We are glad that you are here to worship the Lord with us.Alleluia! Christ is risen!

FIRST READING: Acts 10:3443

Peter’s sermon, delivered at the home of Cornelius, a Roman army officer, sums up the essential message of Christianity. Everyone who believes in Jesus, whose life, death, and resurrection fulfilled the words of the prophets, receives forgiveness of sins through his name.

34Peter began to speak to [the people]: “I truly understand that God shows no partiality, 35but in every nation anyone who fears him and does what is right is acceptable to him. 36You know the message he sent to the people of Israel, preaching peace by Jesus Christ—he is Lord of all. 37That message spread throughout Judea, beginning in Galilee after the baptism that John announced: 38how God anointed Jesus of Nazareth with the Holy Spirit and with power; how he went about doing good and healing all who were oppressed by the devil, for God was with him. 39We are witnesses to all that he did both in Judea and in Jerusalem. They put him to death by hanging him on a tree; 40but God raised him on the third day and allowed him to appear, 41not to all the people but to us who were chosen by God as witnesses, and who ate and drank with him after he rose from the dead. 42He commanded us to preach to the people and to testify that he is the one ordained by God as judge of the living and the dead. 43All the prophets testify about him that everyone who believes in him receives forgiveness of sins through his name.”

SECOND READING: 1 Corinthians 15:1926

Paul describes the consequences of the resurrection, including the promise of new life in Christ to a world that has been in bondage to death. He celebrates the destruction of evil and the establishment of God’s victorious rule over all.

19If for this life only we have hoped in Christ, we are of all people most to be pitied.  20But in fact Christ has been raised from the dead, the first fruits of those who have died. 21For since death came through a human being, the resurrection of the dead has also come through a human being; 22for as all die in Adam, so all will be made alive in Christ. 23But each in his own order:

Christ the first fruits, then at his coming those who belong to Christ. 24Then comes the end, when he hands over the kingdom to God the Father, after he has destroyed every ruler and every authority and power. 25For he must reign until he has put all his enemies under his feet. 26The last enemy to be destroyed is death.

GOSPEL READING: Luke 24:112

Evidently expecting to find Jesus’ corpse, some of his women followers go to the tomb with embalming spices. After a perplexing encounter with the empty tomb and angelic visitors, the women become the first to proclaim the amazing news of resurrection.

1On the first day of the week, at early dawn, [the women] came to the tomb, taking the spices that they had prepared. 2They found the stone rolled away from the tomb, 3but when they went in, they did not find the body. 4While they were perplexed about this, suddenly two men in dazzling clothes stood beside them. 5The women were terrified and bowed their faces to the ground, but the men said to them, “Why do you look for the living among the dead? He is not here, but has risen. 6Remember how he told you, while he was still in Galilee, 7that the Son of Man must be handed over to sinners, and be crucified, and on the third day rise again.” 8Then they remembered his words, 9and returning from the tomb, they told all this to the eleven and to all the rest. 10Now it was Mary Magdalene, Joanna, Mary the mother of James, and the other women with them who told this to the apostles. 11But these words seemed to them an idle tale, and they did not believe them. 12But Peter got up and ran to the tomb; stooping and looking in, he saw the linen cloths by themselves; then he went home, amazed at what had happened.

NICENE CREEDWe believe in one God, the Father, the Almighty, maker of heaven and earth, of all that is, seen and unseen.

We believe in one Lord, Jesus Christ, the only Son of God,eternally begotten of the Father, God from God, Light from Light, true God from true God,begotten, not made,of one Being with the Father; through him all things were made. For us and for our salvation he came down from heaven,

was incarnate of the Holy Spirit and the virgin Maryand became truly human. For our sake he was crucified under Pontius Pilate;he suffered death and was buried. On the third day he rose againin accordance with the scriptures;he ascended into heavenand is seated at the right hand of the Father. He will come again in glory to judge the living and the dead, and his kingdom will have no end.

We believe in the Holy Spirit, the Lord, the giver of life, who proceeds from the Father and the Son,*who with the Father and the Son is worshiped and glorified, who has spoken through the prophets. We believe in one holy catholic and apostolic church. We acknowledge one baptism for the forgiveness of sins.We look for the resurrection of the dead, and the life of the world to come. Amen.

