‘Give Peace a Chance’One man’s quest for fame and attention led him to kill one of the most influential

men in the history of music and pop culture in general. John Winston Lennon was

born October 9, 1940, in Liverpool, United Kingdom, and died December 8, 1980,

in New York after he was shot for no apparent reason other than he was “famous.”

Lennon was, and still is, an icon among men. One of the founding members of The

Beatles, Lennon furthered his musical career as a solo artist and made a lasting

imprint on society with his devotion to pacifism and political activism. His passion

for peace was so deep, in fact, that he was seen as a potential threat to the Nixon

administration. Politicians were afraid Lennon would use music to deter younger

Americans from voting for Nixon.

Lennon has always been seen as more than just an artist. He gave generations

of young people hope, touched millions of lives with his verse, and still continues

to do so to this day.

Remembering Pearl HarborIn the early morning, on December 7th, 1941, one of the most unforgettable

moments in history was about to occur. The Japanese laid fire upon the naval base

located in Pearl Harbor, Hawaii, instilling a state of disaster that not only shook the

military base, but the nation as a whole. The attack lasted only a mere two hours,

but fared to be extremely detrimental. The Japanese military obliterated 20 American

vessels, including 8 battleships and nearly 200 airplanes. This single attack marks the

beginning of the United States’ participation in World War II. Only one day after the

attack, the United States declared war on Japan, followed by Germany and Italy’s

declaration of war on the US two days later.

The United States military’s fine men and women put their lives on the line to

ensure American citizens are safe and sound. Please, thank a veteran today for their

valuable service to our country!

Fun Holiday Facts• Candy canes began as straight white sticks of sugar candy

used to decorate the Christmas trees. A choirmaster at Cologne Cathedral decide to have the ends bent to depict a shepherd’s crook and he would pass them out to the children to keep them quiet during the services. It wasn’t until about the 20th century that candy canes acquired their red stripes.

• The modern Christmas custom of displaying a “wreath” on the front door of one’s house, is borrowed from ancient Rome’s New Year’s celebrations. Romans wished each other “good health” by exchanging branches of evergreens. They called these gifts Strenae after Strenia, the goddess of health. It became the custom to bend these branches into a ring and display them on doorways.

• Christmas caroling began as an old English custom called Wassailing - toasting neighbors to a long and healthy life. The earliest collection of carols was published in 1521.

Soothing a Sore ThroatWe’ve all had sore throats around this time of year.

Your throat feels scratchy and may hurt when you swallow. What can you do to soothe a sore throat? And when is it a sign of a more serious infection?

Most sore throats are caused by viral infections such as the common cold or the flu. These throat problems are generally minor and go away on their own.

To soothe your irritated throat, keep it moist. “Ever notice that a sore throat seems worse in the morning? It’s because your throat gets so dry overnight,” says Dr. Valerie Riddle, an infectious disease expert at the National Institutes of Health. “Having lozenges or hard candies—or anything that stimulates saliva produc-tion—will keep your throat moist. It’s also important to drink plenty of fluids.”

The best way to protect yourself from the germs that cause these infections is to wash your hands often. Try to steer clear of people who have colds or other contagious infections. And avoid smoking and inhaling second-hand smoke, which can irritate your throat.

Here’s a few ideas to try:• Try hot tea with lemon or some hot soup.

• Keep your throat moist with lozenges or hard candies.

• Gargle with warm salt water or use ice chips.

• Cold liquids or popsicles can numb the pain. Throat sprays and over-the-counter pain relievers can help, too.

• Use a humidifier or vapor-izer, especially when

sleeping, to keep air from getting too dry.

• If the sore throat persists for several d a y s , c o n t a c t a h e a l t h c a r e professional.

Civil Disobedience at its Finest

States such as Ohio and California place great significance on December 1, which commemorates Rosa Parks Day. Known as “the first lady of civil rights,” Rosa Louise McCauley Parks gained a high level of notoriety as an activist in the Civil Rights Movement when she was arrested on Dec. 1, 1955, in Montgomery, Alabama. After refusing to give up her seat in the “colored” section of a segregated bus to a white passenger, Parks subsequently found herself in jail, arrested on charges of violating Alabama’s segregation laws and civil disobedience. Her stance on the bus that day inspired others and led to the Montgomery Bus Boycott, another pivotal point in the Civil Rights Movement, which did not end until more than a year later. Ultimately, Parks was an advocate for racial equality who found herself at the helm of the efforts to end segregation. Later in life, she received a number of honors, including the Presidential Medal of Freedom. She passed away at the age of 92, on October 24, 2005. Parks played an integral role in the Civil Rights Movement, and her legendary status will long be remembered.

Beat the Winter BluesShedding Light on Seasonal “Blahs”

As the days get shorter, many people find themselves feeling down. You might feel blue around the winter holidays, or get into a slump after the fun and festivities have ended. What is it about the darkening days that can leave us down in the dumps? And what can we do about it?

“Winter blues is a general term, not a medical diagnosis. It’s fairly common, and it’s more mild than serious. It usually clears up on its own in a fairly short amount of time,” says Dr. Matthew Rudorfer, a mental health expert at the National Institutes of Health. The so-called winter blues are often linked to something specific, such as stressful holidays or reminders of absent loved ones.

Shorter days seem to be a main trigger. Reduced sunlight in fall and winter can disrupt your body’s internal clock, or circadian rhythm. This 24-hour “master clock” responds to cues in your surroundings, especially light and darkness. During the day, your brain sends signals to other parts of the body to help keep you awake and ready for action. At night, a gland in the brain produces a chemical which helps you sleep. Shortened daylight hours in winter can alter this natural rhythm and lead to the winter blues in certain people.

Here’s a few things to try:• Getoutsideinthelatemorningandmid-afternoonsun.

• Whileyou’reoutthere,getmovingwithaneasyexerciselike walking.

• Don’t be a hermit!Make and keepsocial engagements.

• Consider supplementing your dietwith vitamin D each morning and melatonin at night. Both are shown to help with the winter blues.

If you’re feeling blue this winter, and if the feelings last for several weeks, talk to a health care provider. “It’s true that this seasonal malaise goes away on its own, but that could take 5 months or more. Five months of every year is a long time to be impaired and suffering,” says Rudorfer. “It’s generally quite treatable, and the treatment options keep increasing and improving.”

Winter takes shape long before its official beginning on Dec. 21, 2016. As early as October in some regions, the trees stand bare, their exposed limbs swaying aimlessly in the wind. The air is frigid, frosty even, and the orange, umber and red-hued leaves have drifted away, below and beyond. Autumn is no more. Winter is fast on the horizon. The winter solstice ushers in a new season of life and growth as the amount of daylight slowly increases, giving way for the emergence of fresh plant life. The circle of life continues, with no regard for sub-zero temperatures or snowfall. It is really quite beautiful, and worthy of much appreciation and awe.

As nature takes its course and winter subsists, many people find reason to celebrate. Various religious sects and cultures use this time for reflection and rededication, as winter is home to holidays such as Christmas, Kwanzaa and Chanukah. This season proves to hold a great deal of significance, in both the spiritual realm, as well as the natural realm, of our existence.
