Daily Life of Ancient Egyptians

• Prior to getting dressed, people in Egypt got their clothes out of a basket, usually found on shelves in their rooms.

• For breakfast, people in ancient Egypt usually ate a small meal of bread and fruit.

• Ancient Egyptians' overall diet consisted of grains, fish, vegetables, and fruits. The ancient Egyptians ate mostly grains because they took longer to spoil. The fruits and vegetables they ate consisted of onions, radishes, apples, peaches, and many more other fruits and vegetables. These were popular because they could be farmed all year round.

Daily Life • Ancient Egyptians lived in mud brick

houses. The bricks were made from a mixture of mud, straw and stones.

• Furnishing in houses consisted of stools to sit on and chests to store possessions in.

• Beautiful wall paintings made Egyptian  houses ornate and unique.

• Their clothing was woven from flax plant to make the fabric linen.

How Do We Know About Hieroglyphics AndHow To Decipher Them?

• In 1799, French soldiers found the Rosetta Stone • Joan Champollion, a French scholar, decoded the Rosetta Stone by

looking at the two types of hieroglyphics inscribed in it and the Greek inscribed in it.

• This made it possible to decode the ancient text, so if you go to Egypt, you’ll be able to read the hieroglyphics!!!

• Hieroglyphs look like pictographs, but represent sounds, so you’ll be able to decipher an old language while looking at pictures!

• The Rosetta Stone unlocked mysteries of the ancient civilization, so don’t worry, you won’t be confused.

Egyptian PyramidsImagine how hard it was to stack over 2,300,000 blocks of stone that are about 2.5 tons each! That was what laborers had to do in the process of building the Great Pyramid of Giza. So, travel to ancient Egypt and visit the same site that over 4,000 years ago, in 2000 B.C., laborers were building the Great Pyramid. Come to ancient Egypt and admire these great structures!

Who, How, When,  and Where Were Pyramids Built

• From 3000BC to 2500BC, Egyptians devoted much of their energy to building great structures. This was during the Old Kingdom, when all of the pyramids were built.

• Pyramids were made as burial tombs for Egypt’s pharaohs and were filled with any necessity that the pharaoh would want during their afterlife.

• Peasant farmers built the pyramids because they were required to spend a number of weeks on construction.

• Pyramids were built along the west side of the Nile River, the land of the dead.

• Some pharaoh's tombs were built in the Valley of the Kings to elude robbers. It was a burial area cut into the side of a mountain, yet thieves still managed to find the vast majority of the pyramids.

The Evolution of the PyramidsThe first form of pyramids were mastabas. Then, to make the tomb more decorative, Egyptians added more on the top of the mastabas to make Step Pyramids. Don’t they look similar to ziggurats? Eventually, the ancient Egyptians filled in the gaps in between the levels of the Step Pyramids to make what we imagine a classic Egyptian pyramid.

   The Layout of a Pyramid

• Pyramids were part of a funeral complex- a processional causeway, which links the funerary temple to the pyramid, solar barques (sun boats)which were buried on the four sides of the pyramid, and finally, mastabas and other smaller pyramids where family, nobles, and people of the pharaoh's court were buried. Come to ancient Egypt and admire all of the hard work that ancient Egyptians put into these breathtaking structures!

•  In pyramids, there was anything from a pair of sandals to a piece of food! People buried things that were thought to be needed in the pharaoh's afterlife. Internal organs (besides the brain, which Egyptians considered worthless) were put in    jars put in the pyramid.
