• Greek music history extends far back into ancient Greece, since music was a major part of ancient Greek theater.

• The word "music" is derived from the nine muses of ancient Greece, who were goddesses ruling over the arts and sciences.

Greek Music and Mythology Instruments in ancient Greece: • double-reed aulos and the • plucked string instrument (like pandura), • the lyre, especially the special kind called a kithara, • drums, • cymbals and • pipes. Ancient Greeks used music to honor their gods. Hermes and Apollo are Greek gods connected with music, and

also Pan, Orpheus, Dionysus and the Graces (daughters of Zeus).

Music in Ancient Greek Education

Music played an important role in education.

Greek boys started learning music as early as 6 years old.

Students used singing to help memorize odes such as the Iliad and the Odyssey.

Pythagoras, designed a mathematical theory behind musical tones in the 500s B.C. that's still used in modern times.

Byzantine Empire and After Constantinople's Fall

During the Byzantine Empire (330 A.D. to 1453 A.D.), Greek music was influenced by Eastern liturgical chanting.

Music was monophonic, without harmony and lacked instrumental accompaniment.

Greek Folk Songs

Greek folk songs, refer to the songs of two different periods of Greek history, include:

• the akritic (expressed the struggles of the Greek warriors defending the borders of the Byzantine Empire)

• klephtic movements (covered the end of the Byzantine period and the beginning of the Greek Revolution, leading to Greece's independence in 1821).

• Greek folk music (Dhimotika tragoudhia) is found all throughout Greece accompanied by clarinets, guitars, tambourines and violins, and include dance music forms like syrtó, kalamatianó, tsámiko and hasaposérviko.

19th-20th Century Music Revival

Greek music was reborn in the 1800s.

• Nikolaos Mantzaros expresses common experiences in everyday Greek life.

• Composer Kleon Triantafylou, known as "Attic," created one of the first repertory troupes in his famous "Mantra tou Attic.".

• Sofia Vembo was a leading Greek singer and actress. She became best known for her performance of patriotic songs during the Greco-Italian War, when she was dubbed the "Songstress of Victory".

The Rebetiko movement was influenced by two million Greek refuges coming from Asia Minor and among the most significant songwriters and lyricists of this period are considered Vassilis Tsitsanis, Manolis Chiotis and Giorgos Zambetas.

Mid-20th Century and Contemporary Greek Music

• Entekhno arose in the late 1950s and is orchestral music with elements from Greek folk rhythm and melody.

• Greek youth turned to pop and rock music in the 1960s till nowadays and pop music was influenced by both British and American rock music, along with Greek folk songs.
