WE ARE AFDAcademics for Development was founded in Leuven in 2013 to offer students the opportunity to have social impact in developing countries in a purposeful and sustainable way. AFD is a non-profit student organisation inspired by the increasing importance of student entrepreneurship and consulting as a vital part of a students education. Through our projects AFD aims to provide practical experience and professional skills complementary to the academic program and necessary to kick-start a professional career. We do this by organising both social-impact projects and informative events.

What started off with three projects in 2013, has evolved to 11 different projects for the academic year 2015-2016, clearly illustrating a high student interest and as a consequence our quick, but sustainable growth. Students from 11 different faculties work together on our projects in multidisciplinary teams of 5 to 6 to solve real problems in cooperation with a company, local start-up or NGO, During the summer, the students then get the opportunity to travel to the project country for 6 to 8 weeks to put theory into practice in cooperation with the local partner and population. In Leuven, 11 different faculties offer students the possibility to valorise the AFD project in their curriculum. The LLN branch is on the right track to achieve the same academic recognition at the UCL.

In addition, AFD organises a variety of events throughout the year to inform students about social and innovative entrepreneurship. We aspire to reach as many students as possible. Some of the speakers that we welcomed to our events are Karel van Eetvelt, Rudi Vranckx, Jeanne Devos, Alexander De Croo, Guibert del Marmol and Piet Colruyt.

AFD is currently based in two cities, Leuven and Louvain-la-Neuve. In both cities a dynamic team of motivated students, consisting of 9 board members in Louvain-la-Neuve and 21 in Leuven, runs the daily management of the organisation. Our presence in two of Belgiums major university cities offers us a wide reach and visibility among students.

PROJECTSMy experiences in being part of an AFD team, as project student as well as coach, have broadened my vision,

opened my mind, increased my skills and expanded my group of friends, all this through the realization of feasible and sustainable projects for the South. I would recommend it to everyone!

Marie PietersMaster student Business - Vlerick Business School - AFD Project Coach

    Multidisciplinary teams

Projects are selected on a year-to-year basis after careful screening and consideration by our project development team. Our human resources team then inter- and reviews potential project students to ensure only the candidates with the best/relevant skills and abilities are assigned to each project.

We believe in the strength of multidisciplinarity. Therefore, a team typically consists of a combination of students with a background in business management, civil engineering, law, medicine, psychology and political sciences.

    Support

While a certain amount of autonomy and creativity is expected, AFD helps students on their way by providing the necessary support and guidance. We provide, for example, each team with the necessary support and guidance in the form of an experienced coach. For specific matters concerning finance, business economics, law, marketing and IT, the project teams can turn towards towards support groups formed by professionals and alumni with the relevant expertise.

We believe that teams should have large ownership over their projects to realise their full potential. The local partner, the coach and the board support them in this through workshops and continuous feedback.

    Social & Sustainable

After almost a year of intensive preparation, the team leaves for a period of approximately six to eight weeks, during the summer, to implement their solutions and achieve their goals. The utmost care is taken to ensure that these solutions are socially, financially and culturally relevant and sustainable through intense cooperation and knowledge exchange with the local population.

AFD revises the projects every year according to the workload and their relevance for the local population. As AFD strives to have a sustainable impact, we set great store by guaranteeing a long-term strategy for and viability of our projects which we put into practice during the summer internship.

    Snrgie, Senegal 2013-2014, 2014-2015 & 2015-2016

Snrgie aims to provide clean, safe and affordable energy solutions fitted to the needs of the rural population of Senegal, by selling and installing compact solar home systems, with an extensive after sales service. By collaborating with a microfinance institution, even the people with a very low income can take part. They are proud to announce that 30 systems have been installed and 80 more are on their way. A local manager has been recruited to sustain and increase growth in the long term.

The main goal of this project was setting up a job office to match potential employees and employers for the informal sector, by informing the local population, arranging meetings with major stakeholders, advertising through different channels and purchasing equipment. A local, educated young man now runs the office in Calvinia, South Africa, and people in need can borrow equipment necessary for their jobs for free.

