.

With 60 bells ranging in weight from 16 pounds to nearly 12tons, the Singing Tower carillon was built in 1928 by John Taylor

Bellfoundry, Ltd. of Loughborough, England. Maintained to the

highest standards, this world-class grand carillon was the rst

of four carillons in Florida. There are approximately 200 in North

America and 600 throughout the world.

For more than 50 years, Florida Southern College has

brought spectacular performances to Polk County through

its Festival of Fine Arts. Te Festival is a nine-month

celebration of the performing and visual arts through the

talents of special guests, faculty and students.

In its 2012-2013 season, the Festival of Fine Arts will

showcase a delightful variety of musical theater, classical

choral works, drama, symphonic music and gravity-defying

acrobatics. Tere will be four special events this season:

On Nov. 3, TeatreWorks Florida brings to campus Legally

Blonde Te Musical, performing the musical theater version

of the popular lm about not-so-dumb law student Ellie Woods.

For almost 60 years, the National Circus of the Peoples Republic

of China has dazzled audiences around the world with its

astonishing acrobatics, and on Dec. 4, the troupe will perform on

the FSC campus in a must-see event.

Longing and betrayal are the themes of Puccinis classic opera,

Madama Buttery, which will be staged by the Imperial

Symphony Orchestra at FSC on Jan. 9, with soprano Adrienne

Danrich in the role of Cio-Cio San and FSC faculty and student

in supporting roles.

Up With People is a beloved troupe of young performers from

20 countries that charms audiences with a positive message about

humanitys common bonds. Teir newest show, Voices, will be

staged on Feb. 9.

Te FSC Music Department draws on its talented roster of students and

faculty for several performances during the season. Among the notable

concerts planned is En Masse, a performance of Schuberts majestic

shorter works by the master. Te FSC Opera Teatre presents Gianni

Schicchi, Puccinis comic opera of greed and deception, on March 21.

Also, there will be performances by the Chamber Singers, the Jazz Band

and a Christmas Gala, Home for the Holidays, on Dec. 8.

Te Faculty Artist Series gives professors the opportunity to shine as

performers, and they do, with instrument and voice. Of special notethis season will be a concert by clarinetist Stacey McColley on Nov.

27, performing works by Mozart and others in duets and trios. And

mezzo soprano Diane Stahl shares an evening of beautiful music with

colleagues and friends Paula Parsch, piano, and John Tomasson,

baritone, performing works by Brahms.

Te Vagabonds are FSCs theater troupe, and they have

Women; and Te Boys Next Door, by om Grin, a

funny yet touching story of four mentally handicapped men

who live in a communal residence.

As always, the Melvin Gallery at FSC has visual art

exhibitions throughout the season, and the Gallery is open

during Festival performances in addition to its weekday

works by these expressionists through Nov. 2; and Chinese

The oft asked question makes Executive Director Jane Waters

Thomas smile. Its not easy to answer because the organization is

continually adding ways to reach people through art.

Founded in 2006 as a for-prot gallery located in an Eloise citrus

avoring plant, the organization featured three artists: Karen

Retana, Rick Powers, and Buddy Sears. With the blessings of

founders and benefactors Niv Ben Yahuda and his wife, Karen

Retana, Waters added community art classes. She soon delved

into a variety of programs targeting diverse groups healing arts,

art in public places, art in education, and an urban art initiative,

including the Visual Arts Center, scheduled to open in December,

which will serve teens and young adults interested in the arts.

What began as Arts Ensemble International a for-prot gallery is now a non-prot community arts organization known as Arts

Ensemble Education Foundation and Healing Arts Center, or Arts

Ensemble, for short.

The Foundation includes featured artist Retana, ve resident

artists, and two resident writers.

Resident artists are diverse in their ages, backgrounds, and style

of art, but they share a desire to use art to help others. They are

are Se`an Yost, an up and coming talent; abstract artist Tinia;

award-winning found object sculptor Trent Manning; muralist and

Florida landscape painter Rick Powers; and watercolorist and glasspainter Deborah Boone.

Resident writers are Mary Joye, a mental health counselor and

writer serving as the organizations historian, and Donna Kelly, an

author contributing public relations and marketing skills.

