The Grapevine All Saints Lutheran Church ELCA September 2016 Pastor’s Perspective: Wow! There are moments when I wonder about things. You know – things; the little things and the big things. I wonder whether there will be enough time to cut the grass before it rains, and whether there is enough gas in the tank. I wonder whether some of the words in a previous sermon were acceptable to God. I wonder about those who are moving to The Redoubt in the northwest part of the U.S. I wonder what crises the next President of the U.S. will face. And then it happens. Right in the midst of all that wondering The Holy Spirit crashes in. It’s usually unexpected. At those moments I am absolutely certain that you and I are not floundering around in a sea of uncertainty, drifting alone without guidance or direction. I know with absolute certainty that God is keeping the promise, the divine promise to guide, inspire, and accompany each of us and all of us through the days and experiences of living. And when that happens, WOW! The crash of The Spirit has happened for me recently. I was invited to a public conversation about transitional housing in Bowie. Alpha House is where the ministry will happen. And during the meeting I met Dawn Hobson. She is a leader of Mt. Nebo AME Church which is a congregation located close to ASLC. Dawn and I have exchanged emails for months trying to meet. And there we were, setting a date because The Spirit put us together. I sat at a routine meeting of the ASLC Congregation Council in July and was awestruck to learn that your financial contributions to the ministries and activities here have exceeded the Estimates of Giving provided last October. And at the end of the first six months your generosity has caused ministry to continue and increase in Bowie and through the congregation’s contributions to the Metro D.C. Synod. The Spirit has touched you. You have noticed and acted. Thank You. A conversation about next year focused on the 500 th Anniversary of Martin Luther’s action that began the Protestant Reformation in Northern Europe resulted in ideas for a year-long theme at ASLC through a variety of activities. They are mere ideas at the moment. Yet they are The Spirit’s prompting. I was invited to a birthday party, a simple invitation. It was with people of Good Samaritan Lutheran Church. The celebration was a birthday and it was also a relationship with other Lutheran Christians whom The Spirit is blessing in ways that I am only beginning to understand. Each of these is guided by The Spirit. Each of these furthers God’s Mission through All Saints Church. Each of these strengthens our relationships with each other. Each of these makes the presence of the Risen Jesus, the Christ, more visible to the people of Bowie. Keep watch for the next time that The Spirit crashes in to you. Because when that happens, WOW! A few words from the Council President....

So I've been playing Pokémon Go. It's a good excuse to walk around town with my boys (and sometimes their friends). Upper Marlboro is kind of a hub of activity with lots of stops to gather equipment and lots of Pokémon to catch. It's not uncommon to run into 10 or more people walking around playing the game on an average evening. We started playing over the summer and some of my boys' friends would come over and we might walk around for hours, gathering equipment and catching imaginary monsters. It's made me think a lot about being available. I had to start playing a weird smartphone game to be available for these walks. We had to invite young people into our home to make space for them to be present. One of them started calling us his "bonus family." While we're walking around, waiting for Pokémon to show up or counting the meters until an egg hatches, we are also talking about school and work, church and family rituals, songs and movies. We're spending time together, talking about things that matter. There are lots of opportunities to be present. There are lots of opportunities to be available. But it might mean learning something as ridiculous as how many Pidgey candies it takes to evolve a Pigeotto. "Train children in the right way, and when old, they will not stray." - The Book of Proverbs Grace and peace,

John Summerlot

Synod Council Lay Representative The Synod Council has elected Kim Watson as the lay representative from the Maryland Conference. The 2016 Synod Assembly did not fill this vacancy on the Synod Council. Since our assembly, the conference identified the candidate, who is a member of All Saints Lutheran in Bowie, and at the Synod Council's July 30, 2016 meeting she was elected. To review all of our cur-rent representatives on the Synod Council, see http://metrodcelca.org/about-us/synod-council/ .

