Dress Down Day Benefits Neidlinger Scholarship

On Thursday, November 17th, in conjunction with the Great American Smoke Out, the annual Dress Down for Andrew was held. All monies collected benefited the Andrew Neidlinger Memorial Scholarship Fund that bestows an annual scholarship to a graduating Golden Bear football player, or cheerleader if no football players apply or meet eligibility.Andrew was a 2005 graduate of MAHS, a Golden Bear football player and team captain, and was an active member of his school and community. Andrew’s dress down days are held in conjunction with Kick Butts Day in April and the Great American Smoke Out in November because he was a committed member of the MA Teens Against Tobacco (TAT) while a student at Mahanoy. The Andrew Neidlinger Memorial Scholarship is administered through Schuylkill Area Community Foundation www.sacfoundation.com . All donations are tax deductible. The Foundation is a collection of philan-thropic funds, each created by a different donar for a variety of purposes. Each fund retains its own identity, donor defined objectives and benefits from pooled investments with other funds. Gifts to the Foundation are invested according to Foundation policy, and grants are then made from these permanent funds to qualified local charitable organizations as well as in the form of scholarships and awards. Please contact Eileen Kuperav-age, Executive Director at [email protected] or Sharon Koszyk at [email protected] if you wish to make a donation at any time.Thank you all for your generous and ongoing support of The Andrew Nei-dlinger Memorial Scholarship.

Annual Bloomsburg Math Competition A Popular Fall Activity

In 16 years it’s tripled in size, peaking this fall with more than 300 students representing 24 high schools from across Northeast Pennsylvania. BU’s annual Math Contest has become quite the targeted fall event for many schools, some of which enter multiple teams to compete in brainteasers, quiz bowl, and the popular Game of 24 card challenge. Along with the Math Club, students and faculty from the Department of Mathematics, Computer Science and Statistics coordinate and run the all-day contest. The three competitions vary in difficulty and work off a foundation of geometry, trigonometry, algebra, logic and statistics. Adding to the contest’s popularity are several alumni, who once volunteered with the contest as BU students, now high school teachers bringing their current students back to campus as competitors. The following Mahanoy students attended the Blooms-burg Math Competition on Tuesday, November 15: Matt Derr, Samantha Gnall, Matthew Reed, Dylan Minahan, Mark Lawrence, Peter Osifat, Mike Joseph, Liam Man-sell, Chris Davis, Nolan Yanchuck, Kyle Loughlin, Chassitty Ramos, Megan Bisco, Justin Letcavage, Seth Soriano, and Kayla Schmerfeld.

Mahanoy Area Wrestling

Are you thinking of joining a club or sport? Well, then you should consider joining Mahanoy Area wrestling team. The team is coached my Mark Lawrence and Sam Quick. Coach Lawrence has around twenty years of coaching experience. Coach Lawrence said, “I coach for the love of the sport and for the kids.” Wres-tling is a sport unlike any other. “It teaches you to work through more adversity than any other sport,” Coach said. Wrestling consists of one- on-one matches, where the two wrestlers try to win by pin, fall or by having the most points at the end of the match. One thing to keep in mind though is that wrestling is actually both a team and an individual sport. “I think it is a great team and individual sport, there is no truer team sport,” said Coach Lawrence. The wrestling season consists of dual meets, which are school vs school matches, and individual tournaments. The season starts in November and ends around March. “It is tough, physically and mentally...” Coach Lawrence said. The practices are not by any means a walk in the park. The only things needed to join the club are a hydration test, physical, wrestling shoes, and a never give up attitude. If you want to join the team, talk to anyone on the team or to one of the coaches. To those people that are scared to join because of a lack of experience, there is no better way to over-come those fears than just joining and trying it out,” said Coach Lawrence.

There are many different kinds of clubs in this school. They range from athletics to academic and everything in between. One academic club in particular is quiz bowl. It is a trivia competition with knowledge you already posses. There are two teams of four that try to answer questions faster than the other team and gain more points. The competition itself helps the students on the team realize that they have actually learned a lot from their years of school and are able to remem-ber it. Mahanoy Area competes against many schools in Schuylkill County, including Blue Mountain, Nativ-ity, Pottsville, North Schuylkill, and Tri-Valley. Quiz bowl covers categories such as math, science, geogra-phy, history, sports, English, religion, and mythology. A student does not have to be good at all categories. Quiz Bowl is a fun and positive learning experience for every student who wishes to test their knowledge with their classmates and other schools. On December 5th, Quiz Bowl traveled to Pottsville where they played Pottsville and North Schuylkill. Ma-hanoy lost two close battles. There are no requirements to join quiz bowl. The advisor of the club is Mr Nester. See him if you are interested in joining..