Each artist creates onsite and adds a special talent to community

outreach. Powers and Tinia work with Alzheimer patients. Se`an

leads teen arts and Boone assists in healing arts. Manning helps

out where needed.

The artists that are part of Arts Ensemble Education Foundation

were specically chosen because of their background in the

arts, Waters Thomas said. As an arts education program, it was

important to me to be able to reach as many people as possible

and these artists are beautifully unique all of them.

The Starving Artist Sponsorship program allows patrons to support

the artist of their choice. Donations will be used to fund outreach

provided by the artist and to offset living expenses, allowing more

freedom to create art.

The doors o the Ritz Theater

are opening again to welcome

visitors to the Historic Main

Street District o downtown or

entertainment and local events.

Originally built in 1925 or

vaudeville shows and silent

movies, the Theatre has been

remodeled several times inan attempt to fnd its niche in

our County. This newest bright

and classy version will have

600 removable chairs to allow

an array o possibilities rom

reunions and seminars to stage

shows and music productions.

Recent renovations have uncovered signatures on the walls by

perormers rom vaudeville to country rock which enhance the

historical signifcance o this memory-flled local landmark.

In October 2012, the Stage came back to lie with a newly installedroyal blue pleated Grand Drape with crushed velvet black back drops.

This phase was made possible by donations rom the community.

December should bring the installation o a replica o the original Ritz

Theatre sign being installed on the ront o the building. This phase

is a result o a undraiser through partnership with Main Street Winter

Haven, the Winter Haven Chamber o Commerce, and the Ritz Theatre

100, Inc. Board o Directors and those who donated to the cause.

When installed, the sign will LIGHT UP Central Avenue and will bring

notice to the 1925 Theatre, leading the way to its grand entrance, the

Lola Mann Lobby.

like a gigantic puzzle, the

acility is available or use as a

rental acility, meeting place,

or holiday parties, weddings,

reunions, and many other

cultural events to enhance the

historical downtown district o

performance, on Feb 01 by the B52s Band Dance Party

Dwight is the 2011 and 2012 King Of The World Elvis

Tribute Artist having won the most recent honor in

Memphis this past August. He has a huge following of

Frostproof Art League and Gallery began sponsoring a

monthly Art Walk on October 5.

The Art Walk takes place in historic downtown Frostproof on

Wall Street and Scenic Highway on the rst Friday of each

month through April. All artists and craftspeople are welcome

to participate. Items for sale must be made by the person

offering it for sale. Anyone interested in participating as an

artist may call Martha Neher at 863-635-7271 or Jenny Grenke

Art After SchoolFor children ages 6 through 10 began are held on Thursdays

beginning at 3:45 pm throughout the school year. Childrens art

classes are always free at the Frostproof Art League.

Art ClassesTom Freeman will give a class November 30 and December 1

from 10am to 2pm. $35.00 for members and $45.00 for non-

members. Please register in advance.

Pat Bowen teaches Oils and Acrylics Tuesdays from 5:30pm to

8:30pm. She begins a daytime class, Monday 9am to 12 noon,

in November.

3-D Art ShowEntries will be accepted on Monday, October 29 from 10am-

2pm and on Tuesday, October 30 from 10am-6pm. Entry fees

are $5.00 for one to three entries. Please, no more than three

entries per person. No early or late entries will be accepted.

Opening reception and awards will be on November 4 at 2pm.

Annual Meeting at All Saints Episcopal Church 31

years ago, and thats where they will return for this

years Annual Meeting on Nov. 12.

The event will be held in the new building addition at

All Saints church- The McClurg Building. It will begin

with a reception at 5:30 p.m. and the meeting at 6

p.m. in the Parish Hall on the third oor.

New ofcers and board members will be electedfollowed by the program: a viewing of the movie

titled History on Parade.

This is the 25th anniversary of the movie, a

reenactment of Lakelands history that took place at

a luncheon in The Oates Building during Preservation

Week in May 1987. It stars a host of community leaders

and is narrated by Lanier Upshaw.

Historic Lakeland members and friends are invited to

attend this free event. All Saints is located at 209 S

Massachusetts Ave.
