Fall is an outstanding time to fish due to the bass aggressively feeding up for the winter.
During this time of the year fishing between fronts and looking for windows of non-‐bluebird skies will produce the best results.
A favorite tactic of mine for the early, cloudy, fall morning will be buzz bait moved slowly through the timber or a long cast parallel to the shoreline. Bass will smoke the buzz bait and if for some reason it misses have a dark fluke tied on to send in for a back-‐up cast and be ready to set the hook.
Another great fall tactic is the square bill crankbait, I prefer the XB-‐1 from Xcite Baits. The crankbait allows quick coverage of water and the erratic motions trigger violent strikes. When I find myself fishing post-‐front, a finesse jig with a craw trailer is a must. I position the jig tight to the structure, whether it be rock, timber or brush pile. Remember in post-‐frontal fishing to work the bait subtly and slowly for the best result. During this time of the year you can go from power fishing to finesse in an hour’s time so make sure you bring a full assortment and be ready to change tactics quickly.
We fished Canyon South and Cottage last weekend and between three anglers we caught 60 bass in just under a half-‐day. The air temp was 35 at takeoff and the water temperature showed 68. Bass were active on the west bank chasing shad, but our best result came out of the deep timber fishing a Carolina Rig. At one time we went five-‐for-‐five catching fish up to 6 pounds. The fish are keyed on shad this time of the year so a Carolina Rig with a Fluke or any other plastic swimbait will work great. Since we were fishing post-‐front we worked the rig slowly and waited for the light tap, followed by a giant hook set.
A key tip in fishing the Carolina Rig is to have the weight in constant contact with the bottom. For those not familiar with the Carolina Rig here it is pictured below.
Comanche Star Ranch has everything needed to be a diverse and outstanding fishery.
I had the pleasure to fish several of the lakes with Larry King and Steven Bardin. One thing I have noticed immediately about Comanche Star and Larry is the commitment to getting it right in the management of the fish. There are not many places in the lease world that show this commitment and that will take Comanche Star to the next level and quickly. Along with commitment you need expertise and that is where Steven from Texas Pro Lake Management comes into the picture. His vision of what these lakes can become is outstanding and his knowledge of the growing process puts him in the top tier of fisheries biologists. As a professional angler when you find people with that type of drive and commitment you want to be involved in the project anyway possible.
If you have any questions or would like to set up a time to fish, please contact Larry and he can provide you with my contact information.