August 17, 2016 Council Meeting

President John Summerlot presided. Absent – Pastor Gary, Jim Sichelman Opening Prayer: Led by John Summerlot Opening Devotion: Ellen Hug led a discussion on chapter 5 of the book for the year Missional Renaissance, by Reggie McNeal. Agenda accepted and approved. Meeting minutes from July accepted as presented. Continued Business: None New Business: None Vision Topic: Development of a ‘Caring Tree’ that would function much like a phone tree. As the congregation reviewed the number of people who are on the congregation membership list, it was noted that some members have not attended in months or years. The council was in agreement that we should establish a team that reaches out to those who have not attended in more than three months. They will reach out via phone, or email if no phone number is provided, to let those members know of the current activities and opportunities to serve available at All Saints. The team will then ask the members if there is anything they need or if there is any way we can be of assistance, as sometimes the reasons for their absence is due to health or personal challenges. As a congregation it's important to think about our members and keep their well-being in our minds. The council will share with the Executive Committee their suggestions of individuals who would be strong members of the outreach team. At the September meeting we will discuss any progress in developing the team. Review of Reports – Reports included any progress in the ICNU initiative to cultivate leaders. Financial reports were submitted. Was noted that the current unified budget is $10,000 over the spending plan estimates. Donita noted that she was able to send approximately six months of benevolence donations to the synod. In addition, an Alpha House donation will be reviewed again later in the year. If there are ample funds for the congregation’s needs and facility needs, the council will approve to provide additional benevolence funds to Alpha House.

Learn - No written report. The team will be talking with youth and adult leaders for the upcoming year.

Serve – Written report submitted. Worship & Music – Written report submitted. Karen

Lee Banks will be transitioning into the altar service lead. Melissa Steiner will be transitioning into the Worship and Music Team lead.

Serve Team God's Work. Our Hands.

September 11, 2016 On September 11th we will join with the rest of the ELCA to take part in "God's Work, Our Hands" Sunday, a day dedicated to serving the communities in which we live. This year, like last year, all our "God's Work. Our Hands." volunteers will participate in one activity: a Stop Hunger Now meal-packaging event to be held at Grace Lutheran Church in their Fellowship Hall. Together with volunteers from Grace, we will assemble and package 15,000 dehydrated rice/soy meals to be shipped worldwide to those in need of food. (For more information about Stop Hunger Now, please consult the website: http:// www.stophungernow.org/what-we-do/.) After sharing morning worship and lunch in our Fellowship Hall on the 11th, we will travel to Grace Lutheran Church to begin the meal-packaging at 1:00. If we have 50 volunteers assisting, the packaging can be completed in approximately 2 - 2 1/2 hours. We will need an additional five to ten able-bodied persons assisting with the setup and breakdown of the event, loading and unloading 50 lb. bags of supplies. During the event, we will need two to four volunteers able to lift the 50 lb. bags to the packaging tables. Sign-ups for the event will take place after worship services through September 4. We hope you will join us for this fun-filled and inspiring service opportunity.

Apartment collapse impacts those with limited resources

"People who want to support the victims of the terrible explosion in Silver Spring can do so through the synod," says Bishop Graham. "One of our pastors is doing hands-on work with a community of people she knows, and the people have few resources."

On Aug. 10, 2016 an explosion and fire at the Flower Branch Apartments in Silver Spring, Md. killed at least seven people, and dozens more in the destroyed apartments were injured. The apartment complex is located in the Silver Spring neighborhood of Long Branch, where a majority of residents are low-income immigrants reports CASA Maryland.

The Rev. Rosario Hernandez, La Sagrada Familia Lutheran Ministry, said in a note to Bishop Graham: "I have been with the families affected by the explosion in Silver Spring. Two buildings were totally collapsed. According to a list that the victims have made by themselves, there are 118 affected people, many of them children. They are under stress. They do not know yet where they will go to live... I am coming every day to accompany the people and know their needs."

"Since the people lost everything, I think for now the best way to support them is [gift cards], and they can go and get the stuff they need," said Pr. Hernandez. Money collected through the synod will go to La Sagrada's efforts. "La Sagrada, along with the residents in the neighborhood, is collecting money, and we plan to buy Target and Giant gift cards and along with organizers of CASA Maryland give personally these cards to [those impacted]."

Alyson Jacobson, a member of All Saints, is also involved in the effort to help those affected by this tragedy. Alyson has supplied the church with other contacts who are providing assistance. Please contact the church office if you would like this additional information.

