What is BYOD?BYOD stands for Bring Your Own Device, and it means literally that! Students and Teachers will be allowed to bring their electronic devices to school and use them for educational and instructional purposes.

For the purposes of BYOD, “Device” means a privately owned wireless and/or portable electronic piece of equipment that includes laptops, netbooks, tablets/slates, iPod Touches, cell and smart phones.

What are our goals for BYOD?

• Promote higher order thinking, creativity and other 21st century skills

• Increase student engagement

• Promote greater collaboration (between teachers/students/parents) using Web 2.0 tools

• Improve student access to technology/digital resources

• Integrate technology seamlessly into the curriculum

• Increase project based learning activities

• Raise achievement levels in core content areas

• Model good digital citizenship

When will devices be used?

BYOD Non-Negotiables

• Posted in the building and classrooms:– Devices are the responsibility of the

student– Not for calls, social texting, or non-

instructional social media– Comply with teacher requests to put

down devices or close screens (“device down”)

– Must use CCSD Wi-Fi network at all times– NOT record audio or video, or take

photographs of students or staff for any reason whatsoever without express written consent from the teacher and individuals to be recorded

Facts You Need to Know

• Students are responsible for the security and operation of their own devices

• Students/parents should record and keep on file the serial # of their device

• CCSD is not financially responsible for lost/stolen devices

• Technical support will not be available at school

• Charging of devices must take place at home

• Devices should be in their locker, or be carried with them, at all times

Equity

• BYOD is being integrated into our classrooms to enhance our students’ education.

• Alternatives to using personal devices may be included in activities requiring their use. Those alternatives could include: classroom desktops, netbook carts, iPad carts, pencil and paper tasks and group work

• September 18th - Parent letters distributed in participating BYOD classrooms

• September 27th - Signed parent letters due to BYOD teachers

• BYOD sticker placed on cover of agenda to indicate participating students once signed parent letters are returned

Will I have to purchase a device for my student?• No

Whose responsibility is it to ensure the security of my student’s device ?• Students are ultimately responsible

for their own device. The school is not responsible for loss or damage to property.


Will students need their devices every day?• No, students will not need to bring

their devices every day.

How will students know when to bring in a device?• Teachers will notify students in

advance if they need to bring them.

Frequently Asked Questions(Parents)What is the purpose of the BYOD sticker?

• The BYOD sticker indicates parent permission to use a device in class.

• Students will receive a BYOD sticker once the signed parent letter is returned to the BYOD teacher.

• The BYOD sticker must be prominently displayed on the front cover of the student agenda.

• Students will only be allowed to use their devices if they have their BYOD sticker displayed in class.

No BYOD sticker = No BYOD

accessing the Wi-Fi or other programs on their device?• Students are responsible for their

own tech support. School system employees are not able to assist them.

How will my student be able to print from his or her device?• Printing is not available for materials

from a student’s personal device.


Will my student be allowed to charge his or her device at school?• Students must charge their device

at home and bring it to school fully charged.

BYOD

My laptop is not prompting me to choose a wireless network. What can do I do?• Click on the wireless connectivity icon in the

bottom tool bar of your screen --->• Choose CCSD BYOD or search for that

network on your device


(Students)I brought my device to school to use in the classroom, but my teacher said I couldn’t use it in her classroom. Can I still use it? • The teacher in the classroom has the final

say on procedures in the classroom. If he or she asks you not to use your technology tool, then you should follow those directions. Access is only available and not guaranteed for each classroom situation.


(Students)I just can’t get my device to connect to the network. Can I get some help from teachers at school? • Technology support is not available from

your teachers or other school staff in the building. It is not the responsibility of any school staff to troubleshoot individual devices during the school day.


(Students)I need to save my work to my lunch number on the school’s network. Why can’t I access this resource? • You are on the Guest Network. It is not the

same as the network you would normally access from a school computer. You will not see your lunch number folders and must save your work in another place. Some options include a flash drive, your own hard drive, or cloud storage sites such as Evernote or Dropbox.


(Students)I need to print from my device. How do I do this? • Printers are networked differently on campus

and will not be available when you login to the guest network. Some printing solutions may include:– emailing the document to your teacher to

print– save it to a flash drive or cloud storage

sites and print it from home or another campus computer

Keep in mind that using campus printers in the classroom or other learning spaces is at the discretion of the teacher or other campus administrator.


(Students)Why am I filtered on my own computer? Shouldn’t I be able to see what I want to on my own device? • Student filtering is a requirement of all

public schools. The Children’s Internet Protection Act (CIPA) requires all network access to be filtered, regardless of the device you use to access it while in a public school. Your laptop or phone is the device; the network you are using while at school belongs to CCSD and will be filtered.


(Students)Why can’t I use my device in non-BYOD classrooms?• The privilege to use a device is in BYOD

classrooms only. Additional classrooms may be added throughout the school year.