COMMUNION HYMNS“I Know That My Redeemer Lives” HYMN 619

1 I know that my Redeemer lives! What comfort this sweet sentence gives! He lives, he lives, who once was dead;he lives, my everliving head!

2 He lives triumphant from the grave;he lives eternally to save;he lives exalted, throned above;he lives to rule his church in love.

3 He lives to grant me rich supply;he lives to guide me with his eye;he lives to comfort me when faint;he lives to hear my soul's complaint.

4 He lives to silence all my fears;he lives to wipe away my tears;he lives to calm my troubled heart;he lives all blessings to impart.

An organ interlude follows stanza 4.

5 He lives to bless me with his love;he lives to plead for me above;he lives my hungry soul to feed;he lives to help in time of need.

6 He lives, my kind, wise, heav'nly friend; he lives and loves me to the end;he lives, and while he lives, I'll sing;he lives, my prophet, priest, and king!

7 He lives and grants me daily breath;he lives, and I shall conquer death;he lives my mansion to prepare;he lives to bring me safely there.

8 He lives, all glory to his name!He lives, my Savior, still the same;what joy this blest assurance gives:

“Now the Green Blade Rises” HYMN 379

1 Now the green blade rises from the buried grain, wheat that in dark earth many days has lain;love lives again, that with the dead has been;love is come again like wheat arising green.

2 In the grave they laid him, love by hatred slain, thinking that he would never wake again;laid in the earth like grain that sleeps unseen;love is come again like wheat arising green.

3 Forth he came at Easter, like the risen grain,he that for three days in the grave had lain;raised from the dead, my living Lord is seen;love is come again like wheat arising green.

4 When our hearts are wintry, grieving, or in pain, your touch can call us back to life again, fields of our hearts that dead and bare have been;love is come again like wheat arising green.

The Triduum * The Three Days

Welcome to worship. This service begins Maundy Thursday and concludes with the dismissal from the Easter Vigil.

Maundy Thursday

Maundy comes from the Latin, Mandatum, and you can hear other derivatives in the word, too: mandate, mandatory, command, demand. On this night we hear Jesus give a new commandment: Love one another. We remember, also, how Jesus washed the feet of his disciples. During worship we have the opportunity to feel the water on our own feet as we are sent out to serve. Foot washing is, of course, optional; it is one of the many opportunities of spiritual practice during these three days.

The other focus of Maundy Thursday is the institution of the Eucharist, or Holy Communion. Jesus speaks to those gathered at table with him and shares the bread and wine – “Take and eat. Take and drink. This is my body; this is my blood.” We, too, hear the invitation to eat and drink as we come to the table of grace and forgiveness. At the end of worship, the banners and the elements within the chancel are removed, the candles extinguished – just as we remember how Christ’s life was extinguished. We depart in silence.

Good Friday

Good Friday worship begins with the congregation gathering in silence. During this service we hear and participate in the story of Christ’s death through word and song. We enter times of silence in prayer and meditation, reflecting on God’s gift and sacrifice. The choir’s songs guide our prayer and open our hearts to experience the story.

The wooden cross will be brought into the sanctuary toward the end of worship as we respond to the verse: Behold the lifegiving cross on which was hung the Savior of the whole world with Oh come, let us worship him. After the cross is in place, you’re invited to come forward if you wish to make a sign of reverence – bow, pray, kneel, touch the cross.

The Easter Vigil

Weather permitting, we will begin outdoors, lighting the Christ candle with new flame and bringing the light of Christ into the worship space. During the Vigil we hear many of the stories upon which our faith is built — the ancient stories of creation, God’s faithfulness through the ages, and ultimately the greatest gift of resurrection and life.

The season of Lent was used as a time of catechesis or education and preparation for baptism. During the Vigil, those who had been part of the catechumenate would come forward for baptism. In the years when we do not have a baptism at All Saints at the Vigil, all of us affirm our baptism and feel the waters of renewal.

Worship lasts about 90 minutes, and we gather for festive fellowship after we have finally proclaimed the “Alleluia! Christ has Risen!” that we have kept silent for the Lenten season.

Please join us.