ASLC Women’s Book Group Plans for Fall 2016 The ASLC Women’s Book Group is taking a “summer break” and will meet again on Saturday, September 10, 2016. The book we will discuss is The Wright Brothers by David McCullough. The book has received outstanding reviews such as the following from the New York Times. “This is a story of timeless importance, told with uncommon empathy and fluency. . . . A story well told about what might be the most astonishing feat mankind has ever accomplished. . . . The Wright Brothers soars.” Our gathering will be held at the home of Louise Waynant. Breakfast will begin at 8:30, and the discussion around 9:00. The October Book Group meeting will be held on Saturday, October 9, when we will discuss The Turner House by Angela Flournoy. Reviewers have stated, “In this assured and memorable novel, Flournoy provides the feeling of knowing a family from the inside out, as we would wish to know our own. Flournoy’s finely tuned empathy infuses her characters with a radiant humanity.” The November 12 gathering will feature the book Just Mercy: A Story of Justice and Redemption by Bryan Stevenson. This highly acclaimed book was named one of the best books of the year by The New York Times, The Washington Post, and The Boston Globe, and has received many awards such as the Carnegie Medal for Excellence in Nonfiction. Descriptions of the book have included comments such as “brilliant,” “valuable and compelling,” and “riveting.” One reviewer stated “It is every bit as moving as To Kill a Mockingbird and in some ways more so…a stirring testament to the salvation that fighting for the vulnerable sometimes yields.” All are welcome to join the Book Group gatherings, whether you have read the books or would like to learn more about them. Come and bring a friend!

Our 2016 Ministry Fair was again a great success! The Stewardship Team thanks all who participated in any way. The Ministry Fair increased our awareness of the variety of ministries in which we are called to take part. Thank you to who all who offered a display and conversation and to all who came to see and to learn. We hope your interest will continue throughout the year.

Letter to the Romans

During AD 1515 Martin Luther lectured on the Letter to the Romans, and, in the next two years, on Galatians. Somewhere in this time the passage, 'The just shall live by faith' brought personal assurance to him that he was accepted by God—through faith alone. He wrote: “I felt myself to be reborn and to have gone through open doors into paradise.” Luther said about Romans: “The more thoroughly it is treated, the more precious it becomes, and the better it tastes”. This comprehensive 13-session, verse-by-verse, book-by-book study of the Bible from Cokesbury Press uses a three-dimensional approach. Each 13-session volume is based on the NIV translation. For more information about this course, please speak to the course facilitator, Sven Allenbach-Schmidt.

Thank you to all who participated in and survived the great community campout in August! More than 20 participants joined us for cookout, water balloons and camping. We introduced four people to the love of camping as they had their first experience with the All Saints community. Even though it was hot and sticky, we had so much fun enjoying time together. We're looking to schedule another camp out in October so stay tuned!

GROWING IN FAITH TOGETHER (G.I.F.T.) the learning program for children, youth, and adults on Sunday mornings at 9:45 am, will resume on Sunday, September 11. We'll participate in God's Work Our Hands activities on that day. Classes in the Fellowship Hall will begin the following Sunday, September 18. “Into the Promised Land” will be the title and theme of our study this year. We will use the BibleSong material “God’s People Enter the Promised Land, are Tested, Taken into Exile, and finally Return.” This is a continuation of the story we studied last year, “The Book of Moses.” We look forward to seeing everyone from pre-school through 12th grade, along with parents. You will have fun, hear some exciting stories, and learn something new each week. New this year - the G.I.F.T group will be working with the other service teams (i.e. Serve Team) throughout the year. We will be supporting some of the outreach, service and mission work All Saints participates in throughout the year. Activities will be age appropriate and will encourage family participation. Activities include volunteering at the Bowie Farmers Market to collect food for the Bowie Interfaith Food Pantry, clothing drives, Warm Nights, grounds cleanup and community cleanup, etc. Let us know your ideas on how we can BE A GIFT to the community!

Throwback Movie Night Scheduled!

We're hosting another family movie night on Saturday, September 17th in the Fellowship Hall. We've been taking votes via Facebook and so far looks like our throwback movie feature will be An American Tail. Join us as we watch the 1986 story of Fievel Mousekewitz and his family as they emigrate from Russia to the United States for freedom. When he gets lost he must find a way to reunite with them. Please bring a snack or drink to share. You are welcome to come in your pajamas and bring your own chairs or pillows to settle in and watch the show. We'll have tables and chairs set up as well.

