BYOD Benefits...• Learning anytime, anywhere

without schedule or access restrictions

• Parent/student -flexibility in device choice

• Funding- resources shifted to other programs or tech.

• Personalized (student choice) devices

• Devices are commonly more up- to-date with newer features

• No updates, repairs or maintenance

• Cost-effective, works with decreasing technology budgets

• Allows for immediate application in the classroom

• Competitive pricing of tablets, smartphones, and laptop computers—BYOD a viable option for many families

• Network security concerns(data protection/student privacy)

• Multiple platforms and devices

• Parent-financed, not a viable option for some districts

• Requires a shift in pedagogy and a new approach to education

• Update network infrastructure and increase bandwidth

• Professional dev.

• Off-task behavior, inappropriate use of devices

• Requires buy-in from all stakeholders (parents, students, staff, administrators, school board)

• Mobile device limitations- (screen size, battery life, lack of keyboard, software compatibility, support for Flash and other multimedia files)

• Equity

BYOD Challenges...

Page 8: An Intro to (BYOD/BYOT) · Test your Knowledge 1. More than half of students in grades 6-12 access the Internet at home through a 3G/4G device. 5. Most students are not concerned

• Choice – Learners are diverse. We recognize this by allowing learners to choose the

device and applications most suitable for them.

• Anywhere/Anytime– Teaching and learning occurs inside and outside the classroom. Diminishes the

home-school divide.

• Individualized – By having our own devices we can each have the tools, shortcuts, widgets and

add-ons that are the most relevant to us.

• Preparing for the future – Our students will move into BYOD environments at intermediate, college,

university, work place.

• Flexible Learning – Creating flexible learning environments that facilitate collaborative and individual

learning.

• Digital Fluency – Empowering teachers and students to become digitally fluent and responsible

users of technology.
