6 months: 3 x $2,725 | 12 months: 6 x $2,500This package offers you the opportunity to achieve maximum exposure while establishing your organization as a major presence in the industry. When asked what the most popular language is besides Eng-lish in the United States, most people will answer right away: Spanish. After all, in many urban (and even rural) places you go, you will find Spanish-language versions of menus, signs, instruc-tions and ingredients right below the English version. Likewise, who of us in the US hasn’t called into any customer service num-ber and heard the option, “For English, Press One. Para Espa-ñol, Marque Número Dos”?

For all intents and purposes, Spanish has become the United States’ secondary “official” lan-guage (even though the US techni-cally doesn’t have a first “official” language), and for good reason. According to the US Census Bureau population projections, the Hispanic population has grown ten times faster than the general population since 1970, making up more than half of the US popula-tion growth between 2000 and 2010 alone. According to Pew Research Center, by 2050, the population projection is expected to be around 112 million individuals, with the minority population tipping over into the majority status by 2044.

So what does that all mean for businesses and marketers? Plenty. Currently, there are well over 200 million Spanish-speaking users online worldwide, with over 20 mil-lion of them in the United States alone. By the end of 2015, their pur-chasing power is expected to reach $1.5 trillion dollars. It stands to reason that marketing to this group would be in the best interest for any company, and that is indeed what many businesses are now coming to terms with.

Even now, there is relatively little content online for native Hispanic speakers, considering the sheer number of users. It is estimated that only approximately 4.6% of top websites on the internet are in Spanish (Figure 1). While many

Spanish speakers in the United States may also speak English, the fact remains that most internet users would rather engage and purchase from websites that are in their native language over those in English. In fact, it has been found that the majority of people will even pay more for a product with infor-mation in their native language. In Common Sense Advisory’s report, “Can’t Read, Won’t Buy – Why Language Matters on Global Web-sites,” Don DePalma addresses the significance of the findings to global businesses: "Many firms still debate whether it makes business sense for them to globalize their online mar-keting, online commerce sites, and call centers. There is a longstanding assumption that enough people on the web feel comfortable using English, especially when buying high-tech or expensive products. Nonetheless, research dating back to 1998 indicates a high propen-sity for people to buy in their own language."

With this evidence in mind, it should be clear that Hispanics are eager for content that speaks to them in a relevant way and mar-keters are now beginning to focus on that challenge more than ever. Traditionally, the biggest target consumer market has always been the 18 to 24-year-olds, which now go by the more creative moniker Millennial. This Millennial genera-tion is even more sought after now since it is the largest generation by population size, and with 21% of US Millennials identifying as Hispanic, this group should be a major focus point of any informed marketer.

However, marketing to Hispanics is not just about translating content or text from English into Spanish. There is much more involved if the marketing is going to be successful. Marie Quintana, senior vice presi-dent of multicultural sales at Pep-siCo, has noted that currently, it's no longer about marketing to Hispanics or non-Hispanics. It's about reaching shoppers, and many of them happen to be Hispanic, which requires a cer-tain sort of tailoring. This “tailoring”

According to Pew Research Center, 38% of US adult Hispanics speak Spanish and the other 62% are bilingual. A 2012 Nielsen study revealed that if US Hispanics were a standalone country, their market buying power would be one of the top twenty economies in the world.

The US Census Bureau defines Hispanic or Latino as “a person of Cuban, Mexican, Puerto Rican, South or Central American (except for Brazil), or other Spanish culture or origin regardless of race.” The Census Bureau states that Hispanics or Latinos can be of any race, any ancestry and any ethnicity. A popular misconception is that most Hispanics are from Mexico. In fact, according to the 2014 census, about one-third of Hispanics in the United States hail from Central America or other Spanish-speaking countries.

While most of the Hispanic population is in Texas, California and Florida, the Glenn Llopis Group identified growth when it specifically targeted 16 to 24-year-old consumers with average to high levels of acculturation, rather than the previous target of the mass Hispanic market.

Dual-language materials will help get your message to this powerful demographic. By offering dual language options, you're off to a great start. But it is also a matter of preference: let users choose which language they prefer. By giving your audience a choice of which language to consume, you’re setting your company and your less proficient English speakers up for success.

US Hispanics are ahead of the curve when it comes to digital. They lead in adoption of new devices. They are power users of mobile and video consumption. The average Hispanic spends more than eight hours watching online video each month — over 90 minutes longer than the US average, according to a 2014 Nielson report. And increasingly, online means mobile.