JUST gRACE Open Forums

JUST gRACE is an intentional Spirit-led public conversation at All Saints Lutheran Church about racial justice. It includes book discussions, viewing of movies followed by conversation, small group sessions, and informal interaction. The public conversation has been stimulating, challenging and thought-provoking. The books, movies, small groups, and informal conversations will continue.

JUST Grace was formed as a response to a resolution of the 2015 Metropolitan Washington D.C. Synod Assembly “that its member congregations place on the agendas for their next congregation council meetings the consideration of this resolution and adopt a resolution of similar content.” The Congregation Council decided that the resolution be the work of the whole congregation and directed the planning group to determine the best way to accomplish that goal.

The JUST GRACE Planning Group has prepared a draft resolution. Now it is your turn to consider, discuss, and make recommendations about the draft resolution. There will be five Open Forums at which the draft resolution will be presented for discussion. Members of the Planning Group will lead the discussion. The Planning Group will then consolidate the comments from the Open Forums to revise the draft resolution and present it to the Congregation Council at its October meeting.

The OPEN FORUMS will take place on the following dates: Saturday, September 17 at 9:00 am as part of the scheduled JUST gRACE discussion. Monday, September 26 at 7:00 pm Sunday, October 2 at 9:45 am and 12:30 pm Wednesday, October 5 at 10 am All the Open Forums will be in the Southwest Classroom.

This is your opportunity to be heard and have your ideas and suggestions included in the resolution. The final resolution will be included in the 2016 Annual Report for consideration and approval at the Annual Meeting of the Congregation on January 29, 2017.

Who Are You?

The primary answer is that you are a baptized Child of God. There is also an answer that might be profound and also a bit personal that includes your hopes and dreams, what you like and what you don’t. But the easiest answer when asked “Who are you?” is to tell someone your name. It’s usually the first answer that is given. This happens when it’s asked by someone who is meeting you for the first time or who doesn’t remember your name after having previously met you.

One of the purposes of a congregation is to have relationships with others. The starting point in a relationship is for others to know your name. You know your name, of course. And you know the names of your friends. But not everyone knows your name. And that is a barrier to the purpose of building relationships.

There is one very easy way to overcome that barrier. Use your name tag when you are in church on Sunday mornings. Wear it. You’ll be surprised how much easier it is for others to begin a conversation with you. You’ll be surprised how easy it is for you to start talking with someone whom you have seen before and wanted to meet but just didn’t know how or what to say first. You’ll be surprised how quickly the barrier to building relationships will be removed. And you’ll be surprised when you get home and you forgot to take off your name tag before leaving the church building.

So look for your name tag in the boxes at the left of the front doors. If you don’t find yours, tell Pastor Gary or send an email to [email protected]. If you do find it, wear it. Enjoy being known and knowing others’ names. And put it in the basket by the office door when you leave so that it can be returned to the alphabetical boxes and be ready for you to wear next time. Thank you to Dave Conrad for helping Jean with the new name tags and for putting the name tags back each week!