The objective of this project is the development of a viable business dedicated to the production and commercialization of soap in the region of Bandulu, in the Democratic Republic of Congo. Indeed, this region is rich in palm oil that local communities could use in order to produce qualitative soap and support the economic development of the region. In addition, greater use of soap would contribute to the improvement of public health in Congo.

EVENTSThe second focus of AFD is the organisation of a wide range of events, such as panel debates, lectures, job and student fairs to an audience containing students from all faculties. These events all aim to achieve our three main goals.

First of all, they raise awareness to the importance of sustainable development and social entrepreneurship among the broader student community. Secondly, the events are meant to make people familiar with AFD and increase our brand awareness. Lastly, they provide an ideal networking opportunity for both students from AFD and the rest of our audience.

    OUR ASSETS

    Broad student publicity

As a student organisation in Leuven and Louvain-la-Neuve, AFD is gaining a market share on a national level. We are represented in nearly every faculty and on most social media. Therefore the publicity offered by AFD is both large and diverse.

Feature your logo on our website, brochures, online communication and social media. Or sponsor an event and appear on posters, flyers, online marketing, roll-up banners and more!

    Active contact with high potentials

Our organisation attracts motivated and team-oriented students, with outstanding academic records and extracurricular experience.

All our members are carefully selected by our HR-team, with external advice from professionals in the area of Human Resources. The combination of an international internship and the skill development built throughout the year and offered by AFD is our unique strength and makes us an ideal recruiting ground.

A complete CV booklet of AFD members is available for our partners. It is also possible to directly get into contact with our members, for example via speeches on our events or a stand on a fair.

    Credible Corporate Social Responsibility

Every year the project students put their hard work into practice in the project countries to realise the ultimate goal of AFD: achieving social impact in the developing world. As a result of the extensive preparations and high grade of professionalism, we realise sustainable and tangible social impact. Through our events we try to raise awareness of these results among the student community.

A partnership with AFD thus credibly enhances the corporate social responsibility of our partners. Supporting our organisation also offers the opportunity to be seen cooperating with a professional and dynamic team of young and motivated people.

AFD is looking for structural partnerships that can take many different forms. All our partnerships will be tailored to your needs and the specifics of your company. We are happy to elaborate on this during a personal meeting. A partnership can consist of the following three pillars.

    1. Sponsorship of the organisation and events:

You can financially support the organisation or a specific event. Your contribution will have a direct, durable and lasting social impact.

    2. Workshops, speakers and consulting advice:

Support our projects by providing helpful workshops, speakers for events or professional consulting advice for our students and their projects.

    3. Technical and organisational support:

The organisation could use professional legal, actuarial, organisational and structural advice and guidance to provide an even better service.

WHAT ABOUT AFD?In a fast changing environment, A.T. Kearney strongly believes in the need for entre-preneurs motivated to have an impact. We are strongly convinced by AFDs mission statement and are willing to work together. We want to help students reach their goals and foster success in their different projects.

Ludovic BattardSenior Business Analyst - AT Kearney

Academics for Development was founded in the true spirit of social entrepreneur-ship. We are not here just to give a fish, nor to teach how to fish. We will not rest until we have revolutionized the fishing industry. And to skyrocket this revolution, the business world is the keystone to give means and know-how to our students in the developed world and our partners in the developing world so they can start their journey together.

Laurens De PoorterConsultant - Boston Consulting Group (BCG)

    Founder Academics for Development

I admire the way AFD contributes to the international dimension of the KU Leuven and its mission of social service by providing students with opportunities for social and sustainable entrepreneurship.

Prof. dr. Rik TorfsRector - KU Leuven

Students should try to increase their personal development by means of student consulting or entrepreneurship. AFD offers wonderful opportunities in these areas, especially since AFD combines a practical experience with useful ways of develop-ment cooperation. Therefore I fully support AFD.
