South East Coast AmbulanceAFD is working with South East Coast Ambulance collecting case studies from Deaf and hard of hearing people when needing the ambulance service. Whether this has been a good or poor experience, we would like to hear from you. The case studies will be used when training ambulance staff, to raise awareness of issues that Deaf and hard of hearing have when needing the ambulance service. More information about

SECAmb can be found at www.secamb.nhs.uk or on the Action for Deafness website.

Please send any case studies to [email protected]

999 TextingThe emergency SMS service lets Deaf and hard of hearing people in the UK send an SMS text message to the UK 999 service where it will be passed to the police, ambulance, fi re rescue, or coastguard.

By sending an SMS message to 999 you can call for help and the emergency services will be able to reply to you.

You will need to register your mobile phone number at www.emergencysms.org.uk before using the emergency SMS service.

I am delighted to be writing from our splendid new Head Offi ce. After several years of searching and many months of refurbishment we relocated in March. We now have a remarkable facility for our service users, expertly designed with their specifi c needs in mind. Clients enter the premises through the large and bright Resource Centre which has a full range of assistive listening devices for demonstration and sale. There is a comfortable waiting area, a clinical room for re-tubing and supply of batteries and a demonstration room where staff can demonstrate how the assistive listening devices will perform in a domestic setting, giving clients the best possible opportunity to decide which works best for them.

The large audiology rooms have been fi tted with acoustic ceiling tiles and state-of-the-art acoustic booths and testing equipment. You can read more about the modern technology that we use on page 3.

We are fortunate to have a large conference room facility which we use for staff, volunteer and trustee meetings, Patient Participation Group meetings, lip reading and sign language classes and the Communication Tactics Training that we offer to all new hearing aid users. This room has sophisticated audio visual equipment and an inductive loop installed, making it an ideal location for meetings where communication support is essential. The conference room is available for hire so please contact us if you would like more details.

A word of welcome from the CEO

The premises will be offi cially opened in July by Professor Sue Hill OBE, Chief Scientifi c Offi cer NHS England. There will be a full report and photographs in the next newsletter.

Along with the newly refurbished base in Worthing and our three new audiology services in Crawley, East Grinstead and Handcross, this new Head Offi ce gives AFD the capacity to make things happen for Deaf and hard of hearing people more effectively than ever before. We have expanded our workforce to enhance customer service and you can see the new recruits on page 4.

There are photographs of the new premises throughout this edition but please come and see it for yourself. It is in a town centre location with disabled parking to the front and a large car park to the rear. I look forward to welcoming you here, soon.

Jane Shaw CEO

Q: What equipment is used to perform a hearing test?

A: Action for Deafness has invested in state of the art testing equipment to give the best possible hearing test results. Third generation AURICAL testing equipment sets new standards for objective fi tting and verifi cation. It is easier, faster and more intuitive than its predecessor thanks to new, dynamic features.

Q: What are the benefi ts of the new technology to the patient?

A: The built in sound library in the Intuitive Hearing Loss Simulator provides an opportunity to demonstrate from a wide range of music and sounds, as well as from speech in both quiet and noisy environments. It also allows simulation of the benefi ts of the hearing aids and the effect of further change in hearing thresholds.

The Hearing Instrument Simulator allows the audiologists to demonstrate the benefi ts of amplifi cation to a patient who has never worn hearing aids.

Q & A with our Chief Audiologist Liam Thompson

Live Speech Mapping ensures better fi tting by using live sound/speech and real ear measurements. It allows patients to understand clinical recommendations and to take an active part in the process.

Q: Where will the hearing test be performed?

A: Action for Deafness has modern audiology rooms which each have a sound treated booth installed. The British Standard EN ISO 9001 sound treated booths enable pure tone audiometry to be carried out to 0 decibels for air conduction and bone conduction. The comfortable patient seating position inside the booth ensures accurate repeatable testing.

Q: What type of hearing aids will I be fi tted with?

A: Action for Deafness use only the best NHS hearing aids. Multi channel digital hearing aids with noise reduction and directional microphones are fi tted to all patients. Specialist aids are made available if medically indicated.

Q: How much support will I be given once my hearing aid has been fi tted?

A: Action for Deafness understands that hearing aid users need time to adjust to wearing their new devices and often need continuing aftercare. All new hearing aid users are encouraged to attend a Communication Tactics Training session and to bring family members and friends along to learn more about living with a hearing loss. Patients can drop in to our Resource Centres or outreach clinics at any time for advice and support.

UKAS accreditation for AFDIn December 2012, AFD was proud to become the fi rst organisation in the Country to gain accreditation from the UK Accreditation Service against the IQIPS Standards.

Improving Quality in Physiological Diagnostic Services (IQIPS) is a programme hosted by the Accreditation Unit of the Royal College of Physicians (RCP) with support from the Department of Health. The IQIPS accreditation framework has been developed to improve, promote and recognise good quality practice across nine physiological diagnostic disciplines. Accreditation is awarded by the UK Accreditation Service (UKAS) under contract with the RCP.

AFD is now a qualifi ed provider of choice of adult rehabilitation hearing services for three of the new clinical commissioning groups – Crawley, Horsham & Mid Sussex and Coastal West Sussex.

CEO Jane Shaw was presented with the certifi cate of accreditation at the Royal College of Physicians in January by Lord Lindsay, Chair of UKAS.

Carol Templeman is an Action for Deafness volunteer. Here, she tells us why she started volunteering with Action for Deafness and what her role involves.

‘I was a teaching assistant at a primary school in Surrey and then a carer for my mother, aunt and friend who all had cancer. I am fairly new to this area and although I have made lots of friends through my bowling at Felbridge bowling club, I was looking for another interest and a way to meet more people.

It was a good day for me when I saw a small advert in my local paper for volunteers wanted at the Action for Deafness clinic in East Grinstead. I made a phone call for more details, completed the application form and,

Volunteering with Action for Deafness

following a meeting with Nicola Small, the Volunteer Service Co-ordinator, I was accepted as a volunteer. I agreed to be available for at least one day each month.

After initial training in the Haywards Heath Resource Centre I joined the other volunteers at the Outreach clinic in East Grinstead who were all very supportive. I enjoy meeting the people who come to the clinic for advice and information and to get their batteries and have their hearing aids re-tubed.

All the people working and volunteering for Action for Deafness are so very kind and caring and have made me feel so glad that I joined the team.’

Action for Deafness would like to thank all its hard working and committed volunteers and looks forward to another rewarding year providing services for Deaf and hard of hearing people.

Action for Deafness website re-launched www.actionfordeafness.org.uk

Talking Hands Community Deaf Club is a group of Deaf and hard of hearing people who meet regularly for talks and discussions. In April they were joined by Andrew Smith, First Aid Offi cer at Littlehampton swimming pool. The talk has encouraged some members of the group to go on and get a fi rst aid certifi cate.

In May the group were joined by Nick Gibb MP for Bognor Regis and Littlehampton, who updated the group on plans for improving support for the Deaf and hard of hearing community.

Action for Deafness was delighted to hear of the safe arrival of audiologist Sophie Brinkworth’s baby in April. Sophie would like to thank all the patients and volunteers who sent their good wishes.