Executive Summary of Worship and Music Ministry Team Meeting, July 30, 2016

Reflections about the First Half of Pentecost Much gratitude was expressed for the high quality of musical leadership provided by Hyojin Ahn, our Director of Music, as well as the inspiring instrumental and vocal musicians who enriched worship throughout the first half of Pentecost. To enhance congregational participation in the communion liturgy, it was agreed that ushers would wait until the “Lamb of God” music has been concluded before inviting the congregation to the altar for communion. Leaders will sing the “Lamb of God” with the congregation. Planning for the Second Half of Pentecost Pastor Gary presented the draft Service Music Plan Hyojin developed for July and August. Music planned for each Sunday reflects the Gospel reading for the day. The “COME” set of green paraments will be used during the second half of Pentecost. Liturgy for the second half of Pentecost through Christmas will be Setting Two, familiar to the congregation. Worship and Music Component of All Saints Website Fred Wentland suggested that team members review the content and images currently on the Worship and Music component of the web site to determine what needs to be updated. Currently, over 100 sermons can be found on the website. Heartfelt appreciation was offered to Fred for his dedicated service of recording the sermon each Sunday and diligence in updating the web site. Altar Service Update and Plans Special thanks were extended to Melissa Steiner for her outstanding leadership of the Altar Service and to the members of her team for their faithful support of worship services. Melissa and her team will plan an Ornament Making Party to which the congregation will be invited. With the sanctuary chairs in a curved configuration during Pentecost, used cup communion tray tables will be placed in a location more convenient for the congregation. Processional at the Beginning and End of Worship The team recommended that beginning with the first Sunday in August, there will be no procession at the beginning and ending of worship. Conversation will continue regarding whether to include a procession in worship every Sunday or just on festival Sundays. Ministry Fair The Worship and Music display for 2016 will be arranged in a manner similar to that used for the 2015 fair, with updated pictures and handouts. There will be opportunities for individuals to sign up for one of the many ways they can become involved with the Worship and Music Ministry. Pastor’s Report and Discussion Items Pastor Gary reviewed the Worship Schedule for the Second Half of Pentecost, Advent, and Christmas (August 2016-January 2017). Consecration Sunday will be held on October 23. Our guest leader will be the Rev. Leila Ortiz, newly appointed Assistant to the Bishop for the Metro Washington D.C. Synod. All Saints will participate in the City of Bowie sponsored ‘tour of houses of worship’ within the city on September 18 from noon until 5:00 pm. Next Meeting The next meeting of the Worship and Music Team will be held Saturday morning, November 5, 2016, at Louise Waynant’s home, with breakfast at 9:00 and discussion at 9:30. All are welcome.

Choir Rehearsal Resumes Choir rehearsal will be resuming on Thursday, September 8. SonShine choir (8:30 worship) will rehearse at 7:00 pm and Chancel Choir (11:00 worship) will rehearse beginning at 8:00 pm. Both choirs will rehearse together at 7:45 pm. Now is a great time to join the choir! Please contact Hyojin Ahn if you have any questions.

Ruth Ann Killion Honored as a Fellow of the American Statistical Association

On August 2, 2016, our own Ruth Ann Killion was honored as a Fellow of the American Statistical Association. This is the highest honor in her field and is limited to less than 1/3 of 1 percent of the members. Her citation reads: "For innovative leadership in redesigning key demographic surveys; for introducing methods for census evaluation and experimentation that point the way for census improvement; for leadership in the use of administrative records for censuses and surveys; for contributions to census coverage estimation, including research into multiple systems estimation; and for mentoring junior staff." Ruth Ann is deeply honored and humbled to be selected for this mark of distinction. Her mother Barbara, sister Miggy and grand niece Macy were able to attend the ceremony in Chicago and celebrate with her. My, the wine and hors d'oeuvres at the elegant reception were incredible! Ruth Ann was able to celebrate with the Fellows who nominated her, including government and academic colleagues and her dissertation director, Dr. Douglas Zahn, statistics professor Emeritus of Florida State University. Twelve-year old Macy was impressed with the speech about opportunities in the field by the President of the American Statistical Association, Jessica Utts, and is said to be contemplating a career in statistics in her future! THAT would make Ruth Ann ecstatic!

Karol Taylor Receives National Recognition for her Work in Career Counseling

All Saints is pleased to share that on July 1st Karol Taylor was honored by the National Career Development Associa-tion (NCDA) with the Outstanding Career Practitioner Award. With more than 3,000 members, NCDA is a pro-fessional membership organization that provides develop-ment, publications, standards, and advocacy for career prac-titioners. The Outstanding Career Practitioner Award rec-ognizes practicing career counselors, consultants, or educa-tors for outstanding performance in day-to-day service. Each of the following areas are considered: years of ser-vice, quality of service, and participation and leadership in professional associations. Karol served on Maryland Career Development Associa-tion’s (MCDA) Board of Directors since June 2004, where she began as President-Elect, moving on to President, then Immediate Past President. At the end of her three-year Ex-ecutive leadership tenure, Karol went on to serve as MCDA Publicity Chair through June 2016. In June, Karol was elected to serve as President-Elect of the Maryland Coun-seling Association. While in an Executive role, Karol dou-bled MCDA membership and annual revenue. As the Pub-licity Chair, Karol established a strong social networking presence, before social networking became the norm. Karol was also recognized by MCDA in April 2016 with a Lifetime Achievement Award.
