6. iPod Nano(Goals) Goals: It’s important for the NRHH President to have goals in mind
for the chapter and ideas for programs and new projects, as well as
ways to help the chapter increase its numbers. Alex has gone above
and beyond to help the Louis V. Hencken NRHH Chapter of Eastern
Illinois University and all of his E-board members.
▪ Recruitment: One of the biggest problems plaguing our NRHH was
the low numbers of those involved and wanting to join NRHH.
Alex has worked tirelessly to create changes to the
nomination/induction process to get more people involved and
excited about NRHH. Currently we have over 60 nominations for
15 open spots. On top of that he has been preparing what is to be
one of the best induction ceremonies for EIU’s NRHH yet. We are
very excited for all these potential new members thanks to Alex’s
hard work.
▪ Member of the Week and Snap Jar: Alex created two items of
recognition that have really helped our chapter grow closer. The
member of the week is a moving paddle that recognizes a
member’s outstanding contributions to the chapter. When a
member wins the paddle, they sign the back and choose who to
pass it onto next. The snap jar is passed around during the
meeting and member write down people, events, or really
anything that deserves recognition and they are put in the jar.
▪ Green Bandana Project: Every year, the president of our NRHH is
encouraged to create a program that means something to
themselves. They year, Alex has chosen to do the Green Bandana
Project which creates awareness and support for mental health.
Tables will be set up for a week in high traffic areas on campus. At
these tables students can take a pledge to support those with
mental health issues and help them find campus resources that can
help them. Those who take the pledge can then wear the bandana
or tie it on their book bag to show others that they can be one to
talk to about mental health issues. Students who take the pledge
also take a pamphlet that they can use to help direct anyone who
needs it to the proper campus resource. Alex has been working to
create a successful program that can help someone who really
needs it.

7. iPod Touch (Letter of Support)
To whom it may concern,
It is with great pride that I write this letter of support of Alex Martin for National Residence Hall Honorary
(NRHH) President of the Year. I have had the great pleasure of being one of the advisors for The Louis V. Hencken
Chapter of National Residence Hall Honorary at Eastern Illinois University (EIU) and being the direct advisor over our
NRHH President, Alex. This past seven months I have had the privilege of working with and witnessing Alex serve as
a passionate, supportive, and creative President for the EIU chapter of NRHH.
As an advisor it makes a huge difference if a student is passionate about the organization they are serving. As
president, Alex has served the EIU chapter of NRHH with so much passion that it was contagious. First with his
executive board members, Alex started working hard getting his newly elected executive board motivated over the
summer by checking in with them and challenging them to be prepared to hit the ground running when they returned to
campus. Alex then turned his attention to his general assembly members, encouraging these members to serve their
community both on and off campus. Passion is a great foundation for a President but being supportive and creative are
just as important for this prestigious role in an organization.
Being a supportive President helps keep morale high and the organization successful. As President, Alex
checked in with his executive board on a weekly basis. During these check-ins he would see how their individual’s
projects were going and seeing how he could be helpful in reaching a successful conclusion. As for the general
assembly, Alex keeps separate space during meetings for members so share announcements, accomplishments, and
service opportunities. Creating this supportive space during meetings lets members feel ownership over the biweekly
meetings. As a President Alex is supportive and passionate, adding creativity is what has really set Alex apart from all
other Presidents I’ve had the privilege to work with.
Constitutional changes and updates, comparing and investing service hours for the chapter, and facilitating a
revised and fresh new recruitment and selection process for our chapter. The changes and updates made to our
constitution were necessary to make sure we were still preaching what we practiced and continuing to hold ourselves
to be the top one percent of leaders on our campus. While working on constitutional updates, Alex came across a
discrepancy between our chapter and the other chapters in our region. We were hugely under representing ourselves in
the service pillar. Changing the amount of service hours required can be scary to current members, but Alex compared
what we were doing currently to other chapters as well as laid out a transitional plan to increase our hours. After these
changes were presented to our general assembly, there were a few tweaks and questions, but overall the changes were
made for the better of the group. Lastly, Alex has been working extensively on putting a fresh spin on our selection
and induction. Changing interview to writing bids about themselves helps make our NRHH chapter more of an honor
and less of a job position. Our chapter is really excited for all the changes and updates that have been made this year.
Thank you for taking time to read my words about Alex Martin, our NRHH President. I truly believe that
Alex has been an outstanding NRHH President this year and is an amazing candidate for the NRHH President of the
Year. Additionally, Alex is in good standing with Eastern Illinois University. I hope I have painted you a picture of
the passionate, supportive, and creative President that Alex has been this year and I hope you all see how wonderful of
a candidate he truly is.
Sincerely,
Lauren Bergholz