A Nielson Report states that ten million Hispanics watch mobile video for an average of more than six hours per month. Among smartphone owners, Hispanics are

the most relevant legal acts into a spreadsheet, although they never end up being perfectly aligned, can then turn out to be the more feasible alternative. But then in other confer-ence settings, well-aligned TMs can be a wonderful reference and should be considered in all these cases where conference texts are translated by translators using TM beforehand.

Alignment and term extractionOne of the most time-consuming

tasks when preparing for an interpre-tation job is reading reference mate-rial, presentations and manuscripts in order to take in both content and terminology. This task might become easier by aligning bilingual documents in order to make it easier to keep track of which English segment corresponds to which German one, or even extract terminology automatically. Even with-out a perfect bilingual terminology extraction, having a list of term can-didates might help the interpreter to concentrate on the meaning of a text while reading it and then dealing with the terminology separately. When you receive some last-minute docu-ment in the booth and have no time to even scan it, even an automatically extracted term list might help.

All three programs include align-ment modules for the usual text formats, though PDF is always a prob-lem. The alignment results are more or less satisfactory; in my testing they always required considerable manual re-editing. This is a crucial point, as alignment is only interesting as long as it is more useful than just the two texts copied into two spreadsheet col-umns, where I can read in parallel and do full text searching as well.

When it comes to terminology extraction, Across has a monolingual extraction function, which can only be used from within an active translation project and only via the predefined workflow terminology and translation. The server version (which, as opposed to the Personal Edition, is not free of charge) also includes a bilingual extrac-tion, which I have not tested.

memoQ also does monolingual extraction and this function can be used by simply selecting it from the menu. In Trados, extraction is offered as an additional tool (extra charge),

The quality of the extraction result depends a lot on the characteristics of the text, so it is hard to say in general if it is more efficient to quickly read over a docu-ment and write down the relevant terms manually or use an automatic translation. Apart from the technicalities, it surely also depends on the preferences and working methods of each interpreter. But it is defi-nitely worth a closer look.

TM and terminology management programs do indeed offer some interesting aids for interpreters. More often than not, what makes these programs less suitable for interpreters are just minor aspects of handling the data. Hence, it might be worthwhile for TM vendors to consider integrating some more interpreter-friendly features, like a really booth-friendly search function and comfortable glossary print-ing, to address a whole new group of potential users. On the other hand, if one takes a closer look at those programs with

all they have to offer, it also becomes clear that there are already some very handy features that interpreters might also want to use and that the fact that they are so little used by interpreters might to a certain degree have to do with a lack of familiarity. If ever one wanted to further explore this path to the interpreter's booth, it might as well turn out to be beneficial to translators and interpreters alike. Translators probably wouldn't mind using booth-friendly, more intuitive functions either.

The whole subject of speech recogni-tion and checking the spoken word against pretranslated text or terminology might be a future asset, and possibly not only on the interpretation side. With the spoken word spreading into all areas of our lives, video tutorials here and podcasts there, translating or subtitling spoken messages will become more and more important to translators as well. Thus, although desks and booths sometimes seem like different planets, we are not such distant relatives after all. M

the most relevant legal acts into a spreadsheet, although they never end up being perfectly aligned, can then turn out to be the more feasible alternative.

In Trados, extraction is offered as an additional tool (extra charge),

which then includes monolingual and bilingual extraction.

If you see term extraction for the first time, the result is impressive. You enter a text and the machine gives you a list of terms. However, these lists or glossaries require some re-editing, correcting erroneous assignations and deleting irrelevant terms. The quality of the extraction result depends a lot on the characteristics of the text, so it is hard to say in general if it is more efficient to quickly read over a docu-ment and write down the relevant terms manually or use an automatic translation. Apart from the technicali-ties, it surely also depends on the pref-erences and working methods of each interpreter. But it is definitely worth a closer look.

TM and terminology manage-ment programs do indeed offer some interesting aids for interpreters. More often than not, what makes these pro-grams less suitable for interpreters are just minor aspects of handling the data. Hence, it might be worthwhile for TM vendors to consider integrating some more interpreter-friendly features, like a really booth-friendly search function and comfortable glossary printing, to address a whole new group of potential users. On the other hand, if one takes a closer look at those programs with all

they have to offer, it also becomes clear that there are already some very handy features that interpreters might also want to use and that the fact that they are so little used by interpreters might to a certain degree have to do with a lack of familiarity. If ever one wanted to further explore this path to the inter-preter's booth, it might as well turn out to be beneficial to translators and interpreters alike.
