History of NRHH at EIU
The NRHH chapter at Eastern Illinois
University was established in 1974, with the
first induction held on November 22, 1974.
The chapter inducted 23 members that year.
Today there are 23 active members.
The EIU Chapter has a long and rich
history. After being established, the
National NRHH files were housed on
EIU’s campus from 1974 to 1975.
Later, the NRHH National Office was
hosted on campus from 1981 to 1983.
The prestigious Richard Enochs
Scholarship was also developed at
Eastern in 1978-79. This scholarship is
still awarded today to a student leader.
In 1981, the NRHH pin was designed by
EIU’s Director of Housing and Dining,
Mark Hudson and the late Valerie Averill.
This pin is still given to every member
inducted across the country into NRHH. In
1983, NRHH received voting rights from
RHA. In the same year, EIU won School of
the Year.

History of NRHH at EIU
The EIU Chapter became The Louis V. Hencken
Chapter of National Residence Hall Honorary in
2007 in honor of President Emeritus, Mr. Louis V.
Hencken. Mr. Hencken started his EIU career in
1966 as an undergraduate student. He served as a
RHA Adviser for many years, and continued to move
through the Housing and Dining ranks until he
became Director of Housing in 1975.
Mr. Hencken then became
Vice President of Student
Affairs in 1992, and eventually
took over as President of the
University in 2001 until his
retirement in 2007. Mr.
Hencken is still active in the
EIU community and currently
serves as an instructor in the
College Student Affairs
Master's Program.

High Class Sustainability Efforts
Sustainability on Eastern’s
campus has been widely
recognized by all students
and staff. In the 2014-2015
academic year, a large,
aluminum can-filled
container occupied the space
of parking lot and gathered
trash for a whole year. The
culmination of all this
material needed to be
separated and properly
sorted so our NRHH chapter
took command and did just
that. It was a two day
process that required various
tools to dig into the massive
container and bags upon
bags to toss our recyclable
materials into.
Our chapter also hosted a seasonal opportunity for
our general assembly members to gather recycling
materials in each halls’ lobby space; this was known
as “Spring Greening.” The concept was that once a
week, small groups would work together in a
different quad to tackle each residence hall’s lobby
recycling and properly dispose of it. This helped to
reduce the piling up of unnecessary trash or
improperly recycled materials.
[6]
High Class Sustainability Efforts
Our chapter also conducted a dining audit which, over the course of six hours, we spent shoveling post-
consumed food into buckets then weighing them to find out exactly how much students were wasting by
the pound. This audit was conducted in a single day for a lunch period in one of our dining halls. Plans
for a larger scale audit are in the works to accurately display how much food is wasted in hopes for a
change in portion sizes.
Finally, our chapter hosted an energy saving
competition amongst the residence halls. In February, a
base measurement was take from each hall, then every
week until the end of March, a report was given out
revealing how much energy each hall had saved
provided by our meters on the exterior points of
campus. We encouraged residents to go outside more
and provided tips to sustaining energy when certain
electronics/appliances are not in use.

Working as a Family
(RHA&NRHH)
Hall Council Training
Camp New Hope
Our NRHH chapter works closely throughout the year with
EIU’s RHA. From the beginning of the year to the end, the two
work as a family to make residence life the best it can be.
NRHH and RHA teamed up together to create a
training session where all the hall councils on campus
attended to educate them on their positions and how to
be effective leaders in their hall.
Camp New Hope is a leadership retreat where RHA and NRHH bring
a small group of leaders to Camp New Hope to network with each
other, learn how to work with other leaders, and do some community
service.
[8]
Working as a Family
(RHA&NRHH) ROC Fest
Leadership Conference
The NRHH Leadership Conference is designed to engage community councils in collaboration and education. This conference mirrors regional and national conferences, but on smaller level. Each hall has a delegation, which develops a role call and attends sessions presented by other student leaders and professional staff members. The NRHH Leadership Conference will also have the participants engage in a community service project with lunch provided.
This event, hosted September 28-October 2 2015, was designed to promote friendly competition,
engagement and hall spirit between the different buildings that make our residential campus experience
great. Includes different daily activities such as the boat race, roller blading, bingo, and more.

Working as a Family
(RHA&NRHH) End of the Year Banquet
Addition to our Family
At the end of the year, NRHH and
RHA host an end of the year
banquet where various awards,
scholarships, and recognition for
those who have gone above and
beyond in their residence halls.
This is a point in which NRHH
and RHA come together as a
family and recognize each other
for a successful year. Every hall
council is invited to dine with the
executive boards and important
faces on campus that support the
residence halls.
Our family got even bigger this year as we elected two individuals into our Historian
position. By having two Co-Historians, our chapter has been able to reach out to the
community on an even more grand scale. After being elected for only two short weeks,
these individuals worked together with the already bonded family to bring four new
service events to the chapter including: trips to Salvation Army, Girls on the Run
involvement, Service To Go boxes at meetings, and a Birthday Box Book Drive with
Big Brothers Big Sisters of America. At our midterm progress report, our 23 member
chapter has a combined 111 hours of service to the community.

Supporting Our (K)ore Values
Recognition
Like Kim Kardashian is the queen of
Instagram, the Louis V. Hencken is the
King of Recognition. While Kim has
her multitude of selfies, we have a lot
of events that we have continued as
tradition as well as just started in the
recent year. In previous years, the
chapter has hosted a recognition week
where we recognize the many people
in housing and dining and thank them
for what they have done with small
gifts. Everyone in housing and dining
gets recognized for their hard work!
Each week there is paper passed around and a
jar, “the snap jar” where members can write
something wonderful that deserves
recognition. Another new initiative to the
chapter is “Geek of the Week”, members email
any good grades they have gotten for the week
to the President and they will get a roaming
paddle for a week!
At the end of the month every OTM winner gets a paddle and at the end of the year, the person and resident hall that writes the most OTMs will win an award!
[11]
Supporting Our (K)ore Values
Service
Our chapter of NRHH has developed and created more
service opportunities for all of our family members. The
Louis V. Hencken chapter has had many successful events
in the past year. One such event, Winter Wonderland,
occurs in December. This is an annual event that invites
local families to celebrate the holidays with Santa and
other characters including Anna and Elsa! Our chapter
served over 30 families by providing a stress free holiday
environment which included presents, crafts, and snacks. .
Our chapter participates in a campus wide service
initiative called “Paws for a Cause,” where an
organization is paired with a local group and do
community service. Just like the Jenners and the
Kardashians, our chapter and local nature center,
Douglas Hart, combined powers to bring a Haunted
Halloween Hike to the community. In addition to
Haunted Halloween Hikes, our family works to
landscape Douglas Hart’s grounds. When our family is
finished outside, we get to support the staff by
working desk shifts.
[12]
Supporting Our (K)ore Values
Service Continued
This academic year the chapter has been continuing other service traditions including our
campus famous Breast Cancer Awareness week. BCA includes a weeklong series of events
where members sell t-shirts to help raise awareness. As a culminating event, Pie an Eastern
Illinois University celebrity was added. This event allowed students to pie famous faces of EIU
including: the new university President, the director of housing and dining, professional staff,
and some executive board members of both NRHH and RHA. A dodgeball tournament pitting
residence halls against each other in friendly fire was added this year to keep things fresh for
our Dash Dolls. 100% of proceeds from all three events benefit local hospital Sarah Bush
Lincoln and The Mills foundation in Champaign Illinois for cancer research. In this single
week, our chapter raised over $6,000!
